Might be a long shot as it's tucked away on Sky Arts but it's really interesting and relaxing to watch.

I just find this series so relaxing 😌

Floralnomad · 12/03/2017 22:51

We didn't think the American woman should have gone through , it should have been the lady who had the painting picked by the sitter . I thought the American was actually the fifth best with the Canadian chap and the chap who draws on stuff from skips being worse ( they were really dire) . Very pleased that they realised they'd made a huge mistake getting rid of Liam and bought him back ,he's really talented .

fluentinsarcasm · 13/03/2017 00:19

Love it, highlight of my viewing week. Love any painting show, still mourning the demise of Watercolour Challenge!

fairycakecentral · 13/03/2017 06:41

We watch this and Landscape artist. The rule of thumb is if you think a painting was good to go through, it generally doesn't. I was so happy when Liam was brought back but so should many others (the artist who also painted Dave Myers with all that colour was suberb).

landscpe really annoyed me last year. Richard who won, when they did a behind the scenes type thing for the final, is a very talented artist, he had amazing work sitting in his studio. however his heat effort was dire. All green and brown nonsense that a child could do. His next effort wasn't much better. But from when Richardcwon his heat, we knew he would be the ultimate winner. kind of like how we knew Daniella would with the great interior design challenge even though her work was crap.

kwick · 13/03/2017 06:58

Oh yes fairycake I really did not rate Danielle either!!!

Floralnomad · 13/03/2017 13:04

I really disliked the last winner of landscape artist , didn't rate his stuff at all , then again the winner of the first series was not very good either , when she did the painting for the Constable house ( the winners commission) it was embarrassing viewing as the people were trying to find enthusiasm for it when it was pretty dire and didn't look anything like what she was actually supposed to paint .

DalekBred · 13/03/2017 15:52

aGREE about the design interior prog too. she was crap.

If American woman wins PAOTY Ill disown Sky Arts!!!

ONe of the 2 guys should have it, but Ive just fallen on my sword there!

TipTop333 · 14/03/2017 20:56

And we have a winner!

(Not my personal choice.)

Floralnomad · 14/03/2017 21:09

I think Liam's commission lost it for him , she did look a bit odd , we were relatively happy as long as the woman didn't win .

MrsEvedder · 14/03/2017 22:30

Have just found this thread, I've loved this series. Gareth's commission of the judge was amazing, I think it's what won it for him. Also think that Liam lost it on his commission too, it was not good in my opinion. Perhaps his lack of experience showing through? And also loved Gareth's portrait of graham norton.

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2017 22:35

I've yet to watch the painting of Graham Norton, can't wait to see the final portrait. From the hint we got it at the end it looks quite different from the artist's usual style. I'll watch it tomorrow evening.

I think the right artist won this series. The portrait of the judge was stunning, that strong pose - wow!

TipTop333 · 14/03/2017 22:51

I watched the follow up and the portrait of Graham Norton was stunning. It showed his other portrait work too and it was brilliant.

My issue though is that he didn't use the same medium that he used in the challenges in the final commission of GN. Call me cynical but it made me think that either the judges look at a lot more than the work just submitted for the series, or that he played a game and only used pencil/charcoal for the series because he knew it was different so gave him a USP but isn't actually his preferred style.

I'm definitely overthinking it.

Floralnomad · 14/03/2017 23:01

Had he used paint throughout and the results been even close to the Graham Norton painting and he'd have still won , the final commission was stunning . Im just pleased that stupid judging hasn't marred this show like it does on Landscape Artist

DalekBred · 15/03/2017 15:56

I thought the same tiptop. although his graham Norton was fantastic.

weird hes related too!

Just soooooo glad the woman didn't win, although her 1st painting in the final was the best shes done.

Feel for Liam though, hope he goes on to great things.

I don't get how one differentiates professional from amateur,.
But agree, the portrait of the judge was stunning, they should hang that in parliament.

kwick · 15/03/2017 18:41

What a shame that Liam buggered up his commission... I really like his style. Very sad series is at an end - love this show, which I only just discovered and binge watched all the past series Sad

Watching Graham Norton episode now.

Floralnomad · 15/03/2017 22:08

kwik , if you've enjoyed this it may be worth looking to see if the 3 other programmes that they made with Christian Hook are on catch up , he painted Sue Johnson , Mick Hucknall and Fabrice Muamba and they were a good watch if you like Christians art .

kwick · 16/03/2017 11:27

Thanks Flora :)

3luckystars · 16/03/2017 11:31

The picture of the judge was absolutely fantastic. I have never seen anything like it before, it was brilliant. He deserved to win and am really looking forward to Graham Norton.

3luckystars · 17/03/2017 07:55

I watched it and the graham norton episode. Where were the judges?

Beautiful painting, I am going to go to see it!

Floralnomad · 17/03/2017 12:05

We wondered why the judges , or at least one of them didn't show up -very odd, although straight after the show was aired the younger woman was online saying how good the painting was .

DramaAlpaca · 17/03/2017 15:29

I was wondering that too. Maybe the Sky Arts budget didn't stretch to three flights to Dublin Grin

I thought the final portrait of Graham Norton was stunning, so good.

3luckystars · 17/03/2017 15:40

Yes it is absolutely gorgeous.

There is definitely something going on, because even if one judge was missing previously, they would say 'Catherine had a previous engagement ' but nothing was mentioned at all!!

Also, the 3 judges always seem to be so excited at the unveiling, nearly jumping to get the first look at it first, they love art so you would think they would be mad to see it! Something must have happened.

Frank skinner said 'they never found it so hard to choose a winner' so maybe there was a disagreement over the winner? I don't know! I thought mumsnet would know!!!

kwick · 17/03/2017 18:49

Ooo I did not even notice about the judges missing... hopefully someone has the lo-down!!!

BakeOffBiscuits · 17/03/2017 21:10

Oh I loved this programme and thought the best man won. His self protrait stood out right from the start. he was also rather good lookingWink

I wondered if he did only pencil drawings during the programmes as he could do them quickly? I also absolutely loved the pictures he had done of his partner and children. Such stunning, beautiful paintings.

BakeOffBiscuits · 17/03/2017 21:12

And wasn't it funny that Gareth amd Graham were related? I thought there was even a family resemblenceGrin
