Is anyone else watching?

I ADORED this when it was first shown.

I am really disappointed with the last few Christmas specials. Is it just me or this one just as bad as the others?

I'm watching. Who is the man trying to attack Jonathan?

Merlincat07 · 28/12/2016 21:53

Haven't the foggiest. And I've seen ALL previous episodes. I'm assuming he's connected with the Monkey Case Warwick Davies referenced but he doesn't look very familiar.

It's his wife. They don't seem to have any chemistry or anything in common and she doesn't even seem to like him at all. Why would they get married?

SumAndSubstance · 28/12/2016 21:55

Obviously, I didn't mean his wife is the man trying to kill him...

I don't know! He was brilliant when he was with Caroline Quentin. It hasn't been the same since she left.

Sumandsubstance - I did have to re-read your post a couple of times to get what you meant!

SumAndSubstance · 28/12/2016 21:57

Haha, sorry. But yes, Caroline Quentin was great!

Merlincat07 · 28/12/2016 22:01

I think you're right, though. It's the lack of chemistry that makes him seem like a pompous, know-it-all arse and the situations so silly.

OP posts:
Merlincat07 · 28/12/2016 22:02

I mean, the situations/plots were always very silly but Caroline Quentin (and even Julia Sawala) made it so much more entertaining.

I'm watching, and the number of posts I've made on here since it started are an indication of how unenthralled I am ...

A shame, as I was a real fan of the episodes before 'Jonathan' got married.

SumAndSubstance · 28/12/2016 22:07

Yes, it was always quite character-driven and the fact that you liked the characters and their relationships made the silly plots enjoyable. Now all the characters seem miserable and cranky, all that's left is the silly plot!

Cosmicglitterpug · 28/12/2016 22:10

That burning bit was a bit much

Merlincat07 · 28/12/2016 22:13

So, he sets the mysterious man on fire (self-defence - don't think the police would see it that way) and then closes the hatch on him so he can burn alive??

TrustySnail · 28/12/2016 22:13

That 'lottery' episode was the pits for me (where the winning lottery numbers were 'miraculously' discovered under some stripped wallpaper).

I should at this point say 'SPOILER ALERT' although it scarcely seems worth it.

Anyway, it was obvious that the numbers must be significant in themselves, and the premise for their having been painted on the wall was utterly ludicrous.

DMCWelshCakes · 28/12/2016 22:32

I'm feeling smug because I worked out 2 of the plot points ahead of the reveal. I never used to be able to do that.

themorus · 28/12/2016 22:37

I'm confused... he basically just murdered someone, whose presence wasn't explained...?

How did the CCTV man know the other guy murdered his wife's sister?

Was his wife the lady doing a scarecrow? Why wasn't she more bothered about him going?

Merlincat07 · 28/12/2016 22:38

Trustysnail: I have absolutely no recollection of the lottery episode you mention (previous Christmas special?) so that must show how much interest I've lost in it.

Welshcakes: I've got to the end I don't really have a clue what the point was, let alone attempted to solve the mystery.

And the bloke Jonathan killed? Any thoughts?

OP posts:
Merlincat07 · 28/12/2016 22:42

Themorus: yes, the CCTV guy was the OH of the woman doing the scarecrow. But now I'm confused because the first wife of the Scottish guy was the CCTV guy's wife's sister? Or did I mis-hear that?

OP posts:
themorus · 28/12/2016 22:47

Thats what I thought, did they all just carry on with that lady, pretending they didn't know her husband just murdered someone and left the country?!

And whats with the flashbacks to his brother? Is he dead? That bit was very sad.

susannahmoodie · 28/12/2016 22:47

No it wasn't his wife- scarecrow woman's husband was the ginger taxi driver at the start- playing on audiences assumption that the two black characters are married to each other?

NickAngel · 28/12/2016 22:52

But why didn't the murdering husband recognise his brother in law?

themorus · 28/12/2016 22:53

The woman making the scarecrow at the beginning said her husband was working at the house and said there was all sorts going on, I didn't notice a taxi driver at all.

themorus · 28/12/2016 22:58

Good point nickangel he would've recognised him surely? I'm either being really thick today or there is loads of unanswered questions.

Damia · 28/12/2016 23:08

The taxi driver dropped the couple off right at the start and refused to go near the house

I guess as the first wife was foreign there was an assumption he never met his bil
