I really thought they'd be a thread on this! Here goes- I thought it was good, and am sorry that they're only one more. SO many interesting issues.

I enjoyed it, too. Lots of interesting issues, as you say. I thought one guy was too dominant, though.

Interesting indeed. But hard for it to be in any way representative, as clearly the women whose menfolk would have prohibited them from taking part were not there.

Yes, I was thinking that. I would like to have heard from women who're not allowed to show their faces in public.

Why would they be 'not allowed' to show there face? It's there own choice what where etc not a case of 'not allowed'

There are a couple of relatively conservative Muslim women in the group, wearing headscarves rather than high heels and wonder bras, but they didn't get much screen time.

In a way, Icloud. I'm not convinced there's a lot of choice involved if the alternative means losing your family.

From the points you have raised, show you mustn't be that experienced.
1- Not allowed to show there faces
2- losing family members by not complying.

I watched this programme.

It was quite an eye opener to see the differences in degrees of beliefs/rules of Islam.

I've set tomorrow's episode to record.

But what was good for me was that he was shown as not just a fanatic (which a poorer programme would have done) but with more nuance

That one guy was horrific - really shocking.

Sexist, homophobic, 'fine' with violence....he actually appeared quite deluded and disturbed.

The majority of women in the UK who cover their faces do so through their own choice. I know a lady who started wearing a niqab in secret as she was worried what her husband would say. One day he spotted her in the car with it and the conversation ended with him stating that she wasn't to come to him for help when the racist abuse started. I bet when they walk down the road ppl assume he requested her to wear when in reality she wears it in despite him!

Fairly conservative women? Where in the program? Didn't see anyone wearing that long gown for example. Even the headscarves where in different styles that I wouldn't call conservative. The guy talking about going to Syria etc... well at best is missing people skills . I think those kind of programs(as the benefit ones) are edited to cast a bad light on certain groups of people.

I was pleased how the older woman challenged the radical and suggested he helped with the clearing up rather than continuing to talk at the others constantly.

Watching it now the dominant guy is a convert isnt he? Not unusual, my DF is a actually a convert and i suffered many lectures, converts ino do far more harm than born and breds. i agree regarding more traditional women on there.

I watched this programme with interest with my older teenage kids. We have lived and worked in the London area most of our lives and have always been part of a widely cosmopolitan society through work school and social lives. I think the thing that struck me most about this show was that it was trying to show so much in such a small space of time. The range of diversity encompassed by British Muslims is vast - maybe this show did manage to portray this through the variety of participants. If anything I hope that if any real message is gained from this show it is that tolerance and acceptance, compassion and kindness are the universal human qualities that can be shared by people of any faith or none. I dont know his name but can only feel humbled by the attempt of one chap to communicate positively with a member of the EDL ... only to get kicked back by a couple of the other male members of the group. More talking, more education is the way forward not drawing up battle lines of them and us.

I rather the programme didn't have the extremist guy in it though I think this is something that needs to be explored and understood more but for a different programme

Other views were interesting and though they are joined together by sharing the same religion they all have differently beliefs through cultural differences, their education, they political views and so on

I just felt throwing the extreme guy in the mix was totally unnecessary and done to create controversy

I watched it by accident really in that I couldn't be bothered to change channel and found it fascinating.

I liked the extremist guy being there, it meant they had the full range of beliefs. He looked very uncomfortable with the "free mixing". That's not to say I agree with his beliefs mind you!
