Jonathan Ross v Graham Norton

Is this a new thing where JR copies Norton and has all the guests sitting on the sofa at the same time? He's got David Walliams, Kylie, Miranda Hart, Paul Hollywood and Keira Knightley all sitting there looking a bit awkward. There's none of the flow of the Graham Norton show.

I saw a bit and then caved and let the DSs watch MOTD. That's how little I cared. Graham Norton just has a certain something that very few chat show hosts do - and I can't even define what it is. He's so instinctively likeable that people relax with him. I don't dislike Jonathan Ross at all but he just doesn't have that thing Graham Norton has.

SausageSoda · 10/12/2016 22:38

JR show has been shite for a while now. Boring, jaded and not funny. I used to enjoy it years ago but it's just tiresome now.

squoosh · 10/12/2016 22:39

Miranda Hart's dog is mega cute. Definitely the most charismatic being on that sofa.

I don't like GN. Don't know why.

SimonLeBonOnAndOn · 10/12/2016 22:40

I prefer GN.
The JR show is dated and not funny anymore

squoosh · 10/12/2016 22:41

'He's so instinctively likeable that people relax with him.'

Yeah that's how I feel. There's something so forced about Ross. His laughter sounds canned. And he's so sycophantic that he makes my rectum shudder.

AhNowTed · 10/12/2016 22:43

No contest. JR is just a sycophant and 'loves your work'!Even his own guest is slagging off the show

NicknameUsed · 10/12/2016 22:45

"Graham Norton just has a certain something that very few chat show hosts do"

He allows the guests to talk and doesn't make the show all about him, unlike Jonathon Ross who is past his sell by date.

littlefirtree · 10/12/2016 22:50

GN definitely. I never like a programme that has moved channels - it is always the death knell. And also I can't help thinking of JR's brother Paul whenever I watch the show now and think what an excruciating embarrassing bastard he must be for the rest of his family!

UsernamesAreAPainInTheBalls · 10/12/2016 22:51

JR makes me feel awkward the whole time - you know that feeling when your earwiggin on people who don't know one another very well and the convo flow is a bit strained
Love graham he's very funny and genuine and seems to put the guests at ease
I'd actually just watch I'm all day I don't care who's on 🙈

UsernamesAreAPainInTheBalls · 10/12/2016 22:52

*watch him 🙄

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 10/12/2016 22:55

When watching JR, I am very conscious of the fact it's a chat show on ITV.

With GN, I think he and the guests could be sitting in any old pub, and would still be having much the same conversations. Still can't stand the red chair part though!

NoelHeadbands · 10/12/2016 22:59

I did used to like JR once upon a time, when he had his Five Poofs and a Piano, I find him cringe on ITV though, all false laugh and fawning

I love the whole premise of the Graham Norton show, as do most of the guests it would seem, but I do wonder if the Beeb do just make better chat shows- I'm thinking Norton vs Ross, Parky vs Aspel...

squoosh · 10/12/2016 23:01

I'd forgotten all about Five Poofs and a Piano!

OP posts:
AhNowTed · 10/12/2016 23:01

This show is cringe

NoelHeadbands · 10/12/2016 23:03

Actually, was it Four Poofs? I think I gave him an extra Poof there...

SailingThroughTime · 10/12/2016 23:04

GN is a much better chat show host. Love him. He's very good at what he does and he makes it look easy.

tiffanysfanny · 10/12/2016 23:05

The problem with jr is that he tries to assert his dominance with his demeanour, ( body language, the way he speaks, the position of his seat, the way he comes a cross). He portrays himself like he is on the same level as the celebrities and that is off putting and threatening to the person he is interviewing. The biggest thing is, it's very restricted to the script.

Gn admires the people who come on his shows. He looks up to them and the sofa with other people takes away the feeling of being sacred for the celebrities. There is always someone to bounce off if you feel you can't say anything. You also don't have to keep to the script. They sometimes just go off and it's amazing with a group that clicked.

PippaFawcett · 10/12/2016 23:05

And what is with all the bloody product placements? I don't want to watch them playing Pie Face, I want them to be interviewed!

NoahVale · 10/12/2016 23:07

There is alcohol involved in GN's show too Wink

havent watched JR for ages. Went off him a while ago.

AhNowTed · 10/12/2016 23:08

Now kylie plugging a cheesy xmas song

PippaFawcett · 10/12/2016 23:09

I stopped watching JR years ago too because he makes the show all about him and not about the guests. But it happens to be on now, how dated is Kylie's performance?!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 10/12/2016 23:10

JR was added to my shit list years ago after he told Gwyneth Paltrow how fuckable she looked in an interview, although that might have used different words to say it. It was an abuse of the power relationship and rules of discourse in an interview (i.e. celeb has to gamely submit). In real life she could have thrown a drink over him or slapped him and told him to fuck off. I was already furious for her & then he blundered on to a really insensitive question about her recently dead Dad later in the same interview. How she managed not to cry, I don't know. He's a fuckwit of the highest order. Like I said, dead to me & has been for years.

tiffanysfanny · 10/12/2016 23:10

When gn started I remember trying to catch it on a Wednesday night because jr had the Friday night slot. I was at school and could never stay up to watch it. I put up with jr until gn took over. I only watch jr if there is someone am really desperate to watch. I only watch that segment too.

Am surprised he has changed his format. He must be struggling. Grin

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 10/12/2016 23:14

Interesting. Just seen Tiffany's comments about JR's body language and domineering behaviour. Triangulates with what I just said about his Gwynnie interview. I really, really don't like him.
