Jonathan Ross v Graham Norton

Is this a new thing where JR copies Norton and has all the guests sitting on the sofa at the same time? He's got David Walliams, Kylie, Miranda Hart, Paul Hollywood and Keira Knightley all sitting there looking a bit awkward. There's none of the flow of the Graham Norton show.

In jr green room there is lots of alcohol. The little waiting room, the table is usually full of alcohol.

CotswoldStrife · 10/12/2016 23:15

I haven't watched JR for years either, it is all about him. GN lets his guests speak.

user1475253854 · 10/12/2016 23:15

I used to like JR on BBC but caught his itv show the other day and it was rubbish.

GN is so good at what he does. I remember reading that Olivia Colman doesn't feel she is good/natural on those kind of things but says he always makes you feel relaxed. And there's wine.
And often it's nice when other guests try and make others feel relaxed/welcome/funny too.

Twogoats · 10/12/2016 23:17

JR and his brother give me the creeps

squoosh · 10/12/2016 23:18

Didn't his brother get addicted to illegal highs and get caught dogging with another man? I remember a rather eye catching headline!

Illegitimate Exactly what you said, can't stand JR but I adore GN. He makes it seem so effortless, witty and fun He is great and I love his little asides and interaction with the audience.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 10/12/2016 23:24

I like the way the guests spark off each other on GN, especially when they are starstruck by other guests on the sofa with them.

The Miriam Margolyes/Will.I.Am episode is worth finding on YouTube - it is completely and utterly bonkers and hilarious. I have seen MM on GN since & she is almost willfully eccentric, but she met her match in Will.I.Am & a weird interpersonal alchemy happened.

There was also a surprisingly good Bill Murray episode where he talked about taking a day off from filming somewhere in Europe (poss UK) & going to Prague (absolutely miles away) for the day. I can't remember who was on with him but it was very funny.

BagelGoesWalking · 10/12/2016 23:52

Bill Murray, Matt Damon and Hugh Bonneville were on together to promote The Monuments Men. My absolute favourite GN show. They all drank a bit too much Grin and Matt Damon said it was the most fun he'd ever had on a chat show.

Miriam M is a character, for sure, but I get a bit tired of her fanny-related jokes, she seems to do it on any show she's on for the shock value.

squoosh · 10/12/2016 23:56

That was the best show! Drinking from Paloma Faith's shoe Grin

BBC - bladders of steel. HB coming back on pretending to talk to his agent on the phone about the red suits 'they're all wearing them, it's embarrassing' Grin That was a great show, Bagel is right. Chat show gold!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 11/12/2016 07:41

Thanks Bagel & Squoosh - that was exactly the one I had in mind & Matt Damon was indeed having a ball. At one point Hugh Boneville got up & wandered off set without explanation, presumably for a wee. It was car crash funny with a group of amiable drunks messing around.

FourToTheFloor · 11/12/2016 07:47

I can't stand JR. Graham is just so funny and natural and keeps the conversations going nicely.

WalrusGumboot · 11/12/2016 07:56

Can't stand JR. I remember years ago, he tried to simulate sex with Kylie on his show. In that moment I completely changed how I felt about him. He makes me feel sick just to look at him now. I was disappointed to hear him on R2 again the other day after what happened with poor Andrew Sachs.

GN is a darling.

123MothergotafleA · 11/12/2016 08:00

Never cared for Jr.myself, and his stunt with that other eejit when they abused poor Andrew Sachs RIP, has left an indelible mark on my brain.
GNs show is just natural bonkers hilarity. GN is as sharp as a tack, whereas J R just seems thick. Maybe that's the difference...

GirlOverboard · 11/12/2016 18:27

I'm annoyed that JR has copied GN by putting all the celebrities on the sofa together. I want them to be interviewed separately so I can watch the ones I'm interested in (Paul Hollywood) and switch over for the annoying ones (David Walliams) and the boring ones (Keira Knightley). I'm not watching an hour long show just to see the odd snippet from the celebrity I'm interested in. Exactly the same reason why I stopped watching Room 101 when they changed the format from a 1-to-1 interview to a three guest panel show.

I also hate how JR has copied Alan Carr by introducing silly games to the show. Why get Britney Spears on your show and spend half the time playing a stupid game of ping-pong FFS?

TheHiphopopotamus · 11/12/2016 19:25

Apparently, this show was filmed as a Boxing Day special but ITV brought it forward instead, so I don't know if that's why they've changed the format.

I love GN but I like JR too. But since the move to ITV, he seems to have lost something. Sometimes when some of the guests are on, it's like he hasn't done any research about them at all and it does come across as thought he can't be arsed.

GrimDamnFanjo · 12/12/2016 01:51

I've always enjoyed GN, sometimes you can see the us guests are completely baffled by the format. It always seems more relaxed and less forced.

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 12/12/2016 02:18

I used to love the GN show but I've really gone off it the last year or so. Can't put my finger on what's changed but it seems a bit forced or something now? and Jennifer Lawrence seems to be on eve other episode.

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 12/12/2016 02:20

And I don't like when they have all the people from same film on - they should have a mix and they need a comedian.

Oblomov16 · 12/12/2016 03:46

Used to like the 5 poofs and a piano.
GN is very 'easy', very easy to watch.
My only criticism is that it feels like each guest only gets 10 seconds. It's not in depth.
not suggesting it should be like piers Morgan when you interview someone intensely for 30 minutes, but, It feels like each guest gets to say one amazingly funny sentence and that's it. Interview over. Why would Chris hemsworth or other celebrities fly round the world for a one sentence interview?

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/12/2016 04:32

Graham is kind.

Jonathan is a bit of a bitch.

SallyGinnamon · 12/12/2016 05:38

I like the format of the GN show but I just can't bear him!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 12/12/2016 06:55

Why would Chris hemsworth or other celebrities fly round the world for a one sentence interview?

They'll be doing a press tour to promote their new film anyway and will be doing dozens, if not hundreds, of interviews in dozens of countries over a relatively short period. I suspect GN does well for guests because its a bit of light relief after dozens of looky-likey press junket interviews where the actor gets asked the same questions again & again. GN's format places less focus on individual celebs & means the conversation can take a surprising turn. I also think they often seem a lot more relaxed when they are interviewed with other cast members, which helps the conversation flow.

JustGettingStarted · 12/12/2016 07:19

I love Graham Norton. He just seems so genuinely delighted with the guests and the audience. It's obvious that everyone is having fun.

I have only watched JR once. He was interviewing Daniel Craig and I saw what illegitimateMortificadospawn was talking about: he took Craig's watch for charity. I guess it was a thing he was doing, taking guest's watches and raising money for charity. Daniel Craig looked unhappy about this, but what could he say? (It was obvious that he didn't expect it to happen and so couldn't wear a donation watch or no watch.)

Dulra · 12/12/2016 09:42

Definitely GN for me. I used to love the JR show on the bbc but he has never been able to recreate that on itv. His ego is too big and he makes everything about him and not the guests he is also rude and obnoxious. Gn is the complete opposite he rarely speaks about himself in fact he is a very private person. As others have said he has a way about him that puts people at ease, celebs always say how much they enjoy doing the GN show especially the Americans. Gn was interviewed recently on an Irish talk show the late late show. He was promoting his new book (which is great) and he was so nervous and humble he said he is not used to be interviewed and finds it really tough. It's amazing how someone who is on tv every week and radio daily can lack the confidence to talk about themselves. Made me love him even more lol
