Gavin & Stacey

Just binge watched Gavin & Stacey on Netflix.

It was a great series, wasn't it? Nessa and Smithy were the best characters, obviously. Not surprising given that Cordon and Jones wrote the series.

Some things I liked about the show:

The friendship between Gavin and Smithy - all the in-jokes / silly made-up words / dancing / random dance moves.

How most of the characters are actually very nice and generally care about one another. The Christmas episode (despite the drunk argument and punch) rang very true for me. They clearly love Christmas.

Nessa's wedding dress.

How Nessa and Smithy's baby is always called "Neil the baby". Even in the credits.

Anyone else love this show?

Inappropriate song lyrics are a recurring theme, aren't they?

Love the massively cheerful singing of "Do they know it's Christmas?" at the beginning of the Christmas special.

There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
Is the bitter sting of tears

Cracks me up.

A documentry! I also love Barry Island, Penrith etc. I loved my time in Wales, Cardiff is a great city. The Welsh are so lucky.

One thing that winds me up, when boring Stacey finally becomes pregnant she must have spent about 500 pounds on pregnancy sticks! She only worked in the arcade on minimum wage! Lol.
Pams mate 'Japanese Sue' makes me laugh, she isnt from Japan.. It was a great comedy.

TheresAlwaysTimeForTea · 19/10/2016 19:59

'My niece went to Greece and all I got was this lousy t-shirt' followed by everyone being weirded out for 5 mins. How'd the t-shirt go down Bryn? Mixed reviews Ness.

Loved that.

MrsJayy · 19/10/2016 20:02

Its big fat sue and Japanese Margaret ☺

The80sweregreat · 19/10/2016 20:03

Oh dear, sorry! 😱Not watched it in years .. ( no excuse i know)

raspberrysuicide · 19/10/2016 20:04

Julia Davis (Dawn) was in a fantastic black comedy sit com called Nighty Night. Ruth Jones is in it too and is also brilliant.

BikeRunSki · 19/10/2016 20:08

I loved it. I discovered it quite late on and became slightly obsessed with getting the dvds (before net flicks and Prime were around). Ended up in s big Asda in the weird time between Christmas and New Year, about 11pm, so I could watch them when I was up with DS, who was only a few months old at the time.

BikeRunSki · 19/10/2016 20:09

You'd like "Stella" too OP. Also written by and staring Ruth Jones. Think it's on Prime. It was a Sky series.

The80sweregreat · 19/10/2016 20:10

Bike, yes, the bit between christmas and new years is weird isnt it?
Bad planning there!

Absolutely RitchyBestingFace! Sheridan Smith is fantastic. Loved the argument with her "friend" when she and Gav are looking for Smithy.

That's what I love about this programme. Most sitcoms have some central characters and then a whole bunch of cliched peripheral characters (wacky friend, slutty next door neighbour etc).

All the characters in Gavin and Stacey (apart from Gavin and Stacey) are fantastic. I love the elderly neighbour. ("I've been hammered since ten o'clock this morning", "Where's the salad? Here's your salad!")

Absolutely love it. The meal out after Gavin and Stacey get back from honeymoon is my favourite episode, the one where everyone disappears one by one until it's only Smithy and Bryn left at the table, and Nessa's pregnancy's revealed.

My favourite Nessa lines are about working for Eddie Stobart and "I just can’t believe I’m pregnant by Smithy, out of all the people I slept with, not Nigel Havers, John Prescott, not any of Goldie Looking Chain!"

I love Mick, Gavin, Smithy failing in the John Barnes England rap and Pam coming in and rescuing it.

Dawn and Pete's role play at the bar during the wedding "Just flown in on the red eye"

Doris, RIP. I'll never forget her line about poking me on Facebook Grin

Great lines quoted on Wiki

and a lot of depth to all the characters if you look for it.

We've got the old DVDs and THE BOOK. I could go on Blush

raspberry suicide Julia Davis wrote Nighty Night - she does a fabulous line in hideous characters and dark humour. She recently wrote and starred in Camping which was similar. I can't remember what channel it was on.

Speaking of the inappropriate songs, I loved it when Bryn sang Something Inside So Strong in church.

MrsJayy · 19/10/2016 20:33

There is a mumsnetter whos house was bryns house she had photos as proof.

swooosh · 19/10/2016 20:33

Thanks! I'll look on Netflix, we usually watch on Now TV I think.

Enrique, The meal out after Gavin and Stacey get back from honeymoon is my favourite episode, the one where everyone disappears one by one until it's only Smithy and Bryn left at the table.

I love how everybody is so OK and nice about Dawn and Pete's failed threesome.

Love Gavin and Stacey and Stella. Valleys Welsh here and agree that it was a documentary!
Off for some 'me time' now....

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 19/10/2016 20:43

I found Nighty Night an uncomfortable watch. She was beyond awful.
