Gavin & Stacey

Just binge watched Gavin & Stacey on Netflix.

It was a great series, wasn't it? Nessa and Smithy were the best characters, obviously. Not surprising given that Cordon and Jones wrote the series.

Some things I liked about the show:

The friendship between Gavin and Smithy - all the in-jokes / silly made-up words / dancing / random dance moves.

How most of the characters are actually very nice and generally care about one another. The Christmas episode (despite the drunk argument and punch) rang very true for me. They clearly love Christmas.

Nessa's wedding dress.

How Nessa and Smithy's baby is always called "Neil the baby". Even in the credits.

Anyone else love this show?

I still think that that first episode is one of the truest pieces of writing that's ever been on telly... the way the friends interact with one another, the nervousness of the first meeting, the steadily getting drinker and losing their inhibitions and then then the very unsexy drunken shagging in the hotel room/en suite!!! It's brilliant (although was always cross that Gav and Smithy get in a black cab In Leicester Square and say "Billericay please mate" to the driver like he wouldn't tell them to fuck right off. I come from very near Billericay and that's not a black cab from central London journey, not unless you're a billionaire.

HeCantBeSerious · 19/10/2016 21:09

I also love Barry Island, Penrith etc.

Penrith is quite far from Cardiff...... Grin

For lovers of Julia Davis, her series "Camping" (this summer) was spectacular.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 19/10/2016 21:15

I did like Camping but it was really dark!! The final episode gave me the heebie jeebies when it all went a bit League of Gentlemen.

I think the Christmas episode was one of the best television depictions of Christmas.

Television family christmases are usually appallingly horrible (Yes, Eastenders, I'm looking at you) or mawkish and sentimental.

Mick cooked an amazing Christmas dinner for everyone. They all pulled crackers, wore paper hats and told cracker jokes. Then they played board games! As one should. Smile

Things got a bit weird, obviously but it's exactly the Christmas dinner I would have hosted (if things got a bit weird).

Am I the only person who really hopes Gavin and Stacey is real ? I can really imagine they are all gearing up for Christmas now etc! When I watch it I have to remind myself these characters don't really exist!NB.. I never share my curry!!!

raspberrysuicide · 19/10/2016 21:57

We use loads of lines from Nighty Night. Especially the "or it just gets nasty" one. Or " actually I hate it can I have the equivalent in cash?"
I'm a wheelchair user myself and thought it was hilarious the way she treated Cathy.

antimatter · 19/10/2016 22:05

My family's favourite too!
I never get bored of watching it.

MrsJayy · 19/10/2016 22:08

Nighty night was brilliant very very dark though. Dawn and Pete are gems my favourite bit is the toilet scene about seth (the black fella)

MrsJayy · 19/10/2016 22:11

Once James Corden falls out of favour in Americe he and Ruth might do a special. Gav and stacey's baby must be at school by now

MrsJayy · 19/10/2016 22:11

America*

Strokethefurrywall · 19/10/2016 22:45

I never ever bore of G&S probably more so because I live overseas and whenever I'm feeling a bit homesick I stick it on. It's absolute comfort watching for me, especially the Christmas Special. James and Ruth absolutely nailed the writing on this show, they really did.

I still remember the bit which made me realise that I would love the show for the rest of my life:

Doris: "Just don't go giving him nothing on the first date"
Stacy: "Really?"
Doris: "Well no, not nothing... a kiss, a cuddle, a cheeky finger..."

FUCKIN' ROARED!!!

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 19/10/2016 23:25

80s Yes www.amazon.co.uk/Gavin-Stacey-Billericay-James-Corden/dp/0007292570 on ebay uk too.

Startled one of my favourite lines is Dawn's sobbing that Seth dissed their photos and said they weren't 'representative' of how they are now Grin

Love, love, love the men's in depth conversation about oven gloves.

Doris was legendary Stroke Anyone order a Chinese? No, it was all about the salad

MaryField · 20/10/2016 07:09

Have just ordered the book! Looks funGrin

he, I know! we lived in s wales for two years and did a fair bit of travelling around at weekends or the holidays. Tenby we could do in a day ( a long day admittedly ) and I could get to Cardiff on the bus from where we were based, used to take about 50 minutes or so , on a good day. The driving was a doddle compared to Essex roads and we made sure the kids saw some of the countryside as well as the seaside places. long time ago now but I did love living there, never been back mind!
I know Billericay fairly well, its true, a black cab driver would be a bit reluctant to go out that far from the west end! would cost a fortune too.

The80sweregreat · 20/10/2016 10:27

.. just goggled it, yes, Penrith is miles from Cardiff !! I think I meant Penarth? anyway, we used to go to the seaside in Wales!

The80sweregreat · 20/10/2016 10:31

not awake yet, its Googled, not as above. I will leave this thread I think as just made too many mistakes! lol

NickiFury · 20/10/2016 10:40

My favourite and I laughed till I cried was Stacy in the chemist having the stand off with the girl who worked there, "how's your DAD? How's your BROTHER?" The emphasis on those two words because Nessa had apparently put them both in hospital. So simple but so funny. I have Welsh family and I have seen them do this when coming across people they don't like, it was so well done.

Liiinoo · 20/10/2016 18:15

I loved the end. Obviously Dave Coaches had to go, but he was so humble and dignified when his Sugar Tits dumped him.

And the Christmas episode when everyone felt so sorry for whoever it was got the Bounty Celebration.

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 21/10/2016 15:33

And the Christmas episode when everyone felt so sorry for whoever it was got the Bounty Celebration.

See, that's the one bit of the series that didn't ring true for me. I fucking loves a Bounty, I do.

I watched the Christmas episode today while I did my nails (I was doing gels so it takes about an hour). I just love the naturalism of it, the little scene where Pam and Mick are trying to work out which John sent them a card is so perfect and excatly how real people talk and act.

Groovee · 21/10/2016 15:53

I love Gavin & Stacey. The bit where Pete's mother appears behind the bar on Christmas Morning and Pete and Dawn had no clue.

And Pete's new wedding ring "Pete/Dawn" "puff daddy" replies Mick.

JustDanceAddict · 22/10/2016 09:43

Loved G&S back in the day. One of the best comedies that has been on in recent years. 'Gavelaaaar', etc.
Nighty Night was great too - the first series was amazing. Very different sort of comedy though.
