hey, can I join? I have read all the books and loved them - yes even the mining - and I'm really upset with what they've done to Ross's character in the show.
There is just no narrative consistency whatsoever, and the relationships between Ross and Demelza and Ross and Elizabeth are completely wrong. If you hadn't read the books - what would you understand of what's going on? That Elizabeth is a wonderful, gentle soul who still holds a candle for Ross, Demelza a nagging harpy who is never happy and neglects her child, and Ross a bit simple in the head but altogether, given the circumstances, justified in indulging in a bit of flirting with Elizabeth.
In (book) reality Elizabeth is cold and superficial, clinging to Ross out of pure neediness after Francis dies, teasing him and tempting him for financial security; Demelza is a devoted mother and wife who keeps her morals even when everyone around her has forgotten what morals even are (glad they kept her speech to Verity about keeping her faith in Ross, but it made no sense in the context of the series!). And Ross? Ross is a bit of a shit who confuses power for lust and weakness for consent and devotion for weakness.
TBH i can't see how this will be a rape now but without it being a rape the whole moral arc of Ross and the evolution of his relationship with Demelza will not make any sense.
Overall I'm very disappointed.
