Or he could be ahead of his time & realise the problem lies with him, so not likely to produce an heir with anyone

Sorry about the queen bee Helen. Has she died or done a bunk? And how do they raise another? Is it like a referendum election? And do you have one of those white suits with a helmet thingy? It's all fascinating.

at bee referendum. When they lose a queen (she does a bunk or dies) or they just want a new one (becuse the existing one is past it), then the workers build an extra big cell in the comb and put an egg in it, which they feed with SpecialStuff aka royal jelly, that prompts the egg to develop into a queen rather than a worker or a drone. They usually hedge their bets and raise more than one, so then they hatch and have queen wars until only one is left (or the hive swarms off in several stages with different queens) So you usually take out all but one of the queen cells before they hatch to prevent that.

I have a white grubby & stained bee suit that needs a wash and re-elasticating. but not today.

I also need to put washing out, I have heard a rumour of thunderstorms later...

Oh, isn't nature wonderful. But why do they need a queen? Is it to sort out the problems caused by the bee referendum which went wrong lay special eggs to keep the hive going? And why isn't there a king? Does she dispose of him once he's resigned because of said referendum done his job with the eggs? Oh, I could go on all day. But won't.
