Anyone catch this with the brilliant Lesley Manville?

Reminds me of Gavin and Stacy a bit, not laugh out of comedy but it's all in the slightly too long pausesGrin

Can't wait for the next one!Smile

First one is on iPlayer atm.

On planner - Havnt seen yet

Davros · 20/05/2016 09:49

Fureal? Just watched it and thought it was awful. The female characters were terrible, even "mum" was annoying but we can cut her some slack as her husband just died. Stupid bimbo, snobby cow and angry old bag. None of the men were anything like as bad

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/05/2016 22:24

Achooooooooooo!!!! Grin

Does that Michael guy from sunshine on leith fancy Kathy?

Jojoanna · 21/05/2016 16:33

I found it sooo slow. The bit where they were eating popcorn was awful i had to turn the sound down

Tigresswoods · 21/05/2016 20:45

Just watched episode 2. I quite like this now. It's clearly going to be one of those slow burn romance things isn't it?!

Not annoying.... Yet!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/05/2016 22:36

Groovee- yes that was the point of the whole episodeGrin

Watched the first 2 episodes on catch up - I quite liked it although would prefer the son and girlfriend characters to be toned down a bit. give them a bit of common sense!

Lesley Manville is great, as usual

JustHappy3 · 22/05/2016 19:18

It's fabulous. It has a depth and pathos that's lacking in a lot of shows. The unrequited love was superbly acted. The ditzy girlfriend traumatised by her ex is both sledghammer full on and subtle - superbly acted. The evil girlfriend of the brother is slightly ham fisted but reminded me of my mil - people are like that in real life. Can't wait for the next episode tbh.

littlemissneela · 22/05/2016 20:36

frillyflower - I think the whole thing of her losing her glasses, was she was very preocupied with her husbands funeral.

I really like Mum, and Lesley Manfield is just perfect. The second episode wasn't as strong as the first, but I hope things will be good for the rest of them. Its just a nice, subtle comedy. I think some programmes are just so very over the top and feel the need to spoon feed you.

As for I Want My Wife Back...thats just plain awful.

littlemissneela · 22/05/2016 20:37

Oops *Manville Grin

southeastdweller · 22/05/2016 20:38

I agree JustHappy. It's one of the best shows on at the moment. The highlight of the second episode for me was the scene with Pauline and Cathy. The tone went from comical to poignant in about two seconds and was totally believable.

Apparently next week we find out more about Kelly's past.

limitedperiodonly · 22/05/2016 22:38

I love it. I wanted to kill Kelly. I know someone who is as stupid yet as patronising as her. I don't know how I keep my hands from warmly embracing her round the throat. Jason is a shallow stupid cunt too.

BearFeet · 23/05/2016 09:42

Not as good as the first episode but will defiantly carry on watching.

Davros · 23/05/2016 15:11

I gave it another go with episode 2 and I still think it's dire. Awful female characters. Not funny either. So I will bow out and not spoil the thread any further Halo!

DaisyAdair · 23/05/2016 15:27

I quite like it, it's gentle, unchallenging and well observed.

I love the interaction between Cathy and Kelly.

And I know people in RL like most of the characters Smile

Cathy's politeness in that episode was driving me mad so I'm glad she pointed out to Kelly's mum how horrible she was to her daughter.

Groovee · 28/05/2016 13:37

I couldn't get into episode 3!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/05/2016 14:06

She was biding her time, she did well. I need to channel her more often, I explode too quicklyBlush

The phone call to millionaire made me cringe with every fibre of my being !!Grin

The80sweregreat · 28/05/2016 16:10

Kelly's mum was Rainie in EastEnders, similar kind of character too!

I want Michael to just ask Cathy out for a drink.
The call to the millionaire, just awful. Pauline has to be the worst character in a comedy ever.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 28/05/2016 21:32

I just love this. I find all the characters with the possible exception of the son either grow on me (Cathy, Kelly, Michael, Cathy's brother) or grate on me (Pauline is fabulously awful) every episode. The end of episode 3 when Kelly's mum realised what a bitch she'd been but Kellt still got it wrong was perfect.

BearFeet · 28/05/2016 21:56

I seem to love it and hate it in equal measure now after episode 3 🤔 I'll carry on watching but it's an odd one.

aliasjoey · 28/05/2016 23:15

Up til now Kelly made me cringe with her rude comments and bimbo act.

Then I watched the episode with her mum, and suddenly everything fell into place. Admittedly I have had a glass of Wine but that scene actually made me cry. Lesley Manville is brilliant.
