I'm watching with my Dm, who taught me to sew on her hand-cranked 'vintage' Singer, c. 1910 (the machine - that's not when she taught me to sew btw).

We're commenting on Esme's interesting ensemble...

Well, even my new ££££ machine doesn't do much more than those! If you can't do a lapped zip you shouldn't be sewing.

As someone who sews tailored clothes it it like car crash TV!

They don't line anything do they? I'm not sure it would be that comfy to wear!

We were just saying that if any if them had ever done sashing in a patchwork quilt, this dress would have been a breeze.

I think the sewing quality is poor because they're rushing.

Don't you just wish you could experience those outfits on a crowded tube on a hot summers day in the 60's? I can smell them from here.

Those trousers of Esme's made out of a PVC shower curtain are bleedin' awful!!

I loved that machine Roussette. It had a lovely pointy shuttle as a bobbin.

All of them are so chatty today.

Gosh yes I remember, and it was so slow wasn't it... but at least the machine never ran away with you like an electric one!

I can smell the PVC from here too! I had some PVC boots, god they stunk!

I have got two handcranks and two other vintage machines, I love them, also have a new, basic mechanical Bernina.

Does anyone follow the Male Pattern Boldness blog? He's funny, very informative about sewing, and seems to own about 50 vintage machines, many of which he literally picked up off the streets of NY when they were left out with the trash.
