Outlander. wtf?

Just started watching Outlander and I am wondering if they could have made it any more inaccurate.

Ok so picking up on things like referring to Inverness as a city in the 1940s is maybe a bit picky (it didn't become a city until very recently).

But the constant references to the redcoats as the 'English'. FFS. Surely if they had done even a teeny tiny amount of research they would know it wasn't Scots v the English!?!

The Highland Gaels who speak both Gaelic and English.

Or I am too early in and all the inaccuracies turn out to be because it's all on her head?

Anyone else wants to pick holes? Or to try to convince me it is worth sticking with?

It's very entertaining and the men in kilts can be quite braw.

It's fiction, not historical documentary. I really don't think looking for inaccuracies is going to go well in a drama based on a premise of time travel??? The Loch Ness Monster even makes an appearance (in the book at least) and that's hardly accurate, is it?

Yes it's not perfect, but it's still my favourite series of books. Stick with it, don't overthink it, and definitely read the books which are even better than the TV series. I for one have found it has sparked an interest in me in Scottish history, even if the book details aren't perfect.

Seriously, it's a great story.

'They' by the way is Diana Gabaldon, the author, and she's American so is starting from no local knowledge whatsoever. She wrote the first book as a 'practice' novel, before she started on the real thing, only it was so popular that she never got the real thing but has instead published 8 more books in the series and several side stories. I don't think she was too worried at the time about the finer points.

I am trying to go with it but it does jar a bit when its not just a case of the wrong tartan but actually the wrong protagonists in a civil war.

Explains a lot that it was written by an American (such as not knowing Scotland has always and will always be part of Great Britain).

She'd have been better going down the GOT route and making somewhen up. Then no one can complain

Just go with the story as it is. It's a great series but not a patch on the books

Treat it as an American's view of Scotland and you'll be OK.

Who watches fantasy fiction like this for accuracy?

Was the clue not in the fact that Claire went back in time through some standing stones?? And that mad Jack (whatever his name) is her husband?

It's absolute nonsense, however Jamie is uberfit and men look great in kilts.

The mistaken belief that the Jacobite rebellion was a war between the Scots and English is a particular bugbear of mine being as it is the cause of much nationalism and some racism in the North of Scotland. The '45, the Clearances and the diaspora are all sad chapters in Highland history but not the fault of the English. made all the more rancorous growing up the subject of much anti-Catholic hatred at the hands of Protestant classmates who still somehow managed to be pro-Jacobite due to a complete misinterpretation of their own history.

But surely, fantasy though it is, if you go to the trouble of setting something in a recognisable historical period you do at least a teeny bit of research. Or else just set it entirely in a fantasy era a la GOT.

Yes, she is American so can almost be excused but half the people who worked on that are Scots and so you'd have assumed one of them might have said something!?!

Men in kilts don't entirely make up for it as I see those relatively regularly anyway.

The standing stones thing though - that happens all the time surely? Does to me.
