Outlander. wtf?

Just started watching Outlander and I am wondering if they could have made it any more inaccurate.

Ok so picking up on things like referring to Inverness as a city in the 1940s is maybe a bit picky (it didn't become a city until very recently).

But the constant references to the redcoats as the 'English'. FFS. Surely if they had done even a teeny tiny amount of research they would know it wasn't Scots v the English!?!

The Highland Gaels who speak both Gaelic and English.

Or I am too early in and all the inaccuracies turn out to be because it's all on her head?

Anyone else wants to pick holes? Or to try to convince me it is worth sticking with?

I have a theory about the ghost (it's rubbish, and it doesn't add up, if I think about it too hard Grin) but I can't say anything without spoilering.

hud I'd keep your name as it is, I knew what you meant.

Arrr I'm having outlander withdrawal symptoms SadSad I had Amazon prime on a months free trail and watched the whole series in 8 days now nothing!

hudyerwheesht · 20/01/2016 19:32

I feel your pain, gingerboy, this time last week I was averaging 2 episodes a day and now I'm kind of scratching around for something to watch. Got loads of things saved up - recorded while I was on my Outlander binge- but nothing is quite appealing to me. Sad

Sunnymeg · 20/01/2016 20:45

In the later books, they are beginning to understand the mechanics of time travel. I think Jamie uses this knowledge to go forward to see Clare one last time. I've heard Diana Gabaldon speak and someone asked her about the ghost and her answer made it sound like it wasn't a ghost.

gingerboy1912 · 20/01/2016 21:14

Hid I feel the same I have lots to watch but can't settle to anything. Can't even go back to outlander and re watch the sex scenes good bits as its disappeared with my free trial of Amazon prime. Sad

Wasn't overly impressed with a lot of the clothes. Especially the wedding dress, that was awful, like a weird mish mash of historical clothes meets sexed up Hollywood historical clothes. The loose hair in a culture where hair was covered bugs me too. It would be akin to walking down the street in your underwear and hoping to go unnoticed.

Redglitter · 20/01/2016 23:45

Sunnymeg It IS a ghost. Absolutely no question about it. Jamie never has and never ever will time travel.

Diana Gabaldon has been very clear on both those points Smile

I know where you're coming from, but essentially it's a TV series based on a novel about a woman who falls backward through time. Written by an American who has probably never seen Scotland on a map, let alone in real life. I think historical clothing inaccuracies was the least of their worries Grin

FannyFifer · 21/01/2016 00:10

I prefer when Jamie is wearing no clothes anyway. Wink

tabulahrasa · 21/01/2016 00:13

Hmm, I remember his 'ghost' being mentioned in the books already...it didn't explain it explain it, but it was definitely already mentioned by Jamie while talking to Claire.

SenecaFalls · 21/01/2016 00:13

There are more clothing inaccuracies in the books, at least the early ones, especially regarding highland dress in the 18th century. The clothes in the TV show are more accurate, but there are some modern elements. The costume designer has a blog and she talks about the pressures to sex up period costuming for modern tastes. She used an 18th century French court dress as the inspiration for the wedding dress, and she admits that it had to read as a wedding dress for modern audiences and that influenced the design. Also there was originally a frill on the bodice that made the neckline higher, but it was so delicate that taking the cloak off and on for all the takes eroded it to the point of invisibility.

Redglitter · 21/01/2016 00:23

In the book when Jamie mentions seeing Claire it was a dream he had. It was a different occasion to the ghost. They're 2 separate incidents

(Can you tell I spend too much time in outlander groups Wink )

Stumbletrip40 · 21/01/2016 09:35

I've got quite a fondness for Jamie's kilt but I'm generally a fan of ye olde period guff, although I do wish the historical accuracy could be relied upon!

hudyerwheesht · 21/01/2016 13:36

gingerboy you may wish to check out Youtube. The channel it's shown on has its own youtube channel. There's quite a few clip collections.

I can especially recommend the videos of cast members saying the gaelic phrases and in particular the one where lovely Sam says "Sassenach" sexily to the camera.

Not a new show to get into as such but takes the edge off. Smile

hudyerwheesht · 21/01/2016 13:40

I always assumed it was a ghost, given the description Frank gives of him.

What concerns me is that he looks quite young and that and the fact that he is haunting her in the first place would suggest Claire and him are not destined for a long life together. Sad

Redglitter · 21/01/2016 14:03

The books are currently at book 8 and book 9 is being written. I think at the end of book 8 Claire was about 69 and Jamie 65 ish

SenecaFalls · 21/01/2016 14:09

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE LATER BOOKS

Old love, yes. And still DTD about twice a day. Grin

hudyerwheesht · 21/01/2016 14:13

Hmm, interesting. Well spoiler or not I'm glad he's not going to have some tragic premature ending.

Funniest thing about Outlander is that Cameron got it banned from airing in UK before the Referendum

Surprised he didn't order a mass burning of all Braveheart DVDs too Grin

The email, sent from Sony vice president Keith Weaver to chief executive Michael Lynton and other senior Sony figures, outlines the focus of the meeting, with particular reference to ‘overall investment in the UK’.

"The email states [sic]: “From a SPE [Sony Pictures Entertainment] perspective, your meeting with Prime Minister Cameron on Monday will likely focus on our overall investment in the U.K. - with special emphasis on...the importance of OUTLANDER (i.e. particularly vis-à-vis the political issues in the U.K. as Scotland contemplates detachment this Fall)."

Redglitter · 21/01/2016 15:31

I don't believe that he got it banned. It aired on Aug 9 in the US the referendum was Sept 15th. Realistically it was never going to be shown on here before then. A friend of mine works for Sky and she said they were looking at it for the New Year schedules if they'd purchased it.

Rather bloody insulting for them to imply were so thick were likely to be swayed by a TV show

gingerboy1912 · 21/01/2016 17:48

Thanks hud Smile

Sunnymeg · 21/01/2016 20:02

Redglitter, all I can say is that when I saw Diana speak at the Oxford Literary Festival she gave another impression. Perhaps she was being playful and didn't really mean how her answer came across. Hopefully we will find out in book 9 or book 10.

FannyFifer · 21/01/2016 20:09

I may have been lurking around the Outlander set today. Grin

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/01/2016 20:36

fanny! What did you spy? Any redheads in kilts? Grin

Redglitter · 21/01/2016 20:38
