A new 5-part thriller is starting on BBC 2, 9th November at 9pm

A romance between an MI6 code genius and an ordinary man promises happiness. But tragedy strikes when the spy dies in suspicious circumstances, forcing his lover to pursue the truth behind his death.

Have a look at the trailers and write-ups and see if you fancy watching it and joining in this MN thread.

''You might be the most innocent person I know'' - This is a clip from episode 1: On a walk by the sea, Danny flirtatiously questions whether Alex did background checks on him before going on their date.

Sorry if I've caused confusion, I'm confused myself if it helps Xmas Grin

At the start of the ep, Danny is on the phone following his instructions to get in the bath, get changed etc. He gets into the taxi (at about 3 mins 12) and notices that he cannot unlock the door. We then see a shot of the driver's eyes in the rear view mirror.

At around 54 mins 25 in we see Scottie in a taxi which he also can't unlock and we see a view of his taxi driver in the rear view mirror.

I'm sure it's the same person. It was the fact that it showed the Scottie couldn't open the door that made me think it was the same guy.

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 02/12/2015 13:57

Were they black cabs? because don't those always lock the passenger in automatically so the fare doesn't jump out without paying?

Some of the driving has been a bit hair raising, Rich and the driver who took Rich and Danny particularly.

squoosh · 02/12/2015 14:00

Didn't it show gases wafting into the passenger side of the taxi?

Hamsolo · 02/12/2015 14:03

It was definitely the same driver (I accidentally watched the end before the beginning).

I was really disappointed in the secret on the memory stick - it seemed so far fetched that it really pulled in the opposite direction to the realism that I'd been enjoying. It suddenly felt almost sci fi.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 02/12/2015 14:03

Yes I noticed the gas, it reminded me of an episode of CSI (I think, it may have been Criminal Minds) where somebody was using gas in taxis to knock people out and kill them.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 02/12/2015 14:06

I don't actually think what was on the memory stick was important to the story, it just had to be something that would be enough to kill Alex over. The point was that he had something important.

squoosh · 02/12/2015 14:09

It's definitely become more about the relationship between the two and less about the actual Top Secret stuff. Which I personally think is a bit of a shame.

JustCallMeDory · 02/12/2015 14:48

Nooooo squoosh I could quite happily leave all the top secrety spy-y stuff and just concentrate on the relationship Blush

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/12/2015 14:50

The doppelganger. Why did he tell Danny what he did? Did 'they' arrange the same clothes and them to meet? And if so, why? Do 'they' have that much time on their hands? I understand Alex is important to them, but is Danny really worth all that time and effort?

Also, Alex is such a genius would 'they' kill him or use him to their advantage?

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/12/2015 14:52

As soon as Danny told Scottie he loved him I knew he was going to die :/

squoosh · 02/12/2015 14:56

Oh you're just an old softie Dory! Grin

I'm more like 'ahhhh, they're in love, ahhh it's going so well, oh dear he's disappeared, oh dear is that his decomposing body in a trunk? Okay now on with the spy stuff please'.

I don't need 100 hundred shots per episode of Danny looking wistful.

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/12/2015 14:58

I wanted to slap Alex for his mathematical probability of meeting your soulmate conversation. Tbh I don't know what Danny saw in him, considering that they were both so different. (I know it's just a TV show!)

squoosh · 02/12/2015 15:02

Oh yes, the soulmate conversation!

I agreed with Danny. You're sitting by a fire under the stars with your beloved. It's not a time to be clinical!

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/12/2015 15:19

Can someone please clarify something that I am still confused about?
So the attic. Is it now clear that it was all staged and not really Alex's? Therefore 'they' set it up and his 'mum' was lying?

givemushypeasachance · 02/12/2015 15:36

I think if you believe what Danny believes - that Alex was sexually naive and outside of the one incident with the escort, never saw anyone else - then yes. "They" took Danny's background of drug use, borderline BDSM (the strangling with belts thing he did with a guy once) and generally reckless sexual activity and "built" the attic scene around the believable story they wanted to write.

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/12/2015 15:59

Thanks I don't know what's a truth and what's a lie anymore, and I suppose that's probably the point.

JustCallMeDory · 02/12/2015 17:41

squoosh softy / old letch - take your pick Wink . Let's face it, Alex is gorgeous, so the more shots we get of Danny looking whistful and having flashbacks to the lovely cheekboned one, the better.

JustCallMeDory · 02/12/2015 17:44

I agreed with Danny. You're sitting by a fire under the stars with your beloved. It's not a time to be clinical!

Yes, but we get to see how much Danny changed Alex's view on the world from someone cold and mathematical about life (soul mate is a horrible idea) to someone who realised exactly how much Danny meant to him, how Danny had become his whole world when he set the code for 000000001

See - romantic, innit?

Fiderer · 02/12/2015 17:56

Romantic - yes.

But I wanted both the love story and the spy stuff.

The lying wotsit was just guff.

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/12/2015 18:02

Is Alex really dead? Or is a soppy happy ending too much to hope for?

AppleYumYum · 02/12/2015 18:05

Hmm I was expecting some kind of big reveal about how Scottie knew Alex - that scene where they met for the first time in the Geisha singing club and Scottie gave him the third degree?

sadwidow28 · 02/12/2015 18:29

Okay .... I have got the two taxi drivers.

Danny: Where are we going?

Distorted voice: Do you want to know who Alex was or not?

Distorted voice: The doors are locked, Danny. No way out. No way back. I want to take you on a journey... into Alex's past.

---------

Danny: Scottie?

Scottie: Danny. Danny...

Danny: Scottie?

Scottie: There will be a note.

------------

YES! They look like the same fella to me

The whole 'lying formula' might be a bit naff but I think it's an overarching analogy(?) for the whole show?
How do we know our loved ones are telling us the truth (Danny and Alex)? Or our friends (Danny & Scottie?) Our government ('they'). How much of what we know is a lie, an untruth, an illusion, or simply something that we want to believe even if the signs/numbers are there in front of us?
And if we took away the ability to lie, if we were all truthful, where would we be? Trust no-one? Believe everyone?

sadwidow28 · 02/12/2015 19:47

I find the idea of lying fascinating. It is a milestone in child development age 3/4 yrs old. Children cannot lie before that age - so where do they get the concept from?
