A new 5-part thriller is starting on BBC 2, 9th November at 9pm

A romance between an MI6 code genius and an ordinary man promises happiness. But tragedy strikes when the spy dies in suspicious circumstances, forcing his lover to pursue the truth behind his death.

Have a look at the trailers and write-ups and see if you fancy watching it and joining in this MN thread.

''You might be the most innocent person I know'' - This is a clip from episode 1: On a walk by the sea, Danny flirtatiously questions whether Alex did background checks on him before going on their date.

Oh yes - and the other part of the 'rule' is that we don't discuss the spoilers before the episode is aired so that we don't give away anything to those who don't want to read them.

Now is that okay?

All fine by me, widow!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/11/2015 13:56

I agree with all of that too. The simplest thing to do with spoilers is to try to keep stum about them, as I have found with reference to The Archers, as those who don't like them really, really don't like them and it causes a terrible stushie.

Or (as we have done with TA) start a clearly labelled separate thread, but actually in the case of what was mentioned above it wouldn't really have warranted a whole extra thread. Nothing said on this thread has actually constituted a spoiler, although I can see why some people thought it must have done.

DuchessofMalfi · 25/11/2015 14:13

I certainly did not mean to cause any offence to anyone. I have no idea what will happen in the next episode. I don't think what I said was in any way spoiling the plot so will in future keep my thoughts to myself.

MrsToddsShortcut · 25/11/2015 14:30

Am so enjoying this series. And actually, one of the reasons I love it is that my DM, who has long suffered with what I can only describe as 'institutional homophobia' has had a massive change of heart. The characters are so beautifully played and the series is so beautifully written that for the first time, she has been able to see just a relationship rather than a gay relationship Smile

On the other hand, Lovely Mark Gatiss actually came very damn close to being unwatchable, so brilliant was his portrayal of that utterly hideous, horrible character. He genuinely made my skin crawl.

And I suspect Scottie of dark things. Although I don't want to...

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 14:31

I always find Mark Gatiss to be a bit creepy, so had no huge reaction to his character in this.

sadwidow28 · 25/11/2015 14:38

Duchess I hope I wrote my previous posts very sensitively and just suggested a way forward for our thread.

I followed the clues to the spoiler, because that is what I love to do. The anticipation is part of the fun for me. But I understand that those who really don't want to read spoilers don't even want a 'hint' - and that is all you posted. Just a 'ickle hint without discussing implications or any of the other things we read by following the clues.

But, we'll agree to not discuss spoilers at all until the episode is aired.

[We have a spoiler link on the Downton Abbey thread that we still can't discuss because it looks like it has been saved for the Christmas Special. I have to bite my hand and keep stumm every time I post. Grin ]

MrsTodd what a lovely post about your DM. Thank you for sharing.

I thought I would struggle with seeing homosexual relationships on my TV (I don't even watch heterosexual 'bed scenes' because of my own personal upbringing) but I watch these in the context within which they explain the story. There is nothing gratuitous about them - each scene has given us an understanding of the current/previous life of Danny.

I do believe that Danny found love with Alex/Alistair for the first time in his life. But I am not so sure about Alex any more ............. grrr! If he let Danny down and set him up, I think I will be soooo cross. Angry

If anyone wants to catch-up on iplayer and join in the thread, I'll leave the links here:

London Spy - episode one

London Spy - episode two

London Spy - episode three

If anyone is watching or re-watching an episode and wonders what the dialogue was, I use the Forever Dreaming site that gets TV episode transcriptions up within about 12 hours. (How they do it I don't know. It is a site run by volunteers. Kudos to them!)

London Spy - transcription of episode one - Lullaby

London Spy - transcription of episode two - Strangers

London Spy - transcription of episode three - Blue

I found this site for Unforgotten and then it was more useful when River had a lot of mumbling ............. say no more Wink

Duchess don't go! You didn't spoil anything or give anything away - in fact, I was impressed with how subtle you were.

I love a hint about what might be coming and you left it up to everyone to decide whether they wanted to look or not. Perfect thread manners, I think.

Good housekeeping sadwidow

JustCallMeDory · 25/11/2015 16:18

Wait - don't go either soupdragon (especially with your lovely name which makes me smile every time I see it). It was a one off!

MuchasSmoochas · 25/11/2015 17:41

Good rules Widow. I love a spoiler.. and then hate myself after for spoiling it.

cherrytree63 · 25/11/2015 18:25

I think this thread is brilliant, thanks Sad for starting it!

Just catching up with this. I think I was so tired watching this week's episode (and a phonecall in the middle - grrr) that I missed the club bit! The Guardian links are great, sadwidow.

Who is the London Spy? At first it seems to be Alex, but is it Danny or Scottie?

JustCallMeDory · 26/11/2015 17:21

I think I've cracked it... I think I know the code Danny needs to put in the locked thingy to unlock it. But now I daren't say in case it's a spoiler.

Ruling please, OP.

squoosh · 26/11/2015 17:29

Theories are fine surely? It's only a spoiler if you know it to be true. Otherwise you're just a clever clogs! Grin

notafanofwinter · 26/11/2015 17:35

I'd love to know your theory.

JustCallMeDory · 26/11/2015 18:03

squoosh good point! I was being a bit presumptuous there.

Okay - I was updating DH on the last episode as he's been away for work and missed it. And I was telling him how Danny had to work out what the code could be - something only he'd know.

Then I remembered that Alex had said how he was good with numbers and hadn't written down Danny's friend's phone number (after Danny had smashed his phone)... so maybe the code is that phone number - the one he'd remembered and without writing down and which he knows Danny knows he knows IYSWIM (think I'm getting lost in this sentence).

What d'you think? Plausible?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 26/11/2015 18:54

I'm not sure the combination was long enough for a phone number, but if it is that's very possible!

JustCallMeDory · 26/11/2015 18:58
Smile
Gruach · 26/11/2015 19:14

Interesting ...

It hadn't occurred to me that we might be able to work it out. Perhaps it's that, or something else we have seen.

weaselwords · 26/11/2015 19:31

I have a theory that it's the coordinates of somewhere they went together. All those maps must be a clue.

Elendon · 26/11/2015 20:31

Oh I like the coordinates idea weasel and if I recall correctly, they tramped over a fence that had a sign saying "Danger, Keep Out", in the first episode.

I know people who collect OS maps, so didn't think it was strange, though I did think why have a trunk in the boot of the car?

Justcallme please share your theory!

Elendon · 26/11/2015 20:35

Sorry Justcallme. It could be both coordinates and a phone number.

Some clever theories on here. I'm so intrigued by the whole set up. This is such an excellent programme.
