Am thinking of getting a subscription for my dad

How much does it cost and what package do you have?

How much choice do you have within your package?

What is the cheapest and is it worth having or do you need the add ons?

How much are the add on extras?

Thanks for your help

If you can get telewest digi cable its far better and cheaper.

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 02/12/2006 12:48

Hmm, can't answer all those questions! I think the cheapest package is £19 per month. We pay £46 a month but we have it in two rooms, we have Sky+ (so you can record, pause, rewind etc) and we have the package with sports but we don't have the standard movies (you still have box office though where you can pay £3 or £4, can't remember which, for a film and they tend to be the latest ones).
There is usually an installation charge - might be £100ish but there are often offers on where you might get this free.

Depends what he wants to watch - would Freeview not be an option for him?

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 02/12/2006 12:53

Sorry should have given more info

No he can't have FREEVIEW cos the TV signal isn't strong enough

There isn't cable near to their house.

He would NOT want SKY + for recording

He would not really want the movies

He WOULD want the sport ie Cricket in Aussie

We have a standard box (not Sky+), we subscribe to all sports channels but no films and we pay £37 a month

tallulah · 02/12/2006 13:00

They are doing a Xmas present pack of 2 channel packages plus sports for £150 for 6 months here

We love our sky and only have the basic family packet for, I think £21 a month, as that does us, got all the childrens channels, some free movie channels, including free view now, and all sorts of other channels!
When we moved into this house, we looked into NTL, because the people that lived here before had it, but after looking into the packs etc...we decided to stick with sky, even though it meant that we had to pay £40 to get the dish up!

TwinkleInSantasEye · 02/12/2006 23:54

BEWARE SKY!!! In my experience the customer service is absolutely rubbish. They keep you on hold for 30 minutes plus when you phone up and they do not respond to e-mails. When we moved house we never got Sky installed at our new address, however Sky somehow managed to keep charging us for months of viewing that we never had. We had been given completely misleading advice when we rang to cancel before moving. They basically treated us like liars and to this day it has never been properly resolved. Be VERY careful!!!

Quootiepie · 03/12/2006 00:38

Have SKY, but agree customer serive is awful. We paid and waited over a month for HD to be installed (doesnt matter to them as we had paid!) then the man turned up 2 hours earler than arranged , we werent in, so cancelled. He did that twice. Finally got it installed and they mucked up the multi room.... they are charging for a full package, but we cant view anything other than 1,2 3 & 4 - we rung and they said they'd sort it, but they havent. You wait 30 mins + on the phone, and you cant understand them when you do get through. And they put their prices up ALL the time. Its £47 now I think, £10 extra for multi room and £10 extra (ontop of 300 odd for the box) for HD which is only 12 channels

You'll be glad to hear that Sky are making a lot of improvements at the moment so customer services will be one section.

My husband works in another dept. What did you mean you couldn't understand them? Did you get through to the call centre in India? They are getting rid of them because of communication problems.

TwinkleInSantasEye · 03/12/2006 22:21

Thank God for that TwoIfBySea - the (presumably) Indian women I had to deal with were SO rude to me!! Socci - in the end Sky got themselves so confused that we got the money back that they had previously refunded and then taken back again . Don't think they have realised this so I don't really want to draw their attention back to us IYSWIM. But I will NEVER deal with them again.

saffy202 · 03/12/2006 22:27

For Sky Sports 1 which does us we pay £32, but they do tend to put their prices up regularly.

WeFrizyouamerrychristmas · 03/12/2006 22:27

Just get Freeview, there's enough to watch on there, sky are horrible to deal with, and if you've had them and then swap onto free view they a) hate it and b) don't stop pestering you for years, until you finally loose it at them....sigh.....never having it again.

expatinscotland · 03/12/2006 22:30

Nope, just Freeview.

Had Sky.

Was a rip off.

santasaltire · 03/12/2006 22:32

I must say whenever i have tried their customer services, i always seem to get scottish people, although i haven't called them for a while.
We have a package that is £37 a month. We have Sky sports 1 and 3, and movies 1,3,5,7 and 9. DH keeps suggesting we get rid of the movies, but i won't until he lets me get rid of the sport, i am so sick of it.

expatinscotland · 03/12/2006 22:34

When we had them, I got the call centre in India several times.

I just kept ringing off and ringing back until I got a Northern Irish person.

DH has really strong Scottish accent and he had a lot of communication problems w/India.

santasaltire · 03/12/2006 22:36

Expat, i know what it's like with scots accents and call centres in India. I have put the phone down on them several times and wrote to one insurance company and told them that i would be cancelling my policy on the grounds that i couldn't understand their staff, and how could i feel confident using a company who used staff that didn't pronounce my name, or my address correctly. One woman called Fife - Feefee!

TwinkleInSantasEye · 03/12/2006 22:43

Oh dear, just re-read my post - didn't mean to imply that Indian women are rude . Just that the communication issues got them and me very frustrated. I'll stop digging now!

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 04/12/2006 12:53

Crumbs it does sound a bit of a problem after it is installed.

I don't know whether it is a good idea now

Thanks for letting me know the pitfalls etc.

You guys are deffo brill

RTKM, We have had SKY for just over six years now. Can honestly say that we have never had a problem with them.

maretta · 04/12/2006 13:08

We have a sky box but no longer subscribe to any channels. We still get all free channels through the sky box - bbc,itv,4,5 and a couple of others.

We do pay #10 a month for sky +, which is well worth it.

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 04/12/2006 13:09

Thanks

I am so mixed up now

I don't want to get him a pressie that will cause him mega probs iyswim
