Richard Osman on Have I got News For You

Was crap.

Jeremy Clarkson was host so Richard made joke after joke after joke at his expense. Clarkson didn't really react so Osman's constant jokes ended up rather tiresome and bullyish. There was hideously clunky editing at the end with a contretemps between the two of them so goodness knows what happened there. Paul did his best to salvage the mood with some clowning, but it wasn't enough.

Very poor Richard.

It was all crap. Apart from lovely Ian.

Oblique27 · 02/10/2015 22:48

RO is not a nice person, I believe

Sallyingforth · 02/10/2015 22:51

As usual, Ian's comments were the best part of the show.

RiverTam · 02/10/2015 22:53

Oh, isn't he? I follow him on Twitter, he's very funny in that. I agree it was a it much in hignfy but he hit the mark a few times.

thatstoast · 02/10/2015 22:57

I haven't seen the show, I'll have to watch on catch up. I believe Richard Osman is a nice person though.

TiggyD · 02/10/2015 23:01

I feel like watching it again to analyse where it all went wrong.

It was a bit painful. There were too many Clarkson jibes but then of course they don't know how the show is going to be edited. I don't think anyone really wanted Clarkson to be there (why the host for the first episode of the series? Ugh) and by the end I think Clarkson was getting fed up of it too. He was allowed to make several unnecessary plugs for his new show and the whole thing felt a bit like a ratings-grabbing exercise that fell flat.

GirlOverboard · 03/10/2015 05:42

I always thought there was something a little smug and self-satisfied about Richard Osman. After last night I just outright dislike him. Perhaps his jokes would have worked better if Clarkson had hosted the show last series as planned. But it's six months later, people have moved on. And I thought it was a bit rich of him to slag off Clarkson's presenting skills. Perhaps it's just jealousy. After all, Clarkson has hosted HIGNFY 12 times. Osman hosted it once and was so crap that he was demoted back to panellist.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to next week, the line-up is miles better (Kathy Burke, Nish Kumar and Charlie Brooker).

Awholelottanosy · 03/10/2015 06:00

I actually felt sorry for Clarkson and that's saying something!

SunnyL · 03/10/2015 06:46

Actually I was with RO up until the last couple. Jeremy Clarkson assaulted a member of his team but is going to make.millions. He deserves the few jokes at his expense.

TheSkiingGardener · 03/10/2015 06:54

It was painful. RO just looked like an idiot who made some cheap jibes that fell flat.

InimitableJeeves · 03/10/2015 07:02

Come off it, GirlOverboard, how on earth is being a panellist "demotion"? It's a much harder job given that the chairman's role is scripted whilst panellists have to be consistently witty off the cuff - which Osman succeeds in brilliantly, hence the fact that he is repeatedly asked back for this and shows like Would I Lie To You. And certainly I've heard people who have worked with him saying he is lovely to work with.

tribpot · 03/10/2015 07:42

Btw I feel sorry for whoever has to edit the 'Have I Got More News .. ' version of this show - if those were the best bits, finding another 15 mins worth broadcasting is going to be difficult.

mateysmum · 03/10/2015 07:50

I think Clarkson came on fully prepared to be got at and all the stuff about Amazon was initiated by the others. I've always thought RO was quite witty and clever, but last night he brought the whole atmosphere down by some pretty unfunny digs. Merton hardly got a word in.

Haggisfish · 03/10/2015 07:52

Oh I thought he was brilliant-good on him for not letting it drop that Clarkson assaulted someone.

angelos02 · 03/10/2015 07:56

I'm pretty sure most of it is scripted. Not just the host's stuff. You can tell.

BertrandRussell · 03/10/2015 08:00

Hang on, you're feeling sorry for multimillionaire Jeremy Clarkson being given the opportunity to rehabilitate himself with the BBC audience in a largely scripted prime time quiz show...........?Grin

Indulgingmum · 03/10/2015 08:02

I think we have to blame the crap edit. It was very poor and "Clunky" as someone said. I'd say given the influence that prick Clarkson seems to have on the BBC he may have had something to do with them trying to make RO look bad.

mateysmum · 03/10/2015 08:43

Don't feel sorry for JC at all. He can take the knocks and deserves most of them. I just thought that given the ample comedy/satire material there was the programme could have been funnier. Editing doesn't help of course.

OurBlanche · 03/10/2015 08:49

Ian Hislop came closest to referring to the assault - coke reference, 'I thought may have made you angry".

And if you watch the closing credits JC and RO lean towards each other, speak, laugh and seem to be the chattiest of the panel members.

JC employed the 'raise eyebrows and look directly into camera' defence quite a lot. But the whole thing was far less niggling than the verbal shoeing Angus Deyton got!

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2015 09:25

I didn't watch it and won't be because I knew it would be unfunny jokes about Clarkson the whole way through, not a massive RO fan either. Tedious.

OurBlanche · 03/10/2015 09:48

Then you know wrong. It wasn't all about Clarkson at all, regardless of what this morning's media seems to suggest.

And Camilla Long was drily amusing (and quite wicked at times).

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2015 09:51

That's me told. Grin Still won't bother.

OurBlanche · 03/10/2015 09:56

Sorry Sparkling, my only excuse is that me and the damn Siri thing don't gel... I was on my phone and my fat fingers don't work well on it so I was speaking to the bloody thing!

It sounded so very different when I said it out loud.

All apologies Smile

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2015 10:01

OMG you can get the speaky thing to actually type what you say OurBlanche? Respect. Grin My phone hates me and deliberately misunderstands. Angry
