Richard Osman on Have I got News For You

Was crap.

Jeremy Clarkson was host so Richard made joke after joke after joke at his expense. Clarkson didn't really react so Osman's constant jokes ended up rather tiresome and bullyish. There was hideously clunky editing at the end with a contretemps between the two of them so goodness knows what happened there. Paul did his best to salvage the mood with some clowning, but it wasn't enough.

Very poor Richard.

She tries to sabotage me... last week she kept typing chocolate cake!!! Smile

colleysmill · 03/10/2015 10:06

When the announcer said "look who's back!" before the show started I immediately thought Angus Deayton! So JC was a bit disappointing. I remember laughing hysterically when Ian and Paul revealed their t-shirts at angus.

It's funny how some celebs bounce back from adversity (JC, Richard bacon immediately spring to mind) whereas others are never heard of again. Still I'm rambling - not perhaps the best hignfy ever - the extended version might be interesting!

OurBlanche · 03/10/2015 10:07

You can tell I am back on the laptop from the inclusion of smileys!!

scarlets · 05/10/2015 10:58

I like RO on Pointless and on Twitter, but Two Tribes is poor. He was ok on HIGNFY, I'm sure it was mostly scripted.

BertrandRussell · 05/10/2015 11:34

I thought it was really funny. And lots of undercurrents and fascinating body language. I liked IH on Piggate.

InimitableJeeves · 05/10/2015 20:17

I thought Clarkson came on with a game plan to try and kill any jokes about his activities stone dead, and Osman wasn't going to let him get away with it. It was quite revealing how Clarkson slid away from references to punching people. In many respects Deayton's response was much better - IIRC he essentially put his hands up at the beginning and said, OK, I deserve it, bring it on.

Burnshersmurfs · 05/10/2015 20:24

I thought RO was very good- and thought he did well by challenging Clarkson's attempt to skip over the Rebecca Brookes jokes (guess who pays some of Jeremy's wages?) RO gave the program a bit of balance too, otherwise it would have just been a smug Tory smooze-fest.

BertrandRussell · 05/10/2015 20:33

First time Ian Hislop has ever been called a "smug Tory"!

DaimYou · 05/10/2015 20:46

I agree it was odd. RO seemed not to be joking at all but making very seriously meant points about JC's behaviour and the outrageousness of the money he's made out of it. (why was he back on the BBC?)

When RO is making jokes he's very funny, but it didn't seem/feel like he was joking.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/10/2015 20:56

I think it was odd too. I normally like RO but he seemed too try hard. Came over as arrogant and a bully. Very odd. I'm never quite sure how I feel about JC, but thought he was really odd and unlike himself as well. Odd, odd, odd. Ian was normal though, and I always love Paul.

mummytime · 05/10/2015 21:33

Rebecca Brookes doesn't just pay some of JC's wages, but is part of the same (or was) Cotswold group, along with Dave.

Ian was great making some quite left wing points.

The media had pretty much written their reviews before seeing the programme, as there was a lot more to it than RO attacking JC.

SeaMagic · 06/10/2015 07:35

Isn't Ian a smug Tory?

He certainly came across that way.

Or rather a petulant and somewhat rattled smug Tory.

I don't think he likes JC [Corbyn not Clarkson] Grin

mummytime · 06/10/2015 07:46

But he did defend Corbyn at one point. And yes I think Ian is a natural Tory, so its quite refreshing when someone like him defends sticking up for social equality. (I wish I had the script so could quote it.)

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2015 07:54

Good Lord. Did you not hear Ian saying, for example, about pig gate that he couldn't understand people
focussing on something disgusting DC had probably not done when he was 20 when there were so any disgusting things he had actually done when he was 50 to choose from? He's famously left wing! Always has been.

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2015 07:55

Interesting though that people hear his accent and think he must be a Tory!

AnyoneButAndre · 06/10/2015 08:00

I think Osman wasn't funny because he wasn't joking. From his Twitter comments he took the original assault personally because he has been that junior assistant producer being bawled at by git "talent" many many times (though clearly Clarkson would never have hit a man his own size).

LineyReborn · 06/10/2015 08:00

Ian Hislop is a lovely bloke in RL.

DaimYou · 06/10/2015 08:00

I've never quite been able to identify where Ian's politics stand. I think he does an excellent job of being neutral and criticises people on both sides, usually their policies or things they've said/done rather than the actual people. So he could be positive towards someone one week and negative another because of whatever's been in the news that week.

Although I agree his background suggests he "should" be tory, I think he gently takes the mickey out of himself about that.

AnyoneButAndre · 06/10/2015 08:01

Hislop is politically complicated. He's definitely a small c conservative but no clear cut Tory would quote the bedroom tax as something we should hate Cameron for.

AnyoneButAndre · 06/10/2015 08:03

What's really interesting about Hislop is that he's never ever done anything wrong. We know this because he's made so many sworn enemies in Fleet Street who've put huge amounts of effort into trying to find non-existent dirt.

OurBlanche · 06/10/2015 08:04

Defend Corbyn? Well, yes, his words did, but the context, tone of voice, intent, no he really didn't!

And I would imagine that Hislop would be horrified to hear anyone call him a 'natural tory'. His entire professional life in tatters...

DaimYou · 06/10/2015 08:06

I know anyone. He must even pay all his taxes, even though a few years ago, it would have been entirely normal/usual for someone in his position to be using various schemes to reduce tax, it seems he never has.

SeaMagic · 06/10/2015 08:13

Sorry must have missed that, but didn't hear Hislop defending JC or stating that we should hate DC for things he's done recently rather than salivating over PigGate Confused

Admittedly, I was watching with only half an eye [whilst on MN].

However IH seems very establishment to me, it's not just the accent and Oxbridge education... There's a certain smugness to him [which, perhaps unfairly, I associate with being Tory].

I can just imagine him being part of the Chipping Norton set and middle class complacent rather than a revolutionary... However he is editor of Private Eye so obviously doesn't mind stirring the establishment pot...

Interesting...

DaimYou · 06/10/2015 08:17

I've always thought the smug posh bit was him poking fun at himself and people like him. Clearly he is posh and has a lot to feel smug about but I think he recognises that.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/10/2015 09:08

Halfway through started flicking through MN so it wasn't their best effort.
