I have been a fan ever since it started 5 or 6 years ago (when was it ?)

What do you think of the new series so far ?

Is anyone watching it on E4 ?

Me!

I'm loving the new series so far, savouring it actually as there won't be many more. I can understand that people don't thinnk it's as good as it haas been but it's still the best thing on TV for me.

I think the Christopher character is fantastic, so odious in so many ways and yet you find yourself rooting for him...

yellowrose · 29/10/2006 16:16

clayhead - I know what you mean about Christopher ! I loved the scene last week where he goes into Bada Bing to announce his engagement and says something like "Tony, I have learnt so much from you, it's all about family, isn't it ?" - and this from a man who has murdered fiancee no. 1 and is standing in a bar full of bare bum, bare breast women dancing around poles !

I have so little sympathy for him, and yet just like the Tony character, I find myself pitying him for being in a self-made trap. They have so much blood on their hands yet they have kill even more just to stay ahead of the game.

I think it is the most non-glamourous depiction of the mafia I have ever seen (I am a mafia film fan). They are all so hugely fat, half-stupid, unattractive physically and in all other respects(I guess Christopher has some sex appeal, but he isn't exactly god's gift to women !).

I think the series is deliberately focusing on each individual character (a different one each week) to give the programme real depth. The script is so sharp and witty as always and I find myslef bursting into laugher every 5 minutes.

DH thinks I am quite mad, he doesn't get any kicks out of the Sopranos, not like me

Also, loved the episode with the Johnny Sacks wedding. The song they sang! It was hilarious!

I love the way Carmela knows exactly where all the money comes from and yet tries so hard to ignore it.

Did you watch the Mark lawson interview with David Chase? It was interesting.

My dh loves it as much as I do, we actually started watching it as students and now we are married with 2 kids! Do you watch 'The Wire'? The only thing I've watched which I find of a similar standard.

yellowrose · 29/10/2006 18:21

Hi Clay - we seem to be the only Sopranos addicts here

No, not seen "the wire" ? What channel is it on and when ? Will watch it next time.

Also used to love "six feet under", have watched most. Loved the excellent story lines and clever script.

Yeh, I find Carmela is such a loving mother, but a total bimbo in the way she worships Tony !

There was some doc. a few years ago about real life "molls" - you know bimbo wives/girlfriends of of thugs from the East End, including Cray Brothers. Wasn't Barbara Windsor married to a thug ?

Tony's daughter is going the same way, isn't she, she is a very clever lawyer, yet finds it implausable that her father is a murderer !

I have missed 2 episodes of the Sopranos unfortunately when the in-laws were here. Couldn't tape it as didn't have the right wire to connect to the video. Do you think C4 will air it as they did before ? Then I will catch the 2 I missed. Otherwise will have to wait for dvd's.

Another big fan here!! DH and I never miss an episode.
Thankfully we have Sky+ to help us out there!! Have only seen the last 3 series so need to get the first few series on DVD.

yellowrose · 30/10/2006 09:07

superloopy - welcome ! yes hopefully dvd's will be out soon and you can see the ones you missed

OP posts:
MwaHaHappyDaddy · 30/10/2006 15:29

I'm gutted. I was hooked at the first series but since have missed them all. I don't want to watch now as I've missed so much.

I feel a letter to Santa coming on..."please Mr Christmas, I've been a very good boy. I'd love some Sopranos box sets. There's extra whisky and mince pies in it for you and Rudolph".

yeahinaminute · 30/10/2006 15:33

I am Addicted to the Soprano's ( so much so that DD was born to the sound of the Alabama 3 theme tune ... "woke up this morning ... ") I digress .... however I have heard that Christopher ( now back on the bad stuff) may end up with the real estate woman Tony's after .... there'll be trouble at the pork shop to be sure !!

yellowrose · 30/10/2006 18:09

happy daddy - look on ebay incase Santa doesn't bring them for you well worth the investment - they are quite expensive last time I looked, but you can watch them and then re-sell them as "used" !!

yeah - the pork and CANNOLI shop - lol

I am a Sopranos addict, watched it since the beginning. Can't wait for Thursdays to come around!! My favourite character is Paulie 'Walnuts' Galtieri, he is such a total psycho but has some hilarious 'comedy' monents!! Christopher is another great character, and I love Carmela, she is just as nasty as Tony in her own way!!

yellowrose · 30/10/2006 20:06

Bomper welcome - I LOVE the Pauli character - he talks with a whistle in each word - excellent stuff ! Yes and totally comic the way he is behaving right now with his mother (aunt). They are all so unbelievably childish aren't they ?

OP posts:
Bomper · 30/10/2006 21:14

Had to laugh at Paulie this week - 'F*ck the hat!!' LOL!!

bookends · 31/10/2006 09:21

dh and I love Sopranos....tried to keep up but will have to watch the whole series on dvd. I love watching them back to back over a week. Some of the dvd's have a commentary where the director explains the characters and why they are acting or feeling the way they are.

I think I always assumed that Carmela hadn't a clue until she 'stalked' and 'frightened' that neighbour who could get her daughter into the school she wanted to go to. Chilling.

Paulie cracks me up. I remember when he had a rant about untied shoelaces, going to the mens and how they would be covered in urine! (eugh)

yellowrose · 31/10/2006 15:13

bookends - welcome !

I did that too with series 5. Got the whole box on rental and watched the lot in a week.

It was showing just when DS was a few weeks old and we weren't getting any sleep ever let alone have time to watch TV or even set the video.

When DS is older I will have to "blame" him for missing series 5 on TV....lol....although I doubt I will let him ever watch the Sopranos, not until he is at least 21 any way. Far too many swear words and violence !

The scriptwiter is fab. He is a genuis with timing and words.

OP posts:
yellowrose · 31/10/2006 15:16

bookends - some times I wish I could stalk someone to get my son into a good school (just kidding) !

EmsTomot · 31/10/2006 15:41

We love the Sopranos although have missed a couple of this series because we are now parents! I thought it was fab when Chris asked his partner to marry him when she said she was pregnant! - Lets hope she can keep her mouth shut! - I miss Ade though, she was a good character.
I know they do shady stuff, but who else would marry into the maffia?!!!!!!!!!!!! I think Carmella is wonderful too - listen to me talking like they are real!

EmsTomot · 31/10/2006 15:42

Has anyone else heard that Paulie was actually inside in real life because of organised crime?

yellowrose · 31/10/2006 15:45

Ems - no that's interesting about Pauli - he looks and sounds the part. No stereotyping intended - lol !

OP posts:
EmsTomot · 31/10/2006 15:54

My husband read it somewhere - I think he can be very convincing sometimes!!!!!!!
I would love to live in Tony Sopranos house - it is gorgeous!

suzycreamcheese · 31/10/2006 16:02

hey i love it too! but didn't really get the hospital scenario / tony as salesman in hotel dream thing early in this series, its seemed weaker for that, but picking up pace now with story and the dialogue is killer! as ever... last one isn't it? series, I mean! roll on thursday...

bookends · 31/10/2006 16:28

LOL yellowrose...she had a really glassyeyed look about her - scary! Thanks for your welcome - I've only been posting very recently.

Very curious emstomot....anyone got more info. I would love to know more.

I also love that weird hairdo of Tony's second in line - name escapes me. His hunched form and hairdo do it for me.

I despise that man who has the hots for Tony's daughter's boyfriend (phew).

I miss Ade too.... you could sense her turmoil.

Clayhead · 31/10/2006 16:32

From IMDB

Tony Sirico served time in prison during the late 1960s and early '70s for sticking up a few after hours clubs. He left prison for the last time in 1972. He got a part in the 1974 film 'Crazy Joe' which led to him obtaining a Screen Actors Guild card.

Bookeneds, do you mean Silvio? (with the hairdo?)

ItalianJob · 31/10/2006 16:48

I loooove it. Only we can't get Channel 4 so I'm going to wait for Series 6 to come out on DVD. I was so gutted when Ade died.

EmsTomot · 31/10/2006 17:00

How much has Anthony & Meadow grown up?!

yellowrose · 31/10/2006 18:09

bookends - yes totally agree about Meddow's boyfriend. He has no charisma at all. He does seem to have some morals which she doesn't seem to, remember the argument they had in bed over the guy who is gay ?

I love the way he depicts the mafia as the scum they really are, homophobes, pathological, perverts, thieves, murderers, etc.

I went to Sicily about 8 years ago (before the Sopranos)- it is the most amazing place. We went to Palermo, the capital. I wasn't even shocked that I saw these beautiful hotels with bullet holes in them !

I also crossed by car the bridge that had been blown up by a mafia gang (by remote control !) and rebuilt. The bomb killed a high ranking Italian judge who at the time was the no. one enemy of the mafia.
