Just read the blurb for this programme later tonight. Should make interesting viewing...

"One-off documentary following four pregnant women making very different choices about their births, including Jo from Leeds, who plans to deliver her baby alone on board her barge, and private patient Anna, who has booked in for a C-section at London's Portland Hospital. Lisa from Devon has decided to undergo a lotus birth, where the baby's umbilical cord is left attached until the placenta drops off naturally, while Kati from Manchester wants to turn the afterbirth into a smoothie to consume over a number of days. Each woman is going against convention to do it her own way. Will things go as planned?"

Placenta smoothie, anyone? Biscuit

I'm in a facebook group with the houseboat woman. She seems nice.

AppleYumYum · 24/02/2015 23:24

Yikes this is the most graphic footage of a c section I've seen!

meglet · 24/02/2015 23:32

carting a placenta round looks like a bloody faff.

HildaWazzo · 24/02/2015 23:34

No amount of berries is going to make that taste good!

SymphonyofShadows · 24/02/2015 23:34

Don't forget the Rose petals!

Smoothie woman is making me boak.

georgie22 · 24/02/2015 23:36

Glossy photo shoot 48 hours post birth! I was at home crying about my sore nipples!
Placenta smoothie woman looks a bit deranged!

AppleYumYum · 24/02/2015 23:37

That first home birth in the pool was lovely, just interesting watching the baby float for a moment.

Oh my gosh that Portland hair and make up photoshoot, ridiculous! Confused

cansu · 24/02/2015 23:37

Oh dear, all seem slightly bonkers. Loved the scene where Anna's mum was obviously baffled with her plans. Lotus birth woo was hilarious! must also be so stinky. Really think pregnancy can bring out weird shit from some people. Good telly though!

AppleYumYum · 24/02/2015 23:39

I missed the start, why does the lotus birth placenta get salted and sprinkled with stuff? Just to mask the smell or some other reason?

HildaWazzo · 24/02/2015 23:41

Salt to dry it out, the rest is to mask the stench of rotting meat Grin

SymphonyofShadows · 24/02/2015 23:43

Anna seemed a bit controlled. I wonder whose idea the photo shoot was?

ThatBloodyWoman · 24/02/2015 23:44

Ooo.I proper enjoyed that.
Fascinating to see how many different ideas there are.
I just did as I was told.Rather boringly,it appears!
The only unreasonable part of it was all the bullshit around the Portland birth with the hair and photographers.
No you didn't just have a bikini wax -it was major surgery.Tell your husband to stuff off.

Poor Anna trying to pose as the photographer wanted her to when she was clearly in pain.

I felt really sad for her.

meglet · 25/02/2015 00:05

I felt sorry for Anna too. She seemed lovely.

meglet · 25/02/2015 00:06

the cord prolapse was a very near miss.

ThatBloodyWoman · 25/02/2015 00:10

What I wondered with the free birthing,is what happens if you need stitches?

TurquoiseDress · 25/02/2015 00:12

I thought Anna was lovely- it was only a bit later the IVF story came out and really for her, having a ELCS felt the safest way.

Did feel sorry for her, the way her husband seemed to control everything. Wanting them to all fly to the States 10 post-birth WTF.

I found it so interesting hearing someone on TV talking about their reasons for maternal request CS.
It's the stuff you read threads on here, but you don't often have it presented like that.

As opposed to natural birth/water birth- you hear people taking about these all the time eg celebs in the magazines/papers etc

You never hear someone say- looking forward to my maternal request CS, do you?

HollyJollyDillydolly · 25/02/2015 10:13

Just watched this. I thought Anna's baby was beautiful. Was shocked at her dh expecting her to fly 10 days after the c section though.
The cord prolapse lady was incredibly lucky I think.
I bet the placenta eating woman didn't eat anymore placenta smoothie after that one for TV. I saw the barge free birthing lady also had a lotus birth but they didn't mention that bit.

toastandmarmiterocks · 25/02/2015 10:46

I'm confused, I thought free-birthing was illegal. But the boat lady seemed to be supported by her midwives in her decision to free-birth...

The lady with the cord prolapse was very very very lucky.

My heart went out to the Portland lady. What a horrible husband. Why does he need to take his wife & children away on a business trip? Is it really that important that he can't postpone? They have known about the baby's arrival for long enough. Poor woman and that silly photographer trying to get her to bend down 48 hours after major abdominal surgery! I did love her mum in the tea shop though.

ElleyBear13 · 25/02/2015 11:05

I think I've gone off homebirth (currently 14w+2) I also fancied placenta encapsulation, but now I'm unsure. They all seemed...interesting people.

Anna seemed lovely, and what a lovely outcome after the ivf :)

Lisa was very lucky too.

Good program!

TheEagle · 25/02/2015 14:07

Great telly. I loved the lotus birth woman's other children who were clearly thinking "wtf are you doing Mum?!"

I bawled at the C Section for some reason! Prob cause I was out cold for DS's birth and will be having a CS for my twins in about 9 weeks.

I hope the £15,000 covered the photoshoot Grin

MsRabble · 25/02/2015 15:06

I was glued to this and blubbed at the water birth, it was amazing to watch.
Never heard of a lotus birth before, no one really explained the benefits or thinking behind it though other than just because or why not - the thing that worries me is dropping the bag (that looked a bit like a door stop) and it yanking the baby along with it - horrifying!
I loved bonkers barge mum though, she was fab but YY to Nuts in May Grin
