Just read the blurb for this programme later tonight. Should make interesting viewing...

"One-off documentary following four pregnant women making very different choices about their births, including Jo from Leeds, who plans to deliver her baby alone on board her barge, and private patient Anna, who has booked in for a C-section at London's Portland Hospital. Lisa from Devon has decided to undergo a lotus birth, where the baby's umbilical cord is left attached until the placenta drops off naturally, while Kati from Manchester wants to turn the afterbirth into a smoothie to consume over a number of days. Each woman is going against convention to do it her own way. Will things go as planned?"

Placenta smoothie, anyone? Biscuit

Watched this (recorded) last night;

Barge lady, thought she was fab but did worry that something might go wrong. The ceremony seemed very odd but thats possibly because its alien to us me.

Posh lady, well you can't have it all,
Slim and pretty check
Big house check
Lovely toddler check
Lots of money check
Housekeeper check

Dh, dickhead i wonder what she saw in him

Also 46 flights in 18 months, poor baby thats cruel.

Homebirth lady, fab!!! I was boaking at placenta smoothie but if I had the cash would of had capsules made. buried mine under a plant pot

I really enjoyed it.Smile

Oh yes lotus birth lady. I don't get how a rotting organ that stinks can be good to leave attached to baby. Did she really say she hopes the next 3 births are as goo?Shock

gallicgirl · 27/02/2015 13:46

Yes, she did!

What I did find useful was the calm way they all put over their point to the HCPs.
It was all "this is what works for me".
I found it impressive that they could all say I've looked at the research, I understand your point of view but this is my choice.

MsRabble · 27/02/2015 14:03

I find it amazing they were all so adamant about their decisions and managed to stick to them with no wavering despite opposing views from health professionals, friends, family, etc., yet if it were me asking for a home birth for example, the midwife would tell me a million things to put me off and I'd say "oh ok then" and not be strong willed enough to pursue what I really wanted. I admire them for their convictions, despite what others might think (even though I don't agree with them all).

sosix · 27/02/2015 14:04

Good on them not just doing as they were told!

I though barge lady was very brave and honest in saying she had just a enough contact with nhs to stop her dcs being taken away. Power to us.

gallicgirl · 27/02/2015 14:06

I was very single-minded with my first baby. Home birth or nothing! Luckily there were no contra-indications otherwise I'm not so sure what I'd have done.

This time I'm a lot more laid back and open-minded. But I'll still have a home birth in a pool and will probably refuse induction unless there are strong risk indicators.

runningandjumping · 27/02/2015 14:07

For me, the placenta smoothie was the absolute highlight, it made me both laugh and cringe! Another anecdote about the British cuisine (I'm French), but better nor to tell it in a dinner party!

I absolutely hated the photo/beauty session for Anna, 48 hours after giving birth! She looked fab, but it puts pressure on us mere mortals to look good ahtever the circumstances! I found that this couple wanted to make sure that the birth happens as unnoticed as possible - just an unpleasant procedure to get through - so that they can go back to their normal looks, lifestyle etc.

sosix · 27/02/2015 14:07

Mrsrabble, one if the mw's I had for dd3 tried to scare me out of having a hb. im stubborn i had the best birth experience, like to think it was very similar to hb ladies. As far as pushing went, my body groaned twice and dd fell out. It was amazing.

I had ds1 after dd3 in hospital as had gd. It was ok but nothing like dd3's birth and I had to push. I was most put out.Grin

I would have loved a water birth with my last baby but due to heart reate dropping with each contraction, I wasn't able to. The water birth on this show was lovely

MsRabble · 27/02/2015 14:30

Sosix, I guess you have to be really sure of yourself if you go against the grain. Glad I'm not in the US or other countries, where epidural and CS is so prevalent or I'd have ended up with what I've have assumed was "normal". I was very lucky to have normal and natural births which were fantastic in their own right, despite restrictions - I wanted water births but was advised not to Hmm
Glad you had a happy and healthy HB!

Pinkfuzzmonkey · 07/03/2015 02:20

Hi, my home water birth featured in this show:-) it was interesting to see four women going about their birth in different ways. Mine was similar I guess to the lady who lived on the boat except I had a midwife with me but she was very hands off.PS the berries did totally disguise the taste and I ate it for 3 consecutive days in increasing amounts. I have written down my birth preparation tips here if anyone is interested? ( the smoothie eating isn't compulsory though lol) bit.ly/BirthPrep

Pinkfuzzmonkey · 08/03/2015 06:22

Just FYI, it was my home water birth that was featured In this programme. Yes, I made the smoothies but I also did everything I could to prepare for the birth and make sure I was as healthy as possible afterwards. I did a lot of research. I wanted to avoid intervention if at all possible. So I thought that by preparing well I would be stacking the odds in my favour of everything going well. Did this comes across?
Here is a free download link to my top tips if anyone is interested:

Watching Anna and her situation made me cringe. It all seemed so false and I'm sure she is very lonely and unhappy deep down. It just goes to show what's really important, and money, photoshoots, hairdressers and long haul flights certainly aren't.

Beesandbutterflies · 22/03/2015 10:12

Only just seen this, out of curiosity anyone know what the boat lady did with her placenta?
Mine's still in the freezer, I'm not into eating it (but do see the logic)

Beesandbutterflies · 22/03/2015 10:14

Pink fuzz congrats! Was curious you were on your back, did you plan to do that or just felt that's what your body needed? Smile

dashoflime · 22/03/2015 10:33

I watched this while waiting for my ELCS and (unsurprisingly!) had a lot of time for Anna's decision.
Watching the births- the lovely calm water birth was obviously the nicest experiance. But- the prolapsed cord woman looked really shaken up. Yet they made similar decisions. To me it shows how unpredictable childbirth is and that nothing you do can really guarantee the birth you want. I can completely understand Anna's decision to remove as much uncertainty from the process as possible- even at the cost of forgoing the "ideal" experiance.
Watching it on TV I couldnt see the problem with a trip to the states. Then 3 days after the birth I had a weird shivering fit in the car park at Aldi and 2 days after that a horrible fever from a blocked milk duct. So, I guess now I get what the problem would be! BlushGrin
