Welcome to the UK proper cherin. Does one hold parties or send cards for this kind of thing? Sounds like a good excuse for one doesn't it. You will probably now suddenly develop a strange affliction to your mouth overnight which is called the 'stiff upper lip' and also find your ability to complain about anything has evaporated and you will feel a strange compulsion to discuss the weather with anyone in paticular or use it as your opener for any discussion.

Seriously - though welcome!

Nickel45 · 20/02/2015 20:38

Congrats cherin, shame The Alex has changed (do you know the Alex?! on Park Road) else you could go down for a quick 'alf (my DH grew up round the corner from there!). Apparently that was his local!

Have missed you on here, but glad to know you are ok :)

pixieg1rl · 20/02/2015 20:39

How do you celebrate becoming British? A pint of real ale and a pork pie? Suddenly overcome with the desire to say 'mustn't grumble' as you complain about everything?

Welcome. No more taxation without representation.

Nickel45 · 20/02/2015 20:49

Fish and chips?

cherin · 20/02/2015 21:15

I have a very good chippy, locally, it's an excellent idea for tomorrow with my mum!! Today I just went to M&S and bought a collection of various sweet things, from Eccles cakes to Scottish shortbread just to represent various area, and give my colleagues an insulin spike :-)

Park Road? The Alex? Dunno! There's a Victoria stakes and a...oh gosh I drive past it every day and can't remember...not really a beer person am afraid. Don't drink beer, cant brew a cuppa properly, don't understand cricket, I don't know how I managed to fool them. Hope the home office doesn't read this or they'll retract their certificate :-)

Nickel45 · 20/02/2015 21:20

I think the Victoria Stakes is at the end of Park Road? The Alex was up that road, if you head for CEnd broadway, on the left. Think it's changed name now! I don't drink beer or tea, and have no clue about cricket (unto SPO told us the rules!) and I was born here!!!! Maybe you need to learn how to cook scones though?!!!

cherin · 20/02/2015 21:35

Well with the test I had to pass I learnt the number of members of the Scottish parliament, the different system of trials for youth offenders in Wales/England, that gardening is one of the most favourite hobbies of the country, and some hilarious says originated by cricket (promptly forgotten). :-)
I am not a great fan of scones (bit dry?) but I love English muffins and could live on porridge. Does that help?

apsara03 · 20/02/2015 22:07

Welcome cherin I think V few native born brits could pass the citizenship test.. Varieties of cake sounds a good way to celebrate .Cake

Nickel45 · 20/02/2015 22:08

Wow! I wouldn't be able to pass that test! I don't even know the members of the English parliament, and naming the PM would be a guess! You're more British than me :)

apsara03 · 20/02/2015 22:20

New SPO chapter -genius cjwoof you're in print Smile

cherin · 20/02/2015 22:24

Yes! She has the honour of CJ initials too ;-)

orphan · 20/02/2015 22:27

Back home finally after lovely day with friend and daughters.

Congrats cherin! What a ridiculous sounding test though, since as aspara says, very few native Brits could answer those questions. Far better would be an identification test of various cakes and puddings eg trifle, Victoria sponge, shortbread fingers etc.Grin

I've made my feelings clear previously about KA's guinea pig, but omg, a wet look guinea pig is even worse...

orphan · 20/02/2015 22:45

spo truly brilliant chapter. I think you must have actually been spying on CJwoof since the detail seems a little too authentic.Grin

Ilovelblue · 20/02/2015 22:45

Congratulations cherin. I've seen those nationality tests - a friend of mine is involved in them at a local council and they were hilarious. I wouldn't have a clue over most of the questions asked. I could do the cakes and puddings though orphan.

Just to confuse you though, bread is apparently very regional. A friend of mine lived in different areas of the country as a child and teenager due to her father's work and she said it was often baffling to go into a bakery to ask for a sandwich when they moved house. What I (in the north west) call a teacake has fruit in it and is toasted, but in Sheffield apparently, the teacake is a bread bun, which I in turn would call a barm cake!

Well done to cjwoof for appearing in SPO's latest. I was snorting into coffee as I read it.

Are you not coming back to us SPO? Can we not tempt you?

Ilovelblue · 20/02/2015 22:46

PS: Jen how was the wedding and did RL Chris fulfill his wish to get off with one of the bridesmaids?

orphan · 20/02/2015 22:58

Just one bridesmaid? Surely, a lothario of RL Chris' calibre should aim for a higher number?

Nickel45 · 20/02/2015 23:00

Brilliant, SPO, cjwoof will be so chuffed once she has recovered from her exhausting week and checks in here :). You do crack me up, and you do it so well!! I was laughing before I even started reading the story Wink. I might even leave a review. Maybe!

cherin · 20/02/2015 23:18

Yes, SPO is hilarious and he's balancing a triple cross-contamination, OG/zombie/western, plus MN antics!! He's too clever

Guinea pig: poor chap. The smell of damp wool is enough to make me gag (bad experience, believe me, never wash a sheepskin rug in the fall when radiators are still off. Yeugh. Enough said). Can't believe he's carrying that on his shoulders. Much better 30kg of Bergen!

cherin · 20/02/2015 23:24

(Talking about regional variations, my two grannies lived 20 miles apart but in their respective dialects the word "today" is said in Completely different way. A fairly believable theory about why Italians never won a war is that even after becoming a single country 150yrs ago they didn't have a single language and therefore in the army they simply could not understand each others :-) so...aye! Don't worry about naming bread types. There's worst ;-)

Onlygirljen · 21/02/2015 06:51

Morning. Case of the very sore head here Confused

Wedding was really good, beautiful day. RL Chris was on good form. No bridesmaids were touched as far as I know, but bride's family are English, and he disappeared on a mission to demonstrate to one of her relatives that he was a true Scotsman under his kilt....Didn't see much of him after that point, funnily enough!! Grin. I feel like this should play a part in the UK citizen test! Congrats cherin btw! Smile

It was a no kids wedding, which meant I drank more than I should have, and am now paying for it this morning - up with youngest since 6....I'm meant to be drinking again today, can't handle 2 days in a row anymore!

apsara03 · 21/02/2015 07:15

Glad you enjoyed the wedding onlygirl hope it was worth the suffering this morning. I'm a complete lightweight these days too . I think not being able to sleep it off and being generally sleep deprived us a big part of the problem.

On the regional variations for bread rolls I remember now being asked if I wanted a barmcake by my now sister in law and being disappointed to get a ham roll..

Richtea19 · 21/02/2015 07:23

Congrats cherin! Virtual bunting is out in a true Brit style for you. Great idea about the selection of cakes. I rather like cream and jam in a scone which makes them less dry. You will now have to queue for everything, we do love a queue!!

I haven't read SPOs latest hoping a cup of tea might be bought up to me and I can have a sneaky read. That woof obviously gets about ;)

jen glad the wedding went well, like you I'm nursing a sore head this morning. Why can't I say no! Stayed to late and had a few too many. Got to get up to take DS to cross country and its snowing... I can't imagine it's snowing in London.

cherin yes DS is quick, it will be a slower pace today because as you know Hampsted Heath is hilly.

Right gotta get out of my pit.

icemistOBE · 21/02/2015 07:31

morning
Now I know why a quick drink with hubby after work is never a good idea. Work today so hoping it's not too busy or complicated

Wish I had CJ looking after me today

I think the regional variations in baked goods is possibly too contentious to put in the citizenship test. I can remember the heated discussion about the names of a bread roll from uni.

Then there's questions about the order of toppings on scones, jam then cream or cream then jam?

Nickel45 · 21/02/2015 07:45

Morning :)
Always jam then lots of cream for me! Yum!
