Happy New Year tennis folks (and others of course, if there are any) :)

Getting very very excited to see Pot back in action, feel like a hyperactive child rather than a middle aged woman. He didn't make it to Brisbane so wasn't counting on Sydney but he's there. Look:

I forgot- it's Stefan's birthday! Well, it probably isn't now, in OzGrin

Juan I hope he comes back, and we haven't see the last of him. Would be really sad if he didn't play competitively again.

Mama1980 · 19/01/2015 15:43

Aw juan Hmm according to Eurosport people earlier potato is aiming to be back by the French if not before, I hope he can make it at least another year or two. Although as they also said his ranking is so low now it's not making it easy for him.
Unfortunately I think it is Djokovic or fed that have gotta be the favourites but I don't know Rafa looked good today (and not just very pretty in his nice new kit Wink) maybe......
I would love Stan if it can't be Rafa but i haven't been convinced by him since his win last year over Djokovic really.
Lots are saying fed but I saw his match this morning whilst stuck in hospital hell and don't think he was playing as well as the as usual biased commentators were saying , though as we all know I'm not his greatest fan so it could be wishful thinking Smile

JuanPotatoTwo · 19/01/2015 16:59

Oh thank you for the sympathy :) I know he's talking about coming back but I figure if surgery, access to the best medical personnel and a year off tour haven't fixed it then nothing will. I would love to be proved wrong though.

Yes Rafa looking particularly fetching I thought :) I too would like Stan to do well but can't see it. Would like Djok to take the title but as long as Nishikori doesn't win I don't mind too much. Would like to see Coric do well too.

Read earlier that Kim's engagement ring is worth £200k Shock. No idea if that's true but even if I had money to burn I can't conceive of spending that much on a ring.

Emoticon overload, sorry.

Trenzalore · 19/01/2015 17:00

Ahem!

Looking through last thread theres a lot of Andy other players- Haters out there, so why cant the couple of notRafa people get a word in?

No ones trying to derail the thread, but surely we are all entitled to our opinions?

OneInAMillionYou · 19/01/2015 19:51

Exactly, Trenzalore. Plus what we said was mild compared to what is out there, just google Nadal and Doping and see what comes up.
Anyway, my reference to 'cheating' referred to his breaking the rules of the sport, and his judicious and timely use of the MTO when it suits.
Even if his only transgressions were the on court coaching and time violations, which his devoted fans prefer to overlook, then that is sufficient to accurately describe him as a cheat.
This thread is dominated by Rafans, I don't object to that, but there is room for more than one opinion.
As to today's play, I thought the two young Aussies did great and fired up the home crowd. I am always super envious of friends and colleagues in Melbourne who can buy tickets ON THE DAY for most courts.
Dimitrov looked sharp, as did Fed, who seemed slimmer and leaner than this time last year.
Stan and Djoker tonight. Two weeks of disruption to the body clock coming up!
Juan Potato, SO sorry about Delpo. He is adorable and doesn't deserve his bad luck with REAL injuries...

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/01/2015 20:04

Glad you've remembered you have Eurosport this time Raahh. Although you'll be breaking the Grand Slam tradition of suddenly realising you have it and that you've missed the first week.

Lost a few seeded players by the looks of things, particularly from the womens. Have my fingers crossed for Heather tonight. Hoping she can get through to the second round.

MrsVamos · 19/01/2015 20:15

I don't have Eurosport. Sad.

I'm following online the old fashioned way. Hmm

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/01/2015 20:19

Me too MrsV. Sad Just live scores for me.

Or not so live since I have to work this week.

amigababy · 19/01/2015 20:45

Radio 5 live extra when I can, or waking up to catch up with the overnight results. Wish it was at least on Sky.

Fingers crossed for Heather Watson tonight.

MrsVamos · 19/01/2015 20:47

Yup, RL just so busy as well. Sad

I live in hope Murray may get to the quarters & beyond and we might stand a chance of a match on the BBC !

How sad am I ?

Actually, don't answer that !

amigababy · 19/01/2015 20:49

not at all. dh we watch so much football in our house, I love it when tennis starts and I can take over the remote for a while.

JuanPotatoTwo · 19/01/2015 20:54

I don't have Eurosport either, and TennisTv aren't showing this. It's so frustrating.

Now then, I vote that we all must be lovely to each other :). We do all have different opinions and different favourites, but it's so nice to all rub along together. I had a nasty habit a while back of calling Berdych "Birdshit" (him not being a favourite of mine), and got pulled up on it. Rightly I think. Doesn't mean we can't say we don't like players or don't want particular ones to win.

There are Rafa fans on thread, but there are fans of loads of other players too - and I don't think the Rafa fans are any more vocal than the rest of us. I can't imagine, for instance, that anyone is as ridiculously prejudiced towards a player than I am to Pot. Frankly, he could nick all his opponents racquets and I would still make excuses for him :)

Raahh · 19/01/2015 20:55

Now you're making me feel badSadGrin I only have a bog standard Virgin package with Freeview - and i swear things appear and disappear from it. I spend a lot of the year flexing my refresh finger on the ATP website.

or using a rather dodgy website that dh sets up online and I feign ignorance

OneInAMillionYou · 19/01/2015 20:57

Juan, do you remember when Delpo, for some reason, was down to his last two racquets? I recall thinking that he might sneak into the locker room and help himself!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/01/2015 21:00

I think magi would disagree on your last 2 sentences, Juan, but she's not here so I won't tell her.

MrsV, I can't think why real life doesn't stop for tennis. It should at least stop for the slams.

MrsVamos · 19/01/2015 21:03

LOL, Raahh.

In my area we have a box that we get Freesat through, as with Freeview we can only get the 20 or so original channels. We apparently either need to get Sky.or Virgin or a.n.other to get channels.

I am really wrestling with my conscience about whether to get Sky as a package when our phone/bb package is up for renewal. But by then I can watch RG on ITV4...

I really don't think I want to give my hard-earned to Murdoch.

Aarrgghh !

Juan

Yes miss.

Wink
amigababy · 19/01/2015 21:03

life improved vastly when I left 1 job and created 2 days a week off, lots of lovely tennis watching, live or recorded ( and driving home with radio off so as not to spoil the excitement)

MrsVamos · 19/01/2015 21:08

Rafa

If I time it right and sort RL out, I can usually let it 'stop' for RG and Wimby.

I'm usually glued to tv and here, as well you know !

This is the thing. If I had the means to watch more tennis, I'd have no RL.

Probably the DH and DCs would leave too. Grin

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/01/2015 21:27

Better off not staying up to refresh the Aussie scores if I'm honest. It'll take me forever to sort my sleep patterns out again.

I can see a light at the end of the bed crisis tunnel though, so might be tempted to take a days AL for the final, depending on who gets there.

Raahh · 19/01/2015 22:14

I've just read that Li Na, who has retired since winning last year, is pregnant. Congratulations to her! Thanks

JuanPotatoTwo · 19/01/2015 22:24

I didn't mean to be bossy, was just a plea for harmony

Million - yes, I do remember :) They were the last two racquets from the bunch (is that what you call a load of racquets?!) he had when he won the US Open. Wonder if they're still going.

Clay - muddled would have to agree - only one of us set their alarm for 3.30am twice last week to watch Pot. And it wasn't her Grin. Where've you been - haven't seen you around lately?

That's lovely news about Li Na. Have you seen pics of Fed's babies? They're cute!

magimedi · 19/01/2015 23:12

I can't imagine, for instance, that anyone is as ridiculously prejudiced towards a player than I am to Pot.

Swords at dawn, Pesky. swords at dawn.

May I just say I don't have the advantage of TV that El Pesky Juan has so no point in moi setting moi's alarm at 3.30 am to watch re-runs of come dine with me (which is prolly all I'd get).

Poor Pot.

Interesting that Laura Robson had her wrist op done by the same guy as El Pot & she is still not back..........

Should have left Pot to the tender (!!!) mercies of moi & Pesky. He'd have been a lot better by now!! (If he could have cooped!)

waithorse · 20/01/2015 07:00

Poor Watson. Sad Makes it worse, that she's been playing so well recently. Sad

Raahh · 20/01/2015 07:10

walt it is a shame- maybe last week took took too much out of her.

And Thiem is out too Sad
