The DC are going away with their Dad for about 9 days over Christmas. Now obviously this would be an ideal time to devote myself to deep-cleaning and decluttering the house, so I need you to save me from that by recommending something fascinating to watch instead. Grin

I like strong female leads, dry and cynical humour, maybe a bit of action and intrigue, quirky characters and a fanciable man or two. Series that I have enjoyed in the past are Buffy, Firefly, Castle, West Wing, Veronica Mars, Northern Exposure and NCIS.

TIA

Suits! I've just devoured seasons one and two on Netflix and I'm now bereft as season 3 isn't available. Sad

Gabriel Macht is sooooooo sexy in it. It's a bit daft at first but it's gripping once you get into it. Quirky. I like it. Smile

TimeWarp · 03/12/2014 20:06

Suits is good, I've already seen seasons 1 and 2 though.

House MD - Hugh Laurie is perfect as the drug addled bitter but wonderful doctor (& q surprisingly sexy too!)

LeBearPolar · 03/12/2014 20:09

The first thing I thought of was Bones: strong female lead and some humour as well as David Boreanaz...

LeBearPolar · 03/12/2014 20:11

Ooh and definitely Agents of Shield. Joss Whedon input and Agent Melinda May is absolutely kick-ass.

TimeWarp · 03/12/2014 20:12

I've seen all of House, it's good but not compelling, I probably wouldn't be able for too many episodes in a row.

I love Bones, and have seen all of it, I think, but not in the right order.

Battlestar Galactica? Lots of good female characters and plenty of action and intrigue.

CoffeeandNumbers · 03/12/2014 20:53

Me and dh demolished two seasons of house of cards whilst on holidays. (We have a small one so back in hotel by 8/9 every night, we don't go on hols to watch tv!)
It's really really good!! I don't know how to describe it, maybe thick of it crossed with Macbeth?! You've said you like the west wing, so if US politics is your bag deffo try it. Also VEEP is very funny.

TimeWarp · 03/12/2014 21:04

I didn't like Battlestar Galactica, I found the whole conversations with people inside the heads of the characters to be a bit too freaky, and I never quite got the hang of who was who (face blindness problem possibly). And that actress who looks pained all the time irritated me too much. She's also on the new Hawaii Five O, with exactly the same pained expression, I think it's meant to convey emotional depth but it looks more like trapped wind to me.

It's odd that I was so bothered by the internal dialogues thing, because a very similar thing happens on Farscape and I loved that.

I would definitely add to the recomends for The Good Wife. It's one of those where I am jealous of people who haven't watched it yet.

Also for strong female lead + dry humour I would recommend Veep.

Dexter as mentioned upthread is v addictive. I had to space the seasons out though as they are quite samey. And I eventually gave up around half way through season 5 or something. Prison Break is similarly good at first but gets a bit sillier much sooner.

Feeling jealous!

There are so many recommendations, I'm almost starting to wish it was a little longer trip now.

Looking at your list of what you have liked in the past, I think True blood could be a good choice.

The good wife and damages are excellent.

If you don't mind subtitles "the killing" and "the bridge" are both gripping and have strong female leads. Not much humour tbh!

irishe · 03/12/2014 21:36

Oh and Homeland is brilliant. I am currently taping most recent series on TV and cannot wait to watch it.

TimeWarp · 03/12/2014 22:11

I hadn't thought of Homeland, Damien Lewis is very watchable in other things. Especially when he leans in, speaks quietly and then smiles that slow smile. Smile

The Good Wife - Strong Female
Weeds - Quirky Characters
White Collar - Matt Bomer

HatieKokpins · 04/12/2014 14:36

The Good Wife, and Chuck. God, I love Chuck. Chuck is brilliant (and on Netflix).

LeBearPolar · 04/12/2014 19:29

How mindless are you prepared to go for fanciable men?

Because no-one's mentioned Supernatural yet...

The plot requires you to suspend all disbelief all the time but you do get to gaze at Jensen Ackles... And it goes on FOREVER - Season 10 and counting! What's a girl to do? Grin

Jensen does have remarkable cheekbones, and a lovely jawline. But I've seen a few episodes of Supernatural and I don't think it's for me.

Has anyone seen the American Queer as Folk? I liked the original, but if the American is exactly the same story then it's probably not worth it. On the other hand, there are attractive men kissing other attractive men, mmm!

GrouchyKiwi · 04/12/2014 19:50

Definitely The Good Wife. Alicia Florrick is amazing.

I hated The Newsroom. As a die-hard West Wing fan that makes me sad.

LeBearPolar · 04/12/2014 19:52

Ooh - ooh! Elementary! Johnny Lee Miller AND Lucy Liu AND the whole Sherlock thing! My sister recommended it to me and I really wasn't sure because I am a huge fan of the Cumberbatch Sherlock. But Elementary is excellent.

BertieBotts · 04/12/2014 19:58

Fringe is absolutely brilliant. Really really good. Looking at the list of requirements and what you've liked before I think you'd love it. It has gory scenes but it's so worth it. I get face blindness on series too but it's not an issue with this because the characters are so well defined they don't bleed into one. I'm rewatching it right now and it's just as good the second time around.

Also I recently watched Orphan Black and loved it almost if not just as much. Brilliant series(es).

I wasn't keen on the idea of Supernatural but got suckered into Sam and Dean gazing...

TimeWarp · 04/12/2014 20:40

I've Googled Fringe and it has Joshua Jackson in it! JOSHUA JACKSON! Are plot lines also really necessary?

LeBearPolar · 04/12/2014 20:43

Well, if we'd known that was all you wanted, Dawson's Creek! Grin

Deckmyballs · 04/12/2014 20:47

Breaking bad

Prison break
