Anyone else given up on finding a decent radio station?

I've just given up yet again on trying to listen to the radio. All the non-digital channels are just sh*te. I've been at a loss since going on maternity leave, and no longer having access to Radio 6 on my PC at work.

Am I too fussy?

  1. Can't abide local commercial radio stations, all those appalling ads and DJs that sound like imbeciles
  2. Have some kind of problem with every single Radio 2 DJ during the week (Steve Wright being the epitome of this affliction)
  3. Radio 4 far too worthy (post-Today), dramas too often lame, so-called 'comedy' shows dire (apart from the old classics), 'Veg Talk' FFS what is THAT all about?! etc.
  4. Radio 1 playlist too repetitive
  5. Radio 3 too much opera and things with a volume level that veers wildly between whispering and deafening
  6. BBC Local radio - does ANYone listen to these stations??

So that leaves me (since I don't live in a major city) with sh*te-all to listen to. I would tune into Radio 6 via cable, but I can't stand having the TV turned on.

Just realised that I sound like a ranty old woman.

Get yourself a digital radio loomer - or are you skint as well as ranty
I love evening Radio 2 but quite agree that Jeremy Vine followed by Steve "all material is copyright" FFS Wright is enough to drive anyone mad

trinityrhino · 26/09/2006 15:53

I haven't yet got sick of radio 4, can't stand radio one though

gosh that makes me feel old

expatinscotland · 26/09/2006 15:53

Freeview offers digital radio.

That's what I listen to.

HumphreysCorner · 26/09/2006 16:17

Lincs FM is the best ever

loomer · 26/09/2006 16:26

Marina, that's a brilliant idea (and fairly obvious really, can't think why it didn't occur to me before). That'll be top of the christmas list I think.

Humphrey's, I've always wanted to live in Lincolnshire - now I have the perfect excuse to move!

Smooth FM is wonderful - old skool soul, Mowtown classics etc - proper songs with proper tunes/melodies and artists who can actually sing. When the ads come on, I tune out. I also enjoy Classic FM and Magic.

speedymama · 26/09/2006 16:30

Motown -doh!

CheesyFeet · 26/09/2006 16:40

HumphreysCorner - dh loves Lincs FM, they play all the cheesy 80's stuff he likes

tigi · 26/09/2006 18:01

i like chris evans on radio 2 at night. and isometimes like the (not political, or sport related) discussions on Radio 5

cece · 26/09/2006 18:15

London Live.

southeastastra · 26/09/2006 18:36

chris evans on radio 2 is pretty awful, but stuart maconie, jon ross etc are great, london live is brill

NotQuiteCockney · 26/09/2006 21:37

Gaydar. Very cheerful, lots of bouncy tunes, not a lot of adverts (nobody wants to advertise?). Ok, the news is a bit ... focussed, but it's a good station.

Only available in London and Brighton though.

Twinkie1 · 26/09/2006 21:39

Vere between Radio 1 (as love Chris Moyles) and Classic FM.

Blondilocks · 26/09/2006 21:39

I find that it is necessary to flick through a variety of channels & cds to find a constant unannoying mix of entertainment.

On the way to work I generally flick between 4 local stations & 1 national plus cds.

donnie · 26/09/2006 21:40

I say go back to Radio 4 - it is fab IMO.

seb1 · 26/09/2006 21:42

I am listening to magic at the moment

Blondilocks · 26/09/2006 21:46

I couldn't listen to Radio 4 ... their voices are just so soft & quiet it'd put me to sleep :S

loomer · 26/09/2006 22:08

Classic FM could be alright but also has a very repetitive playlist. Radio 4 does hit the right spot a lot of the time, but it also winds me up no end - 'You and Yours', 'Gardeners Question Time', 'The Food Programme', and in particular 'Quote Unquote'... just no end of smug middle class self congratulation (well, perhaps the gardeners less so).

I'm intrigued by London Live - did that used to be GLR? I loved GLR when I used to live in London. I could even stomach Vanessa Feltz when I didn't have to look at her shiny face.

What on earth is Magic? That's a terrible name, it reminds me of Paul Daniels!

Don't even get me started on Chris Moyles, but agree with southeastastra about Stuart Maconie - we need more Maconie on the radio!

mummymic · 26/09/2006 22:15

radio 1 for me ladies - just love chris moyles...sooooo funny x

smoggie · 26/09/2006 22:17

5-live for me.
Good mix of discussion, news, sport.
Occasionally a bit too much sport, but I tend to flick to Radio 2 (as long as Steve W not on!!) or local if they're covering say golf/cricket etc.

ilovecaboose · 26/09/2006 22:19

DAB radio was the best present me and dp ever got

Radio 7 is brilliant - comedy (old and newish) and drama.

love it.

curlew · 26/09/2006 22:47

I listen to 5 til 9.00, then 4 til one (unless it's really dull, then I go to 7) then 5 again til 4 when I alternate between 4 and 5 until 6.30, then it's classic fm during all the bath/bedtime stuff. Then 4 again until 10, then 5. If any of these get dull for a while or if I'm fed up of talk, I have 1, Classic FM or our local, Invicta.
I'm a radio addict!

Thomcat · 26/09/2006 22:53

LBC - Nick Ferrari -on the way to work
Radio 2 throughout the day but enjoy Steve Wright mainly and enjoy Jeremy Vine in tht order.
Way home it's either a bit of Scott Mills on Radio 1 or a bit of BBC London.

bea · 27/09/2006 10:18

radio 4 for comedies/womans hour/the archers/the odd topical progs...

radio 2 for jonathon ross and saturday l;istening as there is a whole load of acceptable comedy shows after jonathan...

but mostly 5 Live... it's ace for discussion and it's not all sport all the time....i can usually listen to the sport without feeling too sportified!...

deffo try 5 live...

failing that.... pick and choose from the LIsten Again archive on the BBC Radio website..

frankiemum · 28/09/2006 09:29
