Child Genius (C4)

Anyone planning to watch this?

I was a little like these children; joined Mensa as a child, but used my ability to coast through school/university rather than to achieve anything noteworthy.

DS2 is also of this ilk. We are not doing any of the things these parents are doing, although when opportunities arise through school then obviously we let him participate.

Eleanor's words seemed much easier than the rest - or is it just me?

SlightlyJadedJack · 03/08/2014 21:27

Sophie is very normal, quite refreshing!

chesterberry · 03/08/2014 21:33

Oh bless her. This whole thing just leaves me the ethics of Mensa for putting on this competition - all of the children seem under enormous pressure, whether they're under it from their parents or themselves.

17leftfeet · 03/08/2014 21:34

Jack I thought that

If it was going to be fair they should all have the same words

chesterberry · 03/08/2014 21:46

The sudden death round seems a bit unfair seeing as, for example, Sophie's combined points from that round were 2 and Tudor's 10. Especially as they will, presumably, all have different questions.

TheFirstOfHerName · 03/08/2014 21:47

I think Rubiyat might win (or possibly Sharon).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2014 21:48

Are they given the general knowledge questions in advance? It seems amazing that Tudors mum taught him the answer (sadly wrongly)

IScreamForIceCream · 03/08/2014 21:54

Sophie is lovely! Am sure she will do well, whether she becomes a dancer, a genius, or anything else.

TheFirstOfHerName · 03/08/2014 22:01

Cuneyd's presentation about his AS made me feel a bit emotional.

Very sad to see the episode was in memory of Sophie's father :( Agree that she will do well whatever she chooses to do and will make her whole family proud.

Picturesinthefirelight · 03/08/2014 22:01

I hope that what Cunard just said helps my dd

fatballerina · 03/08/2014 22:02

Sophies father passed away after filming?

Notcontent · 03/08/2014 22:03

So now I am crying - I think dd may have mild AS so this really strikes home...

Also, poor Sophie... And her mum...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2014 22:04

Sophie :( poor love.
She was great.

Salemthecat · 03/08/2014 22:04

Cenyd has melted my heart. What a lovely, intelligent, insightful young man. His mum seems able to help him with his academia and also to try and encourage him socially which a lot of the other parents seem to miss out on.

Eleanor is lovely as well. She reminds me of me a little - not that I am genius but in the way that my emotional maturity was much younger than my intelligence which resulted in a lot of teats and confusion.

Tudor's parents make me so angry. The look of fear on his face is so upsetting.

fatballerina · 03/08/2014 22:04

My dd is 5 and diagnosed ASD at 3-I think Cueyd is 1 of the bravest young men I've ever seen-spreading awareness-I hope my dd will be confident enough and happy in her own skin at his age.

TheFirstOfHerName · 03/08/2014 22:10

When he meets someone for the first time, DS2 introduces himself with his name and then his diagnosis. Shock Hopefully he won't still be doing this by his mid-teens, but he sees it as a positive part of his identity, and thinks that other people might find it interesting. His second sentence is usually "Do you like Minecraft?" He says that because he's attempting to find common ground.

I've just realised that my last comment probably outs me, at least to anyone who has ever met DS2. Oh well.

I love all these children! They are making me very weepy and emotional.

Picturesinthefirelight · 03/08/2014 22:15

Poor poor Sophie.

microcosmia · 03/08/2014 22:26

Poor Tudor!

Sophie is lovely and so is her mum. So sorry to hear about her dad RIP.

And Ceneyd (sp) is fantastic his parents should be proud they seem very grounded too

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2014 22:32

Dd was rather like Eleanor in primary school, very prone to collapsing in tears due to the pressure she put on herself. In secondary her emotional maturity has caught up and her resilience has really allowed her to flourish.

Aeroflotgirl · 03/08/2014 23:05

which one is Sophie?

ouryve · 03/08/2014 23:27

Sophie's the little blonde girl.

It's a pretty common obsession, TFOHN. DS1 doesn't do introductions, but once he's sussed you out is likely to with er quiz you about the coins you have on you or bore delight you with endless factoids about coins.

ouryve · 03/08/2014 23:28

No idea where that "with er" came from!
