Breaking Bad advice needed (contains spoilers s2)

I'm not sure if I should continue watching.

I've heard really great things, but I'm not sure if its the programme for me. I watched series 1 and thought it was good, but not amazing. It was a bit too violent for me and I didn't like the moral dilemmas of the killings. I thought that was quite awful.

I'm on s2 ep7. The ex girlfriend came to visit the family and Walter was so awful to her and the Jessie in the druggies house with the cash machine bit and that poor child. I'm a bit bored of all the lies and the character he's becoming. If I haven't been amazed this far should I jut stop watching it, or just start series 3 and try and catch up or just stop and watch something else instead.

Did anyone else feel his way and grow to love it, or I'd you love it from the start?

WowserBowser · 22/06/2014 21:36

I didn't love it from the start.

But the violence didn't bother me. I ended up loving it but it doesn't get an easier watch. They become worse if anything.

GemmaTeller · 22/06/2014 21:41

Stick with it

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 22/06/2014 21:45

I felt similarly to you and stuck with it til some point in series 4 then realised I just wasn't interested any more and stopped watching.

Paisleychick · 22/06/2014 21:55

It got such rave reviews, maybe ill get to the end of this series and then decide. It's on Netflix so I'm not buying box sets or anything

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 22/06/2014 21:59

I could see that it was very well acted etc., but I'm not keen on anti-heroes, I need someone I can root for :)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/06/2014 16:39

That's the whole point-you start off liking characters then hating them, then liking them again. It throws up all sorts of moral dilemmas and gets REALLY good very soon so stick with it.

I didn't find it that violent tbh.

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 24/06/2014 16:49

I know that's the point, and some people like it, which is why it gets rave reviews. I don't like watching films/tv where I hate the main characters, and I don't want to be manipulated into liking them again.

Georgethesecond · 24/06/2014 16:52

I didn't find it that violent??!!
What about the throat slitting??

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 24/06/2014 16:54

Spoilers George, OP is only on series 2.

Yama · 24/06/2014 16:56

We are about halfway through series 3. We stopped for the football.

Anyway, series 3 is better than series 2 - although there is one episode about a fly which is self absorbed nonsense. I would recommend you skip that episode.

We'll struggle on no doubt but it ain't all that.

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 24/06/2014 16:59

It is pretty bloody violent IMO. But funny too, and I loved how your opinion of the characters changed over the whole series. Also love the relationship between Jesse and Walt.

Georgethesecond · 24/06/2014 17:11

That's why I didn't go into detail!
But it's seriously bloody, surely?

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 24/06/2014 17:20

Fair enough Grin I just wanted to catch you in case you said anything else. Yep, definitely bloody. Though I'm not sure anything beats dissolving bodies in a bath of acid then having to mop it all up when it crashes through the floor...

WeAreEternal · 24/06/2014 17:22

I was the same.
I watched season 1, I thought it was good but not great. By the end of the second series I could take it or leave it, I wasn't excited to watch more but since everyone seems to rave about it I persisted hoping it would get better.
By the end of the third series I was bored, I only watched the rest of it because I loved the Jessie character.

I found the Walt character really hard to like and I just couldn't relate to him at all, the same with a few of the other characters such as his wife and her sister.

It was a good show, well acted and an original story but I really don't understand why people rave about it so much.
I honestly don't think it would have been half as good without the actor who played Jessie though.

TulipOHare · 24/06/2014 17:36

That episode with the poor little child in the house with the meth heads was awful. Definitely the hardest one to watch for me Sad and still plays on my mind, because even though it's fiction, that actually does go on, all the time...it's the thought that that is real life for some children Sad

Anyway.

I think if you don't like the show at this point, you probably won't like the rest. I loved it; even the afore-mentioned episode, which was horrifying and sad, I found gripping and well done and blackly humorous. And I adore Walt's character arc. But by this point it's laid out its wares pretty comprehensively, so, you know, maybe it's not for you Smile

minlillehus · 24/06/2014 17:40

maybe it isn't for you!

I think game of thrones is nonsense. I loved BB though.

wintertimeisfun · 24/06/2014 18:36

best thing i have ever seen. still miss it. the episode with the druggies & their neglected child still hangs heavily on my mind. seriously good thought provocing stuff all be it somewhat violent at times

Shesaysso · 24/06/2014 18:44

I would say if you don't love it by now you never will so would maybe pack it in. For whats its worth I loved it and was gutted when I had finished it but I was completely hooked by the stage you're at now.

waterducksback · 24/06/2014 22:01

Stick with it, it gets better again (except The Fly episode, which was really boring).
I also didn't like any episodes where it was 'Skyler heavy' - Was there EVER a more annoying character? Don't know what Ted saw in her!

waterducksback · 24/06/2014 22:02

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but, for those that LOVED BB, what would you recommend watching next?

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 24/06/2014 22:05

I found season 2 bloody depressing and I'd have given up on it if dh hadn't loved it... Series 3 is better, series 4 is great and season 5 is fantastic. One of the best things I've seen on TV - and I don't like excessive violence either. It does calm down in terms if gore but the characters are flawed all the way through...

waterducksback · 24/06/2014 22:08

Anybody? What to watch next? I have BB withdrawal symptoms.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/06/2014 23:47

Nurse Jackie?

I'm assuming you've seen The Sopranos?

Fargo?

Tbh nothing compares to BBSad

It's not really about the characters as such, it's about America and how a civilised country doesn't have affordable health care. It's about who was responsible for Walt's breaking bad-Elliott and Gretchen? Greed? Lack of health care? Oooo it throws up so many questions,Dh and I still discuss it endlessly even now. I didn't think anything could equal The Sopranos.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/06/2014 23:48

Game of Thrones is awful imoGrin

Paisleychick · 25/06/2014 07:41

Thanks all. Lol, looks like you guys are split 50/50. I do love Jesse, I think he's great. And the Hank. I like him too. Might keep watching just for them.
