From the few interviews I have seen from Rafa this year, he seems to be putting his 'not playing as well as everyone thinks he should' down to getting older, having to work that bit harder, as fit as he is.

I'm sure it must get harder as time goes by, especially if you have had an injury, and don't play as well as you or others think/know you can. I think there are a few sportsmen who go against the grain, Roger is an example, David Ferrer possibly another, who seem to improve with age, and manage to keep playing at top level.

I do worry for some of the young pups coming through, behind the likes of Rafa and Novak, it is so much more than just hitting a ball nowadays, I watch with mouth agape sometimes, as I don't think we really have a clue just how hard it is to hit a ball back over the net from some of the players !

I wonder how the level of fitness can be maintained, and how hard it is on all their bodies.

I love tennis, and am in awe of them all.

Juan Grin

Clearly, yellow is a BAD colour !

The young Robby playing Rafa was wearing neon yellow socks earlier, that must have been why he lost.

I was more offended that he was wearing them with RED trainers. Yuck !

The wear and tear on their bodies must be phenomenal, how they keep playing into their thirties is astonishing to me also. It's not just a case of overall cardiovascular fitness but also almost every muscle group in their bodies comes under such pressure. Then they have to throw mental strength into the mix on top of all that. The players who keep on grinding away at challenger and futures level must get so dispirited sometimes - hats off to them for sticking at it. I do get that it's 'only tennis' and not, say, brain surgery but I defy anyone to say it's an easy option.

threebats · 26/05/2014 21:48

The stress on their bodies has got to be phenomenal... There it goes, kicking in from the adrenal glands then carrying on long term and sustained - you've no idea the harm it can do the the body physically, the mind psychologically, the actual results of long term stress from workload where it is mental is bad enough but throw in physical as well??
I listened in my Anatomy and Physiology classes - oh yes I did....

That's why they all have massages :) Massage is sooo good for your mind, body and spirit - I can totally ease their stresses and strains, totally - I can make them all well again, I don't mind at all offering myself up for services of this nature - I am going to need a few bag carriers though, you know, portable massage couch, oils, towels, that sort of thing - any takers??

MrsVamos · 26/05/2014 21:52

Bagsie me be your assistant and give Rafa a good ol' rub down ! Grin

Can't imagine what they go through, it's hard enough watching !

Honestly, I am filled with admiration for all players.

JuanPotatoTwo · 26/05/2014 21:53

I signed up before you qualified, remember? That means you have to take me actually into the massage room, not just leave me hanging around outside clutching an armful of towels Grin

MrsVamos · 26/05/2014 21:56

Ah, but Juan they could be the players dirty, wet, sweaty towels.

Imagine the smells ! Grin

OP posts:
JuanPotatoTwo · 26/05/2014 22:03

Sweaty towels = good. Access to real life sweaty bodies = even better Grin

JuanPotatoTwo · 26/05/2014 22:04

But actually, I'm a woman of simple tastes - give me permission to lay hands on Pot and you can have the whole of the rest of the ATP :)

MrsVamos · 26/05/2014 22:09

I only want Rafa, you have a deal ! Grin

OP posts:
JuanPotatoTwo · 26/05/2014 22:34

That's sorted then. All we have to do now is get Rafa and Pot on board :)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 26/05/2014 22:35

Tut I leave you lot alone for a day and you're rubbing down sweaty tennis players and fighting over sweaty towels. Grin

Tennis Tennis

threebats · 27/05/2014 08:51

You're all hired! We'll be ace and yes Juan I did recall promising you the job waaaay back last year so you can be my very personal assistant, you know, the sort that has to be in the actual room with me assisting these poor chaps in getting their kits off and getting up on a couch... We will have to carefully inspect bodies for any form of stress or strain then talk about it all while they lay there and we go, 'So, tell me Sir, where is the pain......?' We are fortunate that our tastes are very diverse - there's one for us all! Well, aside from muddled and pesky who will have to fight it out - that'll be fun :) I shall bring popcorn...

Taking son into college today - yep, in the half term, so I will be back and Tennis will be on sharpish!

magimedi · 27/05/2014 09:50

I would win - no problemo!

I reckon that Pesky is a lightweight!!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/05/2014 10:29

Tough talking there magi. Fighting talk.

I was quite happily assuming that if ITV were showing the tennis, then it would be on their catch up service so I could actually watch some of it. Just gone to catch up with some of yesterday's or Sunday's and it isn't there. No tennis at all. Sad

You wouldn't get this with the BBC.

magimedi · 27/05/2014 11:09

I'm well 'ard, me!

Looking forward to seeing Gael a bit later. Tennis

threebats · 27/05/2014 11:16

What? I'm here Magi - you mean you are coming over????? Shock I have not even brushed my hair or hoovered the floor....

Is Eurosport online? Because I am barred from my living room thanks to A level revision so am in kitchen with my old faithful laptop and Ivtplayer....

threebats · 27/05/2014 11:18

Ahhh, lol - My name is Gayle - that ^^ was the joke - which nobody got, cause nobody knew my name....

Raahh · 27/05/2014 11:23

Right- Ferrer is up soon (only the dcs have rebelled and taken over the tv).

Dimitrov is already playing- has lost the first set. Murray up later secretly hoping for a loss so that Inverdale will shut the fuck up .

Think Gasquet and Tomic- if Tomic is in a good mood Grin might be a tight one. OR it could be a total white washGrin.

Heather Watson has started strongly - go Heather!

Tennis
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/05/2014 11:27

Was just coming on to say about Heather. Looked like an easyish first set. Was a break up in the 2nd but looks like it's back on serve now.

Go Heather!

Raahh · 27/05/2014 11:46

Dimitrov is 2 sets down. That's not good.

Heather serving for the match...

Raahh · 27/05/2014 11:49

Well done Heather! Grin

Mama1980 · 27/05/2014 12:21
