Rebecca Adlington - medical grounds?

LalaDipsey · 25/11/2013 20:27

Does anyone have any idea why she keeps being excluded from the challenges due to 'medical grounds' ?

I thought Asthma and Claustrophobia? Seems a bit weird she went into the jungle and wouldn't be allowed to do a lot of the trials.

ithaka · 26/11/2013 07:25

It does seem a bit bonkers that a fit, young Olympic athlete keeps being excused trials, when David & Mo can do them - they are in their 60s & in far from peak condition.

It has put me off her, to be honest. I am not sure what the point is of her being in there, there has been hardly a trial she could do.

And when she did have to do a hanging on a gymball thing, she came off right away. I would have thought a professional swimmer would have had really strong arms & legs, but Alfonso the actors & singers did better than her.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 26/11/2013 07:28

Medical reasons aside, RA is a total princess.

Even dd who is 10 (and went to her welcome-home-to-Mansfield thingy after Beijing when RA was her heroine) was Hmm after she won her bronze medal and went on to whinge for weeks about how swimming is the hardest sport in the world (Jess Ennis may beg to differ) and how the adulation of the public had put her under too much pressure.

If I try to be fair about her, (which I admit to finding difficult) I'd say she was too young to be thrust into that level of spotlight. She found she liked it, sadly can't cut the mustard in the baths anymore, so will sell her soul for another 15 minutes. I think she is badly advised tbh.

And even though Frankie Boyle is a twat, she did herself no favours by insisting on a public apology or whatever she did. Again, badly advised.

themonsteratemyspacebar · 26/11/2013 07:34

She apparently has chlostrophobia which would offset her asthma and give her panic attacks. Dont watch the show, but seems pointless for her to be on there if the show is made up of tasks?

ExcuseTypos · 26/11/2013 07:53

Do you think there should be a ban on all asthmatics appearing? The programmers knew she was going on and should have made the tasks suitable for an asthmatic.

It's hardly her fault they've designed tasks which could bring on an asma attack.

ExcuseTypos · 26/11/2013 07:53

Asthma attack

GideonKipper · 26/11/2013 09:16

ExcuseTypos - well, come on! Rebecca Adlington will have seen the show before - there are always trials that revolve around being in confined spaces, and stressful situations. It would change the whole show and be a bit tedious if all the trials were chowing down testicles and bumholes.

I'm surprised she was passed as medically fit to participate if she wasn't able to manage a lot of the things involved.

She is not going to do well out of this.

ExcuseTypos · 26/11/2013 11:35

But that's not her fault. The producers know she will be excused from X number of trials, they still asked her to continue doing the show. She didn't say 2 minutes before the show started 'oh I've got asthma, I can't do the trails'

This person has a chronic medical condition. If you don't like people being excused from trials don't blame them, blame the producers for letting her take part.

I feel sorry for her that people can be so nasty towards her because she has a medical condition.

GideonKipper · 26/11/2013 12:25

Confused I haven't been nasty about her.

I've expressed surprise that the producers have passed her as being medically fit to do the job for which she's been signed up and paid a large sum of money. The job being too appear on a television programme and partake in scary, gross and stressful trials if the public so wish.

I also think in her shoes I would have seriously questioned whether it was the job for me in the first place.

coffeeinbed · 26/11/2013 12:27

It's a mad mad thing that an athlete like her can feel her body inadequate next to a model.

Ubik1 · 26/11/2013 12:30

It's like getting out of games at school, isn't it.

HappyGoLuckyGirl · 26/11/2013 12:51

I just don't like her. Which came as a surprise.

She's very whiney and extremely princessy, IMO.

And the whole getting ridiculously upset over the conversation with Amy re. beauty.

It's not Amy's fault that she's prettier than you. And for Layla (sp?) to then go to Rebecca and say "you are beautiful and a much better person than her" was just Shock and Angry

She moans about how she is judged on her appearance and yet she has done exactly the same thing to Amy and out of spite because of her personal insecurities.

I don't like her.

I feel a bit sorry for her. She's a superb athlete in a sport which requires extreme youth as well as talent and endeavour, so she's finished and still in her mid-20s. What does she do now? She seems to be being advised by people who are trying to position her as a celebrity telly type, a job for which she appears to be spectacularly ill-suited - not least because she struggles so much with the inevitable focus on her looks.

I think that taking someone who has achieved so much at the highest level in one thing and putting them into a situation where they are going to fail is cruel. She needs to have a re-think about what would work for her for the rest of her life.

Get Rebecca out! If she can't do the trials then get her the hell out of the jungle! What is the point of her?

girliefriend · 26/11/2013 19:14

Shock my first ever deletion!!!

bitemabum · 26/11/2013 19:18

Congrats! Care to give us a MN friendly version 'cos I missed the original.

HesterShaw · 26/11/2013 19:22

I wish for Adlington's sake she had never agreed to go on this awful programme. People are foul enough about her as it is.

The fact that she, a multiple Olympic medallist was reduced to tears about her looks on national television is profoundly depressing :(. What kind of shitty world is this?

Bad decision, Rebecca.

LittleNoona · 26/11/2013 19:24

Pregnant? Possibly why she's so emotional?

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2013 19:26

I agree with carabos - she is a very dedicated athlete and someone to be admired for her stamina and dedication as without it she would not have won a gold medal in 2008, in 2012 she swam faster than in 2008 and that I think was the real downer. To have got a pb in the following olympics and not get gold was a shock to her.

i think whoever she has managing her is not very good to have put her in this type of position when she clearly can't handle it as people are obsessed with looks - which in turn makes her obsessed with looks

bitemabum · 26/11/2013 19:33

I couldn't give a rats ass about looks but while watching the jungle I do at the very least expect the "celebs" to do the trials.

girliefriend · 26/11/2013 19:35

Well the other poster above me who got deleted made a very rude comment about her appearance and I told her it was horrible.

Suppose I got deleted because I replied to her.

Do I belong to some secret underground mumsnet club now? Wink

bigTillyMint · 26/11/2013 19:36

I thought she might be pregnant.

Crutchlow35 · 26/11/2013 19:38

I have just posted on the I'm a celeb thread. I find the criticism of her unfair. If you look back at previous series, many celebs have been ruled out on medical grounds.

Biggins just about all of them
Kim woodburn x 4
George Hamilton, Sinnita, Freddy Star, Gillian McKeith were all multiple exclusions as was Janice Dickinson.

She is being picked on because she is an Olympian. If she shouldn't be there then loads of the previous contestants.
