Downton Abbey Finale

Well, it was very obvious that Green was going to die. I still don't think that Bates did it though I think that we are meant to think that he did. I guess details of his death will be revealed in the Christmas special or in the next series! I don't like the way Bates tested Anna in the boot room to confirm that he had the right man.

Team Blake here. He's better suited to Mary and he has spirit. Gillingham comes across as love sick.

The scene with Mrs Patmore and Daisy was very touching. Silly Alfred, he needs his head checked.

Kudos to Mosely for standing up to Thomas.

Violet's face when Isobel received the flowers was priceless.

It will be interesting to see how Edith's pregnancy plot line develops.

I am getting withdrawal symptons already!

Clobbered · 12/11/2013 13:48

Was it just me that found that last episode a bit of a let-down? Nothing seemed to be resolved at all, just masses of loose ends.
Going off Bates rapidly - even if he gets away with it, or didn't do it, I think his relationship with Anna has been poisoned.
I don't get the connection between Thomas and the new ladies maid - have I missed something? What is his hold over her?

boogiewoogie · 12/11/2013 14:00

I agree it's very sad that Anna and Bates seem to have lost trust in each other.

Thomas knows something about the Lady's maid past as she was given the job in Downton without a reference but under Thomas' recommendation. I think all shall be revealed in the next series! It is annoying that there are all these loose endings.

Mosely and the Lady's Maid to marry!

I had assumed she was as bad as Thomas but can now see she's being blackmailed by him. Good old Mosely taking her under his wing!

hopskipandthump · 12/11/2013 14:17

Molesley not Mosely - that makes him sound like a Blackshirt!

boogiewoogie · 12/11/2013 14:19

Molesley! Grr

OP posts:
Animation · 12/11/2013 14:20

Oh RIGHT. What is the Lady's maid called?

Onesleeptillwembley · 12/11/2013 14:22

They've left loose ends to tie up in the Christmas special. I think Edith's chap comes back with conveniently dead wife and a very rushed wedding takes place. Bates didn't do it, but Anna will not believe him, they'll split up. Mary will have lots of 'will she won't she' moments, but nothing resolved. Isobel will be courting the new bloke, possibly another Christmas wedding.

hopskipandthump · 12/11/2013 14:31

Ladies maid is Baxter I think

I think that the Xmas Special 'aaahhh' moment will be Daisy and Alfred getting together. Hurrah!

And Mary will reject both suitors so that there can be an exciting new suitor in the next series.

And someone will report Bates to the police - Lady Mary? Blake? Anna even? but he'll turn out to be innocent. Whatever he's been up to in York will be something very honourable and decent the silly old fool should just tell people and not be mysterious

Oh, and Edith will marry the tenant farmer bloke so she can bring up her baby. Or the document she signed for her missing bloke will make her an independent woman of means - a rich version of Aunt Rosamund so she can keep the baby in some manner and have an interesting life.

And Rose? Is Ross too good for her?

phantomnamechanger · 12/11/2013 19:46

Here's my theories, for what they are worth....

Baxter & Molesley to wed! somehow Thomas to be revealed as a Nasty one and got rid of.

ediths baby - we have had 2 newborn babies lose a parent - maybe this time the baby dies during birth Shock (happy Christmas everyone!)

Green was done in by Lord Gillingham, his boss, due to him thinking this would be a huge favour to Mary who wanted him got rid of for doing something dreadful

sad that Bates and Anna have been set up to suspect each other - where was Anna in London when Mary was having tea and getting Green sacked?

Mary to marry mud wrestling pig expert

Isabel definitely to marry new chap (mary's godfather) - or there will be a battle for her affections between new man and Doctor

flowers - wonder if Violet did get the lesser posy, or if she in fact swapped the cards to set Isobel up with new man?

Re: going UP to London - on the railways, you always go "up" to the more important station. It has nothing to do with North/South.

can't wait for the christmas special

boogiewoogie · 12/11/2013 22:07

No Animation. Sorry, the Grr wasn't aimed at you.I realise that I had made that mistake too in my OP. Lady's maid is Baxter. Why do all the Lady's maid begin with a B?

gaelicsheep · 12/11/2013 22:13

Does anyone else think that Michael has duped Edith and run off? Not sure how or why, but that whole document thing was very suspicious.

boogiewoogie · 12/11/2013 22:17

I think that he may have made her sign something dodgy and left abruptly never to be heard or seen again by Edith.

love triangle with the doctor, Mary's godfather and Isobel

Thomas cannot leave. we need his scheming.

campion · 13/11/2013 02:01

In Yorkshire you go down to London. Period.

And parenting was not a word in 1922. Nor did village school teachers own big shiny cars. Also, does baby George only have one outfit or is he always dressed the same so that Mary may perhaps recognise him?

Mere quibbles. What am I going to do on Sunday evenings now? ( I always record it and watch Mon or Tues actually, but you get my drift...)

gaelicsheep · 13/11/2013 02:30

Hmm, not sure about that. My grandparents and great aunt were Yorkshire through and through, and they always talked about going "up" to London.

Jaynebxl · 13/11/2013 07:29

I'm a Yorkshire lass and you definitely go up to London. You go up to the bigger town. Or to uni.

Misspixietrix · 13/11/2013 07:37

"Mary to Marry mud wrestling Pig Expert" Grin Re EdithI thonk he's done a flit too. Can't wait for the Christmas Special. Think the reason there were that many loose ends is so they had something to tie up at Christmas.

hopskipandthump · 13/11/2013 09:49

Another Yorkshire dweller here. I most certainly go 'down' to London. Perhaps it's a mental attitude Grin

Housemum · 13/11/2013 10:32

Thought it was a bit of a damp squib for a finale - I know Christmas will be the big one but I expected to have some feeling of "I can't wait" rather than "oh well time for a brew".

Edith's man was pretty wet (and it took me a couple of episodes to remember this was a different man not a new actor being Robert Bathurst's character!) - maybe he has become indoctrinated into the Nazi party? He'll despise her and her bastard child. Or some dodgy financial fraud and she'll be lumbered with his baby and his debts. Happy days...

(And can Lady Mary please stop with the languid sighs)

campion · 13/11/2013 12:11

You're obviously a bit posh,Jaynebxl but Ivy isn't and she wouldn't have said 'up'. She just wouldn't.

By the way, is Cora completely dense not to have sussed Edith's Grand Tour ruse? She's already a daughter down so you'd think she'd cherish the remaining ones ( though I realise that Mary's a bit of a challenge there).

Has keeping her head tilted for so long led to brain slippage?

CeliaFate · 13/11/2013 13:34

Violet knows about Edith's baby. She didn't seem very scandalised, did she? I thought it was quite out of character.
Green should have been confronted, then had a fatal accident. We didn't get to see his comeuppance, it was all done too quickly.
Bates I think did kill him, but won't be suspected and he'll get away with it. Except Anna will find out and then it'll all end in tears.

nennypops · 13/11/2013 13:58

Maybe it was Anna who killed Green. After all, she was the one in London and at a loose end while Mary met Gillingham.

Bakingnovice · 13/11/2013 14:10

Yes it was a damp squib. Bates has become totally dislikeable, miserable Mary is suddenly the Angevins Joliet if her time, dowager is dour and daisy is still 15. Really miss the old days of downton. The plot lines are disjointed and too fast.

Bakingnovice · 13/11/2013 14:10

Angevins?? Who the fuck is she? I meant angelina jolie.
