Commenting because you think something is supposed to have a double meaning , isn't the same as understanding it. dd laughs because she thinks it is probably crude (or because we are sniggering) but couldn't explain why.

letzygonsbezyons · 16/12/2013 18:51

not going to mention it any more. I started this thread,my fault for being too hyped up for it and have been disappointed by it. too much loving HH and expected the same type of thing.

like I said (and I hope I dont sound rude) I know my child and what she 'gets' and doesn't 'get'.

just onemore episode to go and only watching it as im recording it for someone. otherwise I wouldtn have bothered after the 1st episode realy.

enjoy!

CalamityKate · 16/12/2013 20:41

Zygons - no offence meant!

Like Lizs said, there's "getting" jokes - as in realising something IS a joke but not being sure why (which by the sounds of it is where your DD is at, as is my son - "why do they keep on about videos? What did Pete think she meant?? I don't get it!") and then there's truly understanding WHY something is funny, in the same way we do.

My son isn't familiar with home made porn and I'd guess your DD isn't either! :)

letzygonsbezyons · 18/12/2013 17:17

no, no porn here! just very sexually and otherwise aware due to medical condition (DC, not me!).
Thanks ,Calamity.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 22/12/2013 20:02

glad that's over now! had its funny moments but just not our cuppa tea!

Didn't think last episode was as funny as it might have been although liked the puppet joke. Wasn't sure overall whether it was trying to be funny, witty , crude , incisive or just plain nonsense !

LetZygonsbeZygons · 23/12/2013 17:00

Agree, LIZS what was it? it was aimed as being a family show but how old the kiddies? just because there were a few puppets?

I did like the way they hid Larrys double when Larry was the wizard they hid the guy in his cavalier costume out of headshot or behind someone, and vice-versa!

and how many times in the series did Simon whip out his butt?

I MISS HORRIBLE HISTORIES Sad!
they showed some today on CBBC (even though weve got all the dvds)and they were brilliant.

savage songs plus a couple of other episodes. Sad.

LIZS · 29/12/2013 18:23

yes we watched some of that today. Mat Much wittier too.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 29/12/2013 18:33

LIZS TMI alert. I always get a 'meg Ryan' when Mat does that wink and lip biting on the 4 Georges song!!!Wink

I deleted all episodes of Yonderland from the TiVo box. Watched two and found it very meh. It didn't do anything for me or DD. Although we only watched 2, couldn't be bothered with more and it was taking up
Room I need for Death Comes to Pemberley and Meet Me in St Louis!

LetZygonsbeZygons · 31/12/2013 17:05

only endured it cos id promised someone id tape it for them!

wont be watching again if they do a 2nd series unless they make up their minds who exactly its aimed for.

OP posts:
guineapiglet · 31/12/2013 17:21

Thanks for enduring it Zygons - it sounds like it has been a bit hit and miss, but we are really looking forward to your tape and will report back!!

Strangely, we were all watching HH series 5 today ( sob!) - brilliant stuff.... maybe they will all come out of retirement if Gove has his way with the History Curriculum!

Happy New Year one and all!

LetZygonsbeZygons · 31/12/2013 18:13

well, apart from the taping I wanted to see how it would pan out Grin.

yy lets hope HH will be back. heard they were putting a compilation of the WW1 sketches for a special next year.

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 01/01/2014 22:28

Well, i finally watched it! My parents had sky-recorded it for me and I watched it all when i visited over Christmas.

Personally - I really enjoyed it. A lot. Not as funny as Horrible Histories but the format was very different. If i said it had any faults then it would be that having a new adventure each week might have been too ambitious - the pacing was rushed. Maybe it would have been better if there was the more traditional route of having a stronger story arc that took the whole series to resolve.

Personally (really sorry here) I would still count this as a family show and I genuinely don't think it was confused as to where it was being pitched. I'm actually really surprised that there has been such opinion here that it's unsuitable for children. Yeah, ok - i wouldn't let a 4 year old watch it but i would be absolutely happy for a child age 7 or older to watch it. There were some adult jokes but having adult jokes in a kids film is something that's been going on for decades - all kids films have jokes for the grown ups that the kids don't get. I mean, that's a cliche in itself. I heard far far far ruder things last time I went to a panto!

And the bottoms... Having seen them in context now i don't think they were a joke too far. As the jokes involving nudity weren't 'saucy' in content - i actually found them innocent really, not really any different to the fart/ snot jokes in HH in terms of being innocent yet cheeky jokes. Almost traditional. If the context had been different - if there were saucy connotations - then yeah, i'd say it was inappropriate. But a very brief flash of some bare bottoms? Bit of a non-issue in the main, as far as I'm concerned.

Catsycat · 05/01/2014 21:35

I just watched 2 episodes on YouTube (2 and 4? 1 and 3 weren't on there!). I really enjoyed it, and DH liked it too - thought it was a bit Mighty Boosh-esque in parts. I wouldn't have a problem with my DDs (6, 4 and 19 mos) watching it, and will probably buy the DVD. I didn't find the adult jokes off colour (have probably said worse myself in front of the DC!!!), though I appreciate that others didn't like that aspect. Like Mean said above, I still think it was a family show.

Oh, and I can report that Simon's bum did not disappoint at all.... though it was a bit of a weird moment, as DH was sitting on the sofa going "you got to see an arse!"...

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 05/01/2014 22:44

We all gave a little cheer when Simon's elder finally managed to cast off his cumbersome robes - really made us giggle.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 07/01/2014 17:48

CBBC showing HH from series one on sundays at 6.20. hope they go through the whole lot!

"That's Warty Wendy - she was born like that" Grin

DD1 is most upset it isn't on before school any more.

Not that my love of HH is known... as well as 2 (my parents can't operate an Amazon wish list, it seems :) ) copies of the series 1-5 DVD for Christmas, DH also did me a memory stick of the series 1-3 songs, and has prepared a 100 page book of the song lyrics. He really is marvellous Grin!

I let DD1 and DD2 watch an ep of Yonderland yesterday. DD2 wasn't bothered (she didn't get the jokes), but DD1 liked it. She asked me if Mat didn't know how to kiss in real life - I told her he probably had it covered... :)

Catsycat · 07/01/2014 21:13

... Just watching the 4 Georges again, and to be honest, if Mat's skill in the area mentioned above needs testing, I'm happy to assist. In the interests of science and everything. Grin
