She won't tell bates because she's worried bates will kill him and then be hanged. Esp after all that caboodle with his ex wife.

Bates will think its a much wanted baby.
Anna will have to try to keep quiet.
If Mary has romance will Gillingham, expect to see more of his valet.

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:24

Agree Chub the juxtaposition of pleasure on the faces of the listeners with the awfulness of Anna's attack.

I'm with others feeling rather shaken.

There was time to switch off I think as a consequence of the warning, but I was expecting someone to hear her I think so I didn't.

She's more concerned Bates will kill him and his history will see him hang, no exonerating circumstances rather than simply not telling him.

DelphiSwimsLate · 06/10/2013 22:24

I know Northern, it is too much!

FreyaFridays · 06/10/2013 22:25

Surely Bates will see that these are not the sort of injuries you get from simply falling down?

phantomnamechanger · 06/10/2013 22:25

I didn't want that. I wanted gentle sunday night TV, Christmas day was bad enough but that episode was just Sad I really thought God, all those poor rape victims watching this just like me for cosy TV, what a shock to them.

NK5BM3 · 06/10/2013 22:27

I can't sleep now. I was tired before I went to watch it and now I'm so angry/upset/shaken I can't sleep.

And I've got a really busy day at work tomorrow! Shock

DelphiSwimsLate · 06/10/2013 22:28

I do think bates will suspect there's more to it.

I'm quite shaken too. It's all too real for the poor victims out there, it does make you think of the people it's really happened to :(

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:28

Freya that makes it worse-fear of premeditated actions to keep us all at a heightened state of blood pressure.

I have a plot for Christmas forming in my head already.

Bloody JFK, we've dissed the past two weeks then he unleashes this lot and tees us up for another ruined Christmas Day.

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:29

Not JFK no one can come up with this from the grave.

DuchessFanny · 06/10/2013 22:30

Too much for me, I also missed the warning at the beginning so it came as a shock !
Excellent acting, but I really don't want this for my favourite, gentle Sunday night drama !
I kept waiting for someone to hear her and run to her rescue, but they didn't, just awful [ sad ]

GeorginaWorsley · 06/10/2013 22:30

It was shocking in truest sense of word.
But felt like Downton back to its dramatic self after two 'quiet' episodes.

Northernlurker · 06/10/2013 22:30

It is at least absolutely consistent with Anna's character NOT to tell though. She's very strong and sensible. It will make sense to her to carry this herself - she knows it will break Bates' heart to know what happened and that he did not protect her from it, leaving aside the risk of him attacking the evil valet. SO she will carry it all herself and protect him. Remember Anna knew all about Mr Pamuk and helped carry the body. she's a coper but I think this could be too much even for her Sad

FreyaFridays · 06/10/2013 22:30

What, you mean the warning makes it worse?

Surely it would be far worse if they weren't to give any warning at all? That would have been truly awful of ITV.

DelphiSwimsLate · 06/10/2013 22:33

Duchess I think that's what's shaken me up - that she probably hoped someone would hear and come and no one did. I know it's not real but I suppose I'm thinking of when it is real iyswim.

NK5BM3 · 06/10/2013 22:35

Did you guys catch the teaser for next week? When Anna tells Bates that working together and living together is getting too much? They aren't going to break up are they? And then she finds out she's pg. and the bloody valet is constantly there because his boss is chasing Mary??? Shock

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:40

Sorry I didn't mean the warning made it worse. I was responding to your Bates point and that a reaction from him based on evidence/suspicion would be worse.

Nessalina · 06/10/2013 22:42

I think it's very brave that cosy old Downton can pull off something as dark as that so effectively. Quite terrifying to think just what it would have been like for victims of rape in those days - I expect Anna's reaction of shame and secrecy was probably the norm. Poor thing. She's right though, Bates would kill him if he knew!!
Forgot he was Mary's love interest's valet, thought we'd be rid of him after tonite but there's going to be lots more stressful tension to come!! Confused

Chubfuddler · 06/10/2013 22:43

The teaser always makes things look slightly different from how they actually play out though. Last eked made it look as if downton was about to be transformed into a gambling den

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:43

Northern you make good points. Many people owe Anna, many of whom will be outraged enough to protect her/wreak revenge. Interesting.

IcedTeaOneSugar · 06/10/2013 22:45

Lady Mary would get rid of him.

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:45

I'm watching it again on ITV2. Isobel had some fabulous lines tonight, acted sublimely and the dialogue and empathy between her and Violet is beautifully done.

Chubfuddler · 06/10/2013 22:45

Was his conviction for murdering beta actually quashed? Or did he get clemency?

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:50

I recall the neighbour was pressed by Mary's super rich fiancé to tell the truth. Hence conviction quashed.

I had a crush on the evil fiancé.
