Good episode overall,despite subject matter.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 06/10/2013 22:07

Surely Anna could have told on him, he beat her up. Oh poor poor Anna.

sophieandbrendantowinstrictly · 06/10/2013 22:08

Right just confirm for me who did that to Anna...

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2013 22:09

Gillinghams valet (bloke that used to be in Stenders)

Chubfuddler · 06/10/2013 22:09

Gillinghams valet

Gregson made card cheat give him twatty's IOU and the others for the games he'd won

GeorginaWorsley · 06/10/2013 22:09

Read interview in magazine with a new lady's maid so either Anna or Edna goes...
Hope it's that scheming hussy!!

MadameGazelleIsMyMum · 06/10/2013 22:09

Yeah he have back the other players what they had lost due to card-shark skulduggery. To make him look son-in-law material.

runes · 06/10/2013 22:10

Ffs. I watch Downton to escape to a gentlemanly Poirotesque era of loyal housemaids and the obscenely rich upperclasses. I can accept Christie style poisoning and strangulation, but there is no place for violent rape

Mama1980 · 06/10/2013 22:10

Oh I so didn't want to watch that. I want nice gentle entertainment Confused

MadBusLady · 06/10/2013 22:10

So if Tom's whisky was drugged, that's two rapes? Shock

FreyaFridays · 06/10/2013 22:11

I suppose we were all warned at the start, we knew something was coming... Her screaming through the empty corridor was awful though.

MadameGazelleIsMyMum · 06/10/2013 22:13

Didn't hear the warning - what was it?

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 06/10/2013 22:13

I don't think Tom will have sex with Edna, I think she's drugged his whiskey to trick him.

DelphiSwimsLate · 06/10/2013 22:13

I see, thanks guys.
Really uncomfortable episode and agree about the screaming :(

StillaNortherner · 06/10/2013 22:14

They warned that it could be distressing viewing before it started

Oblique27 · 06/10/2013 22:14

Quite right runes and Mama1980 , there was a warning at the start of the programme but very unspecific......unhappy

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 06/10/2013 22:16

I agree Freya the screams were harrowing. It made me think of many others who would have been in her situation...

Anna wouldn't want to tell Bates, the shame of it (in that society), I think he may find out accidentally but she won't tell him.

FreyaFridays · 06/10/2013 22:16

Well, of course they're not going to be explicit, people would take it for a "spoiler" if they said there was going to specifically be a rape in the programme.

MamaMary · 06/10/2013 22:17

I'm quite upset by that too. Suddenly got way darker.

MamaMary · 06/10/2013 22:18

She didn't tell Bates because she felt guilty for flirting with him beforehand :(

FreyaFridays · 06/10/2013 22:18

I agree, it was the screaming that made me think of other women, and men, who've gone through that horror. Really, it was quite effectively done, having just the audio. Very chilling.

Chubfuddler · 06/10/2013 22:19

Screaming mixed in with the aria very clever from a production POV but rather horrible.

I've never been raped thank god but I actually feel rather shaken and shocked by that. I've no idea why.

Northernlurker · 06/10/2013 22:19

Poor Anna - was terrible. What if she is pregnant and desperation drives her to a backstreet abortion? Bloody Julian Fellows. We endured Sybil fitting to deatha nd Matthew crashing headlong not to mention William expiring in the best bedroom five minutes after marrying the drippy Daisy. Must we now endure this?

MadBusLady · 06/10/2013 22:19

It was very well done. Very chilling.

Lua · 06/10/2013 22:21

I agree, very shaken.

I don't think is that she is shamed, she said it: she knows Bates will kill him, and she doesn't want to go everything again.
