Or am I just an old gimmer with a period drama fetish Wink

OP posts:
Chubfuddler · 30/09/2013 12:45

They will. After poor little baby George snuffs it in WWII

TSSDNCOP · 30/09/2013 13:27

I think the money discussion is crucial because being Mary's, if she meets and marries will that person inherit if she dies? The fortune hunters will be out in force soon, Twattys going to do his best to lose his own share and that's without Isobel getting all upset about Mary looking at other men

TSSDNCOP · 30/09/2013 13:28

And Chub we already have Edith Mitford in Berlin to head off that plot fail Angry

diddl · 30/09/2013 13:44

I'm not sure that a new husband would inherit in favour of George, who is heir to the estate-but maybe a new husband would inherit any personal money?

But in general, a woman's property became her husband's, didn't it?-which I assume is why properties like this were entailed through the male line?

TSSDNCOP · 30/09/2013 13:53

But Matthew owned half the estate, that's what he's bequeathed to Mary.

diddl · 30/09/2013 14:12

Yes, but even if it became her husband's property, he couldn't sell it?

But maybe that isn't the case anymore.

Which makes me wonder why she has suitors still?

Are they hoping that Robert will pop off & they can be pretendy Lord G until George is old enough?

Rhubarbgarden · 30/09/2013 14:19

Anna is clearly in for it this series. Thomas and Braithwaite are going to keep making trouble for her, Rose is going to fall in love with servant-boy-dancer-rogue and Anna will get the blame for aiding and abetting. Cora and Lord Twatty will want to sack her but Mary will save her at the 11th hour by admitting she gave permission for her to chaperone Rose to the dance. There you go.

diddl · 30/09/2013 14:33

So if Gregson is a "bad egg"-will Edith realise in time, & if so, will Anthony Strallan be in the picture again, or do we think that that storyline is done?

I want a happy ending for Edith, then as far as I'm concerned, Robert can gamble away DA, & let that be an end to it!

eddiemairswife · 30/09/2013 14:35

How old is Anna meant to be? She could become pregnant, and I suppose she would be expected to give up her job. I think Carson and Mrs. Hughes would make a lovely couple. The servants are much more interesting than the family, apart from the 2 look-alike footmen.

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2013 14:42

Anna must be about 33. About the same age as Mary I suppose. It's ten years since the story started and Anna was 1st housemaid and informal lady's maid to the daughters, she wasn't new to service then.

BeCool · 30/09/2013 15:56

I'm just so annoyed that the tosser Lord Crawley still has any part of it.

He squandered away with his poor judgement and stupidity, not only his inheritance DA estate, but his wifes fortune/inheritance which was his to spend as he pleased. He was only saved by lady-what-her-name's fathers death that left sillybig money to Matthew.

And yet he STILL thinks he's the best person to be in charge.#
ahem

how much money/wealth can one person expect to squander in their lifetime - even if he is a 'LORD'??

diddl · 30/09/2013 16:12

"how much money/wealth can one person expect to squander in their lifetime "

As much as they can lay their hands on?Grin

Not sure why JF is making him into such a twat tbh.

It was only a few months ago that he was telling ShrimpyHmm how lucky they were to have Matthew & his ideas-saving them all!

Plus Robert had to marry Cora didn't he as his own father had left the estate practically bankrupt!

And Mary was all "you have to give Papa the money (from Mr Swire) to save DA)-so she might not be much more use!

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2013 16:31

Twatty is becoming more and more of a pompous ass. I'm not sure it's deliberate. He was much more enlightened (for an Edwardian earl) in early episodes - expressing concern about the passengers in steerage on the titanic, saying it was his duty to provide work for the servants and tenants, stuff like that.

ppeatfruit · 30/09/2013 18:12

Yeah Chub that trailer showing him gambling is just stupid, surely JF's got a bit more intelligence?

ZZZenagain · 30/09/2013 22:09

why is Isobel so involved in the life of a man she didn't know before whereas she has no problem with Mosely being out on his ear? Mosely used to work for her. Seems odd. That whole story was a non-event, wasn't it?

Rose is deranged.

eddiemairswife · 30/09/2013 22:48

I wonder if Rose will get into drugs. I believe cocaine was very popular among the upper class during the 1920s; even among royalty.

diddl · 01/10/2013 08:04

Moseley worked for Matthew, though?

Surely it would be up to the Granthams to sort something out for him?

And how many more times is she going to get turned away from seeing her GS??Sad

ppeatfruit · 01/10/2013 09:36

IIWM I'd be in there to see my GS regardless wouldn't you diddl? You're right about Mosley but wasn't he valet to Mathew before the marriage (although he wasn't wanted by Matt then was he?)

That new bitchy ladies' maid is sooo transparently evil she should have black hair with a white stripe and long claw-like red fingernails, it's becoming a cartoon. The SWs are on cocaine IMO eddie

diddl · 01/10/2013 12:32

Yes, seems really odd that it's inconvenient to see her GS-it's not as if it's even Mary blocking her-but "staff"Shock

Yes, Moseley was Matthew's valet at Crawley House(?)

Was he again at DA?

Who looked after Lord G when Bates was in prison?

And why do I always think that Isobel lives at Grantham House??

I luffs Isobel!

Chubfuddler · 01/10/2013 12:35

Thomas was valet while bates was in prison.

ZZZenagain · 01/10/2013 13:17

Can't stand Isobel, she has no sense of humour, understandable after her ds' death of course but she didn't have a sense of humour beforehand either.

Jimmy would be in a good position to start blackmailing Rose now come to think of it. Hope he doesn't let slip to dear old Barrow or the fat is in fire. What do you think he is brewing up with this Miss Braithwaite?

boogiewoogie · 01/10/2013 13:39

There will certainly be trouble for the Bates couple in the form of another valet going by the preview.

I don't think that Jimmy will reciprocate Ivy's affections. He's leading her on because he knows he can. I reckon he'll break her heart at some point and Alfred will come in as her knight in shining armour. I think Jimmy and Rose will have more interaction during this series now that he knows her secret.

Mary and Branson will not get together. She has suitors of her calibre lined up in the forthcoming episodes.

Poor Edith, something isn't quite right about her current love interest.

Davros · 01/10/2013 14:51

The new Radio Times says that a visiting valet (played by Nigel Harman) causes trouble between Mr and Mrs Bates

Clawdy · 01/10/2013 15:04

The Moseley story is sad and worrying, can't believe Isobel didn't want to help him. Hope it's not building up to a suicide storyline.

Chubfuddler · 01/10/2013 15:08

I think that's pretty much where it's heading
