Or am I just an old gimmer with a period drama fetish Wink

OP posts:
GeorginaWorsley · 29/09/2013 22:04

I tell you I don't care what you lot think.
I love it!Grin

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 29/09/2013 22:05

There's no character I just unequivocally like, since Sybil died.

Edith's all right. And Branson. And the babies?

Chubfuddler · 29/09/2013 22:05

Is Anna about to be plunged into a love triangle? I wouldn't want to make bates jealous.

Chubfuddler · 29/09/2013 22:06

I love it. I love Anna and I love Mary and granny. And mrs Hughes.

I quite love pickle (can we go back to calling him pickle please?) and I adored Matthew and actually cried when he died.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 29/09/2013 22:07

I didn't like Sybill, particularly.

Anna and Bates are alright.

And I do like Thomas, for some reason.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 29/09/2013 22:09

Nooooo remember when Matthew used to try to be sexy? Thank god we're spared that!

We really need to go back to calling Hugh Bonneville Lord 6!

FriskyHenderson · 29/09/2013 22:10

I can't tell the two footmen apart so that's completely lost on me.

What's this with the Griggs guy? I keep waiting for the big clunking plot to go bang, is it really just a distraction sub-plot? Does JF do subtle?

Chubfuddler · 29/09/2013 22:10

I like Thomas. I don't think he's actually all that bad. He does nasty stuff when he's bored basically.

Chubfuddler · 29/09/2013 22:11

Matthew didn't have to try to be sexy.

auntmargaret · 29/09/2013 22:33

I like Thomas, he is ace, so bad he's good. Bit of a disappointing episode, other than Dame Maggie's nanny comment. Tom needs to start flexing a wee bit of muscle, he's baby Sybie's father which makes him an important part of the family.

foxymoon487 · 29/09/2013 22:39

That Tom Branson is a good- looking man !!

alemci · 29/09/2013 22:46

Thomas is a likeable rogue.

foxymoon487 · 29/09/2013 23:10

Next week's ep looks a bit more exciting.
This week's slightly dull- although it
was nice what Bate's did to help
Mosely and Anna's ingenuity raised
a faint smile. But JF can do better.

Lua · 29/09/2013 23:18

What did Branson said to Lord G, after Lord G said "did you put her (Mary) up to this?"

It looks like Lord G will be loosing his money on a game of poker next week? Good timing to separate Mary's money from his...

diddl · 30/09/2013 07:15

Seems odd to me that Matthew would have left everything to Mary rather than just leaving her as guardian of everything until George was old enough, if necessary.

Or would that not have avoided death duties?

AndHarry · 30/09/2013 07:27

My Old Money app tells me that £30 in 1920 was equivalent to £636 in today's money. Oooooo.

So, plot line for next week: tall, dark, handsome stranger comes to Downton with the dual aim of winning all Lord 6's riches at cards with bonus points for marrying the wealthy Mary if he can. Predilection for downstairs company would indicate lower origins than he pretends: adventurer?

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2013 08:59

It would have avoided death duties but cast your mind back to series 1; twatty bum bum refused to try to break the entail on the estate in favour of Mary, that's why Matthew stood to inherit. I suppose he thought it should morally have been Mary's anyway. I did sniff a bit at the letter. Lucky woman to be loved so much.

diddl · 30/09/2013 10:47

I didn't realise that there had even been an option for Lord G to "break the entail" for Mary to inherit.

I thought that the issue also was that all of Cora's money was tied up in the estate, so that they couldn't leave any of the girls anything at all.

When they kept going on about how unfair it was to Mary, I thought it was reference to the fact that she thought she would marry the heir(Patrick), & now wouldn't, so that her expectation of living at & being mistress of Downton wouldn't happen, not that there had ever been a chance that she would get anything otherwise.

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2013 11:03

They could have tried on the basis that there was no male heir in the direct line and that following the line of inheritance would in fact have defeated the whole purpose of the entail which was to preserve the estate for the future generations. In the event it was decided it would be too hard (private act of parliament) and too expensive and uncertain of success.

The law of property act 1925 sorted out a lot of these kinds if problems, or at least prevented new entails causing similar situations in the future.

ppeatfruit · 30/09/2013 11:31

All these inheritance plots defeat me (i'm still trying to work out why the family with the girls in Sense and Sensibilty had to leave to live in a in a little cottage).

Chub I agree Mathew didn't have to try to be sexy I loved his eyes. Also Georgina I like DA too but it does need a few less plots and more depth in the way they are dealt with.

diddl · 30/09/2013 12:00

ppeat-I think in S&S, the son inherited & his wife wanted them out?

But yes, the "who will inherit DA" is wearing a bit thin now.

Matthew's dead, him & Mary had a son, & it's still being wittered on about!

ppeatfruit · 30/09/2013 12:02

Yes and now it's Death Duties FFS!

ppeatfruit · 30/09/2013 12:03

Oh thanks diddl Grin The son In S&S was from a first marriage though ? Am i right?

diddl · 30/09/2013 12:36

I think so yes, & I think that he was prepared to be more helpful towards them than his wife "would allow"?

Can't remember exactly.

breatheslowly · 30/09/2013 12:41

Surely the answer to who will inherit DA is eventually the National Trust.
