The mill

Starting tonight on C4. I wonder if it will be suitable for 10yo DD? They've "done" the Victorians at school so she might find it interesting. But the RT does say its a bit grim and the foreman regularly indecently assaults the women and girls! It is on at 8pm though.

But I think there might also be children dying in the machinery?

Perhaps depends how much is depicted & hinted at.

Ooh I might watch this, I like a good trouble at t'mill drama, - having just about recovered from the absolute downer that was The Village, I feel its time to thoroughly depress myself again. Grin

Hi - really looking forward to this - Downton Abbey it certainly won't be, and sounds like it is more of the gritty realism that was The Village! It might make uncomfortable viewing for us now in the 21st century, but it is part of the history curriculum, so may be worth watching and editing before allowing smaller children to watch.

Especially looking forward to the plot, based on real life evidence, personal accounts and actual documents from Quarry Bank Mill, - sounds like they needed to have aired this over the winter, not over summer holidays when most people will be away - it is a great and essential part of our heritage.

We used to live near QBM, and have regular school and family trips there, it is an amazing building, owned now by the National Trust. Our own village, on the Cheshire/Derbys borders had 4 such large mill buildings, all with their own character, though many have been redeveloped etc. I don't think it will be as sanitised and unrealistic as Cranford, hoping for a good balance, with some Catherine Cookson thrown in for good measure!

I'm looking forward to this, have sky+ and series linked so fingers crossed it will be worth it, I hated The Village, very disappointed in it, so hopefully The Mill will be a good watch.

Good advice. I will record it and have a look first. We are just about to watch Letters To Juliet on C4+1 with DD now anyway. She likes that.

We live about a mile away from the actual mill and dd has studied it for school. She's 8 and i'll let her watch.

Thanks for that Skrumpkin. I think my DD can handle it and the trailer doesn't look nearly as scary as the stuff in the Radio Times

I watched the furs 10 mins and switched over. Hideous, not entertainment at all.

Those of you considering shows it to kids, will you now you've seen the first 10 mins? Child rape and amputattion. Yeuch.

From The preview I read it seems that this is one hell of a depressing episode. I'll probably hire the DVD and watch at my leisure but no way am I watching things like this on Sunday nights - I need Downton or rom-com escapism instead.

Ok on the quiet tomorrow. Just seeing the end on +1 and it us very dark, literally. Not sure ill be able to follow what's going on.

It's not really suitable for 8pm I didn't think, but I only managed halfway before the phone rang.

I was hoping we'd see them walking to St Bartholomew's and some of the countryside, rather than everything being so dark! Although I did recognise almost all the rooms, yearly school trips there paid off Grin

Brilliant that you can recognise so much of it polka!

Some of game of thrones was filmed in my town and even a few locals got extra work- it was weird recognising your own area and familiar faces in it.

Why did they have to squeeze so much violence and gore in the first 15 mins we could have done with some background and context and a proper build up...

The millowners,the Greggs were supposed to have been really benevolent employers they built lots of mills in that part of cheshire, so goodess knows what the worst ones were like.
