So, out of 306 deserters shot in WW1, 2 came from this village?

PenelopePortrait · 29/04/2013 20:34

carole yes because it's Misery Central and we haven't had enough yet.

diddl · 29/04/2013 21:04

why 2, carol?

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 29/04/2013 21:07

I don't think the teacher was shot but I do think the village has one hell of a collection of stereotypes!

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 29/04/2013 21:13

I take it no one's read next week's synopsis - one burning question answered but very vague about another big issue. In fact, I think it could be a red herring...

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/04/2013 21:15

Do you have a link Mean?

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 29/04/2013 21:17

No, it's from a tv listings app on my phone :(

MarthasHarbour · 29/04/2013 21:24

Grin nehru - he just shot the cows - thats probably all Bert can remember so they had to shoe horn it in! Grin Confused

mean you are being very - erm - mean!! Give us a clue as to the listing!!

MarthasHarbour · 29/04/2013 21:28

Massive Spoiler Alert

I was right about the War Memorial!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/04/2013 21:32

Aaaaahhhh. I see.

MarthasHarbour · 29/04/2013 21:33

But whats the red herring wannabe i think mean has seen another synopsis that tells more Hmm

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/04/2013 21:35

Not sure about the red herring. Confused

PenelopePortrait · 29/04/2013 21:38

Another joyous episode to look forward to then. Not.

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 29/04/2013 21:44

Oh balls. The version I saw was very vague about Joe. Mentioned they were grieving and that the war memorial was missing a name, so wondered if the Middletons were grieving, say, the loss of a cow and that the missing name on the memorial was the evil teacher - but the BBC synopsis makes it clear about Joe. Dammit - for a moment I was hopeful!

MarthasHarbour · 29/04/2013 21:51

Bugger - sorry mean shouldnt-have posted that link

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 29/04/2013 22:04

Don't worry, was going to look at the Bbc one later anyway! :)

Ellenora5 · 29/04/2013 23:21

I gave up last night, after ten minutes I couldn't take anymore, far too dreary for me. I will have a look here next week to see how it ended, thanks people Smile

BanoffeeSplitz · 30/04/2013 00:12

Just watched this week's episode - what a harrowing ending Sad.

To cheer myself up slightly, I have decided that the female interviewer that Old Bert talks to at the beginning of each episode is a descendant (granddaughter?) of Caro's baby, researching her family tree & discovering that Joe Middleton is her great-grandfather.

She's going to write to the MOD to get him a posthumous pardon, and in 36 episodes time, the series will end with his name being added to the village war memorial.

I bloody hope the actor who plays Old Bert sticks around long enough for them to film all 42 episodes - he's great.

BanoffeeSplitz · 30/04/2013 00:15

When I watch it on iPlayer I have to click 'yes' to 'Adult Content'.
I swear for one of the episodes there was a glitch and it was described as 'Adult Humour' by mistake, which made me giggle (mirthlessly).

MarthasHarbour · 30/04/2013 08:56

I like your thinking banoffee Smile

Ellenora5 · 30/04/2013 09:31

You could have a point there banoffee, that would be good alright. Is there really 42 episodes altogether, it will go on for years.

Still18atheart · 30/04/2013 11:40

How can there be 42 episodes if it's finishing next week. or are they going to do seven series of 6 episodes each or something

diddl · 30/04/2013 12:26

I think it's meant to record the changes in the village for 100yrs, as told by Bert-isn't it?

So I think yes, 7 lots of six covering various periods is the idea-whether or not it actually works out...

Nehru · 30/04/2013 15:40

That's funny. I think the old bert is very am dram

smokinaces · 30/04/2013 19:33

Wonder if young bert will be a different actor now if he's meant to be 18 in Sundays episode?

So teacher comes back. And joe is dead :-(

No mention of Martha though. Still reckoning baby somehow.

And banoffee I like that idea :-)
