Just starting, I'm looking forward to this.

OP posts:

No, there are no happy bits.

Not. One. Single. Happy. Bit.

Obviously joe just needed a shag to get him back on his feet. Accurate portrayal of PTSD cure Confused

At least this isn't glorifying war.

LineRunner · 28/04/2013 22:04

Unhappiness tempered with misery.

VenusStarr · 28/04/2013 22:04

That was the best episode so far. It seemed to make more sense, rather than jumping from story to story with no conclusion. Shame it's taken til episode 5 to get better, it finishes next week!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 28/04/2013 22:04

Not one single happy scene

girliefriend · 28/04/2013 22:04

I think its worth watching as so well acted but not very cheerful no.

However sometimes it is good to remember some of the brutalities of the past.

GeorginaWorsley · 28/04/2013 22:04

Not many happy bits in the Great War i don't suppose.

Afrodizzywonders · 28/04/2013 22:05

No more Joe :(

Very sad episode.

I'll give it a miss then.

It's such a shame because the acting is great, it's filmed beautifully. But the script and plot are awful. It's just all too much for a Sunday evening.

Loveleopardprint · 28/04/2013 22:05

Blimey!! Thank goodness it finishes next week. Can't take much more!!

dollyindub · 28/04/2013 22:06

Brilliant performances, but bleak as hell.

Still18atheart · 28/04/2013 22:07

That's truly the most harrowing thing I've ever watched.

ExcuseTypos · 28/04/2013 22:07

I agree it's good to remember some of the brutalities of the past girlie

But not for the whole episode, every single week.

Afrodizzywonders · 28/04/2013 22:07

Wiki says that this could be the first episodes of what would be a 42 hour drama.....

BaconAndAvocado · 28/04/2013 22:08

OMG! How bloody awful!

I wish someone would, have shot the head doctor at the big house instead!

GeorginaWorsley · 28/04/2013 22:09

I know its not Downton or All Creatures Great And Small Wink but I like gritty realistic drama, sunday night or not.
Only very recently have 'deserters' been pardoned and 'shell shock' been recognised .Many of our families would have known of such cases or experienced them themselves.Next year marks 100m years since start of the conflict so we do well to remember.

AnnieJumpCannon · 28/04/2013 22:10

But it's coming back for a second series!

I like it.

GeorginaWorsley · 28/04/2013 22:11

Baby Mary survived scarlet fever last week, small ray of happiness there!

AnnieJumpCannon · 28/04/2013 22:11

... partly because all these things affected my granny. She named my dad after her brother who was killed in WW1.

diddl · 28/04/2013 22:13

Well I was confused about George.

He found & shot the injured cow.

How long after that did the father shoot the rest of them and himelf then??

As George was away at war??!!

Joe was a deserter then because ofcarrying Bert?

If not for that, would they have taken the Drs word that he was ill?
(The real Dr?)

'Tis all a bit far fetched-can't get out of bed-then has sex with Martha & finds & brings back Bert & the MPs happen along at that moment!

BaconAndAvocado · 28/04/2013 22:13

I like it too and it does make Downtowm Abbey look very fluffy now!

I like the strong female characters such as Maxine Peake and Juliet Stevenson. And little Bert is just gorgeous, those eyes!!

The relationship between Joe and Bert was extremely touching.

ExcuseTypos · 28/04/2013 22:13

Id want to shoot myself if I had to watch 42 hours of that misery.

GeorginaWorsley · 28/04/2013 22:14
