Hope no one else hasn't started one

cakebot River got to 1938 but the TARDIS couldn't. She said that it was because the vortex manipulator could sneak through

It appeared on my FB page today, but I do hope the story is dead!!

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 13/04/2013 18:48

Well, I enjoyed that one! Anyone else?

RustyBear · 13/04/2013 18:50

Yes, I liked it - had a very Second Doctor feel to it (and not just because of the Ice Warriors)

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 13/04/2013 18:55

It's always fun in a submarine, stokes up the tension.

ReadytoOrderSir · 13/04/2013 19:20

That was a cracking Who! Smile

Proper man-in-a-rubber-suit monster, confined space, mercy shown in the end ... classic.

iklboo · 13/04/2013 19:53

Loved that one.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2013 20:37

I thôught it was rubbish :( (how did I get that accent there?) slow, one dimensional characters and a cop out ending.

Thought the timing of the episode wasn't perhaps great with the current world affairs too Grin

Katisha · 13/04/2013 20:45

So far am not really liking this series. It seems to be getting all a bit twee and yet arch as well.

Choccyjules · 13/04/2013 21:51

Disappointing

marjproops · 13/04/2013 22:00

yy was ooookaaaay, and i usually love mark Gattisses episodes but it did seem a wee bit flat at times. David Warner (wheres he from) was great, but the ice warrior was a bit disappointing, if hes been frozen 5000 years then hed still be the old style one wouldnt he? not the updated thing that they keep doing with the daleks and cybermen and stuff.

Claras growing on me though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2013 22:39

Absolutely marj, he didn't even sound like a proper one.

marjproops · 13/04/2013 22:44

Bring back the Zygons!!!

who else should come back? Steven moffat says he wants new aliens and monsters but they cant just dismiss the old ones. or past companions...and no, not bloody billie piper again!

brill when its a sontaran/macra/dalek/cybermen episode.

love the weeping angels and ood and stuff, but.........

teejwood · 13/04/2013 22:53

Right - will need a rewatch as the kids were chirruping a bit but in general I quite liked that one. Gatiss does some great one-liners and there is a real gothic camp to his writing "the planet with be red with the blood of humaniteeeeee" or something like that Grin

Loved the development about the ice warrior coming out of his shell, and why he would do that. The suit responding to him so he could get back in, was great - but I could see some people wouldn't like it. The head and tail solution to show an ice warrior out of his armour was well done, I thought - the suggestion can be more frightening than the reality when it comes to monsters and showing just hints retains some of the mystique.

Ending was a bit of a damp squib, but I do wonder if it was just part 1 of 2 - maybe next year or the year after. Maybe the ice warrior wasn't showing compassion and forgiveness so much as postponing the action to a later date!

The 80's vibe was right - guffawed at Ultravox and Duran Duran. But also the knowledge that the cold war had to remain a phoney war, with posturing and manoeuvres but everyone knowing that as soon as any button was pressed it would be game over. Can't recall when they dated the ep but thought that if it had been a bit later, they could have had a bit of Frankie Goes to Hollywood "Two Tribes"!

It also hit me that this is SOOO prescient right now, with all the cold-war-esque posturing of North Korea at the minute being taken too close to reality.

Last week, Rings left me a bit meh - this week was more enjoyable.

Slight quibble - the Tardis had vacated the sub and was in the South Pole - so does the translation matrix really cover that distance? In terms of Clara, do we now know that the Tardis will translate for her? If so, what happened last week? It struck me that perhaps it did not translate for her when the Doctor wasn't around - so does that mean the Tardis just doesn't realise she's there, and Clara is just being caught up in the translation matrix for the Doctor when they are together? Or was the barking non-translation just a bit of liberty with the plot last week for the sake of a laugh?

teejwood · 13/04/2013 22:57

Oh Marj - patience re the old monsters!! They're coming!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2013 22:58

I want the yeti to come back (cos I like to mutter 'yeti on the line' when the tube inexplicably stops) and that cool ultimate killing thing in the five doctors that is all silver and swoops from place to place chopping off cybermens heads off and whatnot.

RustyBear · 13/04/2013 23:03

The translation thing has worked for previous companions when the TARDIS was on a different planet, so I don't think Pole to Pole would be a problem. Also, the Doctor understood Baby River (or strictly speaking her ganger) when Amy didn't, so maybe there are some languages the TARDIS doesn't translate.

RustyBear · 13/04/2013 23:05

Oh, you mean the most perfect killing machine ever devised, OYBBK?

teejwood · 13/04/2013 23:05

Kitten I hear you, but my worry is whether the Yeti will work in the new era? It was so ridiculous and camp in the old days and I think it would be more difficult to get a convincing, frightening Yeti for modern audiences. Then again, we do have the tellytubby daleks. Sigh.

teejwood · 13/04/2013 23:07

True, good point, Rusty. So do you think the doggy-speak in Rings was just left in for a gag?

RustyBear · 13/04/2013 23:10

Not sure - I would have thought so if it hadn't been for the locking-out of the TARDIS bit - that ought to mean something, but it may just be Moffat screwing with our heads...

teejwood · 13/04/2013 23:10

OMG just watched that clip Rusty - brilliant mashup!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2013 23:14

Oh that is brilliant! Not seen that before Grin

The yeti weren't very scary admittedly, but with a few special effects.... Mind you they'd be given some ridiculous line to chant over and over.

Pixel · 13/04/2013 23:30

Well it was enjoyable enough, despite the fact that they'd have all been electrocuted at the same time as the ice warrior, given that they were standing in about a foot of water at the time (that and the hails of bullets that apparently don't ricochet when you are in a submarine firing point blank at a suit of armour, but hey ho).

Liked the professor with his walkman, and yes, Clara is growing on me too. At least she has the decency to look like a drowned rat (as I definitely would) when she gets wet, unlike certain other people Amy and their constantly perfect locks. I know it's petty, but it makes me warm to the girl Smile.

Dd and I thought it would have been good if the Tardis had gone to fetch help, Lassie style. Grin

Pixel · 13/04/2013 23:36

Fantastic! I must show that clip to dd, she will love it. She used to call our neighbour's rather vicious rabbit 'Dynamite' as in "that rabbit's dynamite" She loves Monty Python .

MavisGrind · 13/04/2013 23:45

Well, I was a little disapointed. It wasn't a bad episode but it just wasn't outstanding which I could have previously expected with the Mark Gatiss input. Clara is ok but these episodes are really showing the constraints of a 45 minute runtime.

On another point - the car that narrowly missed the father of Clara in the last epidode - was that the same make of car that ran over Pete Tyler??
