I'm really enjoying it, though it does feel like they are shoe-horning in cultural references at certain points.

Regarding the older versions of the characters, they all look feasible as the characters once theyve aged except for Alan. He looks nothing like his younger self!

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 12:00

No I agree Alan is the least recognisable. I am amazed that no one I know is watching.

I love this- it's my favourite programme at the moment. I agree about the shoehorning, but on the whole, I think the way it has covered the women's movement in particular has been so accurate.

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 12:36

Yes they try and get it all in but I still love it. The music is really stirring my memories. And the flat share just feels real

I can't stand Jack- I wish he had met a grisly end when his character was about 21.

noddyholder · 06/04/2012 13:24

I think Jack is so so accurate though for that 'type' I know many of them and a few have met tragic ends.

Oh - I like this series too and so do my 3 teendaughters - sad it was given such awful early reviews. I do think its unrealisitic that most of them are still renting in the flat when they would be in their 30's . Jay and Orla have well paid/prestigious jobs.

Jack and Charlotte are definetely the stars and their characters are much more fleshed out. Feel that Jay and Orla and to some extent Victor have been used too little. I don't feel the love between Victor and Charlotte (younger versions). Young Victor has such high moral standards and a lack of humour that I would not like to be with him. You can see much more passion with Charlotte and Jack. Wish Orla could get a nice boyfriend.

Who do you think has died? The cast list has older versions listed for every flatmate.

didldidi · 07/04/2012 09:47

Its jack isn't it? - mind you i did just assume that as i missed the first episode. Alan appears to have also changed accents more northern now than geordie!

OddBoots · 07/04/2012 10:04

I was sure it was Jack but I'm questioning now. I'm finding Tamsin Greig's acting absolutely brilliant.

didldidi · 07/04/2012 10:14

Well they're clearing the house and it'sup for sale which would suggest it was jack as he owned it didn't he?

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2012 10:17

Apparently it's got a surprise ending so I'm guessing it's not jack.

bunnybing · 07/04/2012 11:21

Yes am enjoying this too. Agree that some characters are not fleshed out enough - they need more episodes. Also agree that you can't really see why Charlotte is with Victor - he may be good and honourable but he doesn't seem much fun. After last weeks episode I actually felt more sympathy for Jack.

Yes Tamsin Greig is brilliant as always but I remember her as the kooky love interest in Black Books - she seems to get all the down-trodden middle-aged mother parts now!

NigellasGuest · 07/04/2012 11:37

Perhaps it's Jack's father who has died?

Re. Tamsin Greig, I much prefer her as a middle-aged mother. She just irritated me beyond belief as the character in Episodes, and in Love Soup. She is better in White Heat, and also as the Jewish mother in that comedy - can't remember the name now.

Hattytown · 07/04/2012 11:56

I too love this series.

I think Jack's an odious character though - selfish, self-absorbed, no principles and content to live on his parents' handouts that were earned from the things he professes to despise e.g inherited wealth and Tory politics.

I think Charlie's an unsympathetic character too - lacking warmth and humanity and another one who doesn't reconcile her politics with her actions in her personal life.

Re Victor, I don't think I'd have much of a sense of humour either if I'd experienced the racism he was exposed to - and that is what life was like for young black men in that era.

Tamsin Greig is brilliant though as usual, but feel it's shame we haven't seen more of Juliet Stephenson.

Apart from the clothes, the continuity is very good and true to to the different eras e.g. care in the community, misogny, women having to have male permission for everyday rights, the 'sus' laws, IRA terrorism, the Thatcher disaster.

I''m going to miss this a lot.

noddyholder · 07/04/2012 14:04

Tamsin grieg is amazing. I am thinking it isn't jack either.

I thought right from the start that we couldn't assume it was Jack but now all the male characters apart from Jack have appeared as their older selves... unless Orla has had a sex change Hmm

I don't think the casting is that great. Lily has dropped her accent completely, Victor is about three shades lighter, Alan has had a nose job and as you say didldidi has changed his accent, Charlotte's lips and eyes have disappeared. Jay is cast well though.

Having said that (also agree about the shoehorning in of 'issues') I will see it through to the end.

noddyholder · 07/04/2012 14:38

I think the casting as the young characters is very good.

didldidi · 07/04/2012 15:53

Have we seen jay and orla in the present day yet?

LeBOF · 07/04/2012 18:00

We saw Jay this week, I think.

didldidi · 07/04/2012 18:57

We did? i don't remember...

NigellasGuest · 07/04/2012 19:09

We definitely did.
But not that much. Perhaps you were putting the kettle on!

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2012 19:16

He was the bloke off This Life. Ramon Tikarum ( Tanita's brother, fact fans). Came in at the beginning and then we flashed back to when he was dealing with Jack's drug problems.

Bproud · 07/04/2012 21:03

Thanks puppy that has been bugging me. He was beautiful in This Life, my fave EVER series. But isn't he really tall? Jay must have grown..

LeBOF · 07/04/2012 21:52

I wondered if he was related to Tanita!

carernotasaint · 07/04/2012 23:06

Yes they are brother and sister.
