The Wire. Is it really that good?

I have 8 episodes of this on sky+ from the beginning of series one taking up space on my +box. I can't seem to muster enthusiasm to watch them so I either delete them to make space, or I start watching them tonight. Just feel a bit meh about it. So. Is it worth watching? Or an over-hyped piece of nonsense?

Yes it is (really that good). But give it a few episodes.

rockinastocking · 26/02/2012 20:25

Yep, it really is that good, particularly series 1-3.

It's ruined telly drama for me, tbh. Can't take anything else seriously.

Not usually given to hyperbole. But that is great telly.

jenrendo · 26/02/2012 20:25

I LOVED it! We borrowed it as a box set from my sister and ended up with it on all weekend. Once you get into it it's hard to switch off!

40notTrendy · 26/02/2012 20:27

Ooh watch it. We watched all 6 series. Excellent acting, superb stories. It's a slow burner but very cleverly told.

bananaistheanswer · 26/02/2012 20:38

Ok, I think that seems pretty unanimous! If I can make the time once the washing is all sorted, I'll sit down and force myself to switch it on.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes.

If you've deleted the first ones just watch the others and come back here so people can help you.

marthamay · 27/02/2012 13:47

It takes 3-4 episodes to REALLY get involved but it's well, well, well worth doing it because it's best telly ever!

akaemmafrost · 27/02/2012 18:49

It gets good in episode 4, suddenly you are IN! So many great characters love, love, love McNulty and Stringer Bell, whereas my sister loves Omar. I am watching from episode 1 on Atlantic and look forward to Friday nights every week now.

40notTrendy · 27/02/2012 18:57

Omar is the best tv character ever.

DukesOfTripHazard · 27/02/2012 19:03

Re: Everything that everyone's said.... true dat.

moonblushtomato · 27/02/2012 19:17

I found it very very complicated but then I am quite a simple soulSmile

That said if Idris Elba is in it thats reason enough alone to tune in.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/02/2012 19:27

You won't like it until episode 4 but if you persevere you will become converted to the best series ever - ties with the west wing for genius.

I didn't watch it till last year - DH and I watched the whole thing in six weeks and I cried when it finished.

And don't turn the subtitles on even if you dont know what the fuck is going on - it takes a while for your ear to tune in.

40notTrendy · 27/02/2012 20:13

Oh yes, meant to add you won't understand a word of it for a while. And keep watching regularly so once you get the lingo you won't lose it! But it's a bit like the West Wing in that you don't need to know the details, just bask in it you'll get it!

MrsCog · 27/02/2012 20:19

Yes - it's great, I recommend putting subtitles on to make it easier to understand though! And yes, each series takes 3-4 episodes to get properly in to it.

dapplegrey · 27/02/2012 21:06

Yes it is excellent. We bought the box set and watched one or two episodes every evening. During the day I found myself really looking forward to it (yes, I know I need to get out more...........)
The acting is unbelievably good.

wintera · 28/02/2012 20:17

Am I the only one who was hooked from episode one then? It didn't take me a few episodes I was hooked straight from the off. I watched season one and two steadily but season three I watched back to back, honestly it was the only thing I watched for a couple of days. So much so I had to have a break then before watching season four because I had overdosed on it! So many great characters it's hard to pick a favourite, but Omar has to be the top one for me.

silverbay · 28/02/2012 21:11

Gave up after three episodes, since then a few people i know have said that you have to watch 4 to get into it. Reeeally CBA to try again, sorry but I couldn't understand a word..

zanz1bar · 28/02/2012 21:19

Do bears?
Is the Pope?

Yes it really is that good.

FuriousRox · 28/02/2012 21:20

It's complex and rewarding in equal measure. The acting is excellent. It ruins other TV series - watching something like 24 afterwards is a bit like reading Shakespeare and then reading Janet and John. It;s just completely excellent. Stick with it and you'll soon be a Wire-bore/fanatic like the rest of us.

limitedperiodonly · 28/02/2012 21:36

wintera I found episode one hard going until the very end. I liked it from then on. I was warned about this but now I can't for the life of me remember what happened at the end of episode one to interest me.

Without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't watched: what happens in episode 4 that's so compelling? Is it when Avon and Stringer strike back against Omar?

iklboo · 28/02/2012 21:40
