Maybe this thread will quickly die a death, but I was wondering if anyone watched this? Once you, you know, got past all the ultra-violent comic book violence and sex....It was really, really good! All fighting and honour and spirits that won't be broken and saying things like "by Jupiter's cock!" Hahaha! John Hannah was excellent in it! Shame his character was brutally killed in a fit of righteous justice last season....

So sad about the original Spartacus actor Andy Whitfield dying before this new season started and they'd already replaced him because he had to pull out anyway. But still. Feel kind of bad for the new actor as Andy was so popular.

Maybe I'll be chatting to myself in this thread ;) But very much looking forward to series three!

You are not alone - looking forward to this, although its very sad about Andy Whitlfield.

Jupiters Cock!

Newtothisstuff · 28/01/2012 15:29

I'm very excited about my weekly loin cloth session returning.. Will be interested to see how the new Spartacus fits in.. Very very sad about him dying.. But excited all the same Grin

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2012 18:02

I liked the second series because it fills in lots of holes and John Hannah and Lucy Lawless's actions don't seem quite as unreasonable. I said 'quite' Grin

And it's got lots of semi-naked men in it.

Very sad about poor Andy Whitfield too.

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2012 18:03

Actually, lots of the men are fully naked but I'm not that fussed about whether I see winkles or not.

bettybat · 28/01/2012 20:17

Yay! Grin

Kill them all! He had to right? Every time he dreamt about his wife she told him to, after Batiatus (sp?) had her killed..he deserved all he got. But did Spartacus actually kill them all....?

I don't want to be a spoiler!

The House of Batiatus sounds like a scent that ends up in the bargain bin at Superdrug

bettybat · 29/01/2012 10:10

I might have just watched the first episode.....very, very good!

I watched the cast's live webcast online the other night, the new Spartacus isn't quite as beautiful as Andy Whitfield was, but he looks promising, I just hope he has the same intense emotional depth and charisma.
Lucy Lawless as Lucretia gone a bit loco is going to be highly entertaining and they're bringing in some new characters too , they've changed Naevia though Sad.
Looking forward to tonight, have resisted the arge to watch the first episode online by watching old episodes of blood and sand.

limitedperiodonly · 30/01/2012 15:25

I didn't realise it's a new series that's on tonight.

I clashes with two other things so I can't record it. I was going to have an early night but somehow I'll find something to keep me awake Grin

Malificence · 30/01/2012 15:40

Trailer for the new series

Oh yes, blood, guts and sex galore, excellent. Grin
MissMogwi · 30/01/2012 21:21

Oh thank you all. I had no idea there was new series. I luffs Spartacus. I hope this is as good as the previous two.

MissMogwi · 30/01/2012 21:21

bettybat · 30/01/2012 21:28

Agreed about the new Spartacus - he doesn't quite have Andy's whole tortured, beautiful, angsty, anti-hero way about him but god, he is similar in quite a lot of ways!

My DH was getting annoyed that I was all Hmm at Spartacus suddenly OK with being...relationship-y with that slave girl sent to him by Lucretia last season. Even on pain of her death would he not sleep with her! All honour bound to his dead wife and everything and now what - three months later, is it supposed to be - he's going out with her??

I'm a bit undecided, the brothel scene was really grim, I found it very unpleasant to watch and think it went a bit too far, almost as if it was trying to make what was basically rape and sexual torture titillating instead of horrific.
The new Spartacus just hasn't got the depth and inner turmoil but I'm biased because Andy Whitfield was such an utterly beautiful man. Sad

MissMogwi · 31/01/2012 08:30

I concur.Grin

It was a bit much, I thought maybe it was for the shock factor to get it publicised.

New Spartacus wasn't a patch onAndy Whitfield either. Lucy Lawless was great though.

StellaAndFries · 31/01/2012 08:35

The new Spartacus isn't a patch on Andy Whitfield, I didn't understand how he's suddenly in a relationship with the ex slave girl either.

It's ok but I don't think it'll match series 1.

limitedperiodonly · 01/02/2012 09:08

The brothel scene was just more of the same theme. Rape features for titilation in almost every episode. Is rape worse than someone having his willy cut off and nailed up to bleed to death, or the whole business of graphic scenes of people being forced to kill each other for entertainment because they're slaves?

I ignore it, it's not particularly sound of me, but I like the show.

I'm also going to ignore the fact that Lucy Lawless clearly died in Blood and Sandals and if she didn't, how she recovered enough to stitch up her wound, particularly since she's not all the ticket any more.

Who was it that didn't kill her? Spartacus or Crixus? Was she with child with Crixus's child?

Is Ilythia with child with the old Spartacus's child?

MissMogwi · 01/02/2012 09:23

It was Crixus. He wasn't too happy when he saw her was he. I couldn't tell if he was the same actor?

I missed John Hanna(sp?), he's a great actor and I loved his rants. Jupiter's Cock!Grin

MissMogwi · 01/02/2012 09:29

Oh and yeah it was his child.
I'm not sure about the blond Roman woman's child. I expect so, they can have a Jeremius Kyleus special and work it out.

limitedperiodonly · 01/02/2012 09:38

Thanks. It is the same actor. I had to check that Ilythia was the same though - I thought they'd replaced her that dreadful Jamie Murray who was mercifully killed off in Gods of the Arena.

She manages to drag down the acting average in everything she's in; even something as shamelessly wooden as Spartacus.

I don't know what they were thinking when they cast her in the wonderful Dexter. Jupiter's Cock indeed.

limitedperiodonly · 01/02/2012 09:46

betty I agree that Spartacus would be true to his wife's memory. He shagged Ilythia but he was forced into it and she wore a mask so he was probably able to imagine it was his late wife.

I wouldn't call his relationship with the slave girl going out though. It's not much of a date, is it, coupling in a sewer? Wink

bettybat · 01/02/2012 10:01

Hahaha yes, coupling in the sewer!

I thought it was Spartacus that stabbed Lucretia? Didn't she think she was having sex with Crixus with the mask on, but it was actually Spartacus exacting his revenge on her? Then when they found the mask in the house of Batitatus, that's why it had such significance?

I loved the blonde, super posh, pregnant Roman woman's reason for killing that other woman last season - which is why her husband is so angry with her (because it made them in cahoots with Lecretia and Batitatus): "Because she was a FUCKING BITCH!" Hahahaha!

About the rape/brothel scene - to be honest, given the first shot was of a woman butt-sexing a guy, I didn't pay it too much mind. The whole entire ethos of the programme is ruthless brutality - does no one remember the scene in when Batitatus just grabbed the slave girl in the bath? It is what it is - I don't think they really discriminate between gender brutality!

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 01/02/2012 12:15

when Batitatus just grabbed the slave girl in the bath?

With Lucretia directing.

I don't know who did the stabbing at all.

But I thought it was Ilythia (blonde, posh, pregnant woman married to the fantastically stolid Glabba) who was fooled by Lucretia into sex with the masked Spartacus thinking he was Crixus.

Lucretia wanted Crixus for herself, not Spartacus. Odd choice, I thought.

Spartacus was Ilythia's mortal enemy after offending her in some way, perhaps by resisting her charms in memory of his late wife, which is how it should be.

Ilythia bashed the other woman's head in for also being in on the trick. Lucretia is blackmailing Ilythia who is understandably keen to keep the real reason for the murder from Glabba.

I don't know who Spartacus thought he was having sex with but he was a helpless tool in the whole affair.

bettybat · 01/02/2012 12:27

^ Yes that's right! Like Celine Dion, it's all coming back to me now Grin

OP posts:
bettybat · 01/02/2012 12:29

And yes, very much agreed - the beautiful-yet-tortured Thracian wins out over the meathead Crixus EVERY time.
