TERRIBLE TV sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I can't find the remote control - have just watched Keeping Up Appearances and now Allo Allo is on.

What a crock of shit.

Terribly contrived situations with 'hilarious' consequences.

Patricia Routledge is a great actress but the canned laughter, slobby family and just everything in it is so dire.

And Allo Allo - I don't get it. Who thought it would be funny to have a comedy about german occupation and the French resistance? Made by the BBC? With canned laughter? And Madonna with a big boobies? Were people complete divs back then?

Oh yes, Reece Dinsdale, Bupcakes. It was 'Home To Roost' I had such a crush on him then.

I think I know far too much about sitcoms.

What was that one with Nigel Havers playing a WWII plane flyer? He was always dressed up like Biggles in it.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 04/11/2011 11:47

That's his Scandinavian working name. < nods >

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 11:47

Plane flyer - pilot, blates.

I exist on this thread merely to say "What was that one where..." :(

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 11:48

How do you spell it? Thaw? Thore? Thawe? THOR is so much better.

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 11:49

Home to Roost! yes!

ShirleyKnot · 04/11/2011 11:51

Plane Flyer.

Wasn't that not a comedy and he was actually a bit of a sod and it had that "You're the Tops" as the theme tune and it was called Chancer or Charmer or summat?

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 11:51

There is NO Home To Roost on Youtube!

What the flip?!

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 11:54

Shirley, the one where he was a plane flyer was A Perfect Hero. He did star in one called The Charmer which was set in the 1930s.

I love Havers. I would go on a Saga holiday with him.

Fiderer · 04/11/2011 11:56

Bupcakes - "Home to Roost"? Poor John bloody Thaw.

I liked "Waiting for God"
Agree "The Good Life" still watchable - Margot was wonderful. I still say "Language Jerry!" to the children. Not that they pay any attention but it amuses me.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 04/11/2011 11:56

It is!

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 11:56

Oh sorry. On closer inspection, A Perfect Hero was not a comedy. It was about burns victims from the army Blush It's that soding theme tune. It was so jolly that I thought it was a comedy.

ItDoesNotFollow · 04/11/2011 11:58

Home Sweet home - with a very young Martin Clunes and the other one (Bob the builder) was 'sammy the shammy'

The two onnies had a weekly sketch called where basically the women were the breadwinners and the men made tea .....

.....seriously - where to begin on that one!!!??? Confused

Fiderer · 04/11/2011 11:59

X-post with several dozen posters!

I thought when I grew up my life would be like Rhoda's. Was a bit of a shock to discover it wasn't.

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 12:00

That's made my week, Flossie! Grin

OhTinky · 04/11/2011 12:01

Has anyone mentioned that dire "comedy" with jasper carrot and meera syal yet?

Redrubyblue · 04/11/2011 12:02

Get Some In. It was set on an RAF base........

Redrubyblue · 04/11/2011 12:04

OhTinky

OMG! I had blocked that one out. The most polically correct comedy known to man with the kid in the wheelchair who...............

I really cannot go on..................

Again. There. Are. No. Words.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 04/11/2011 12:17

Bupcakes - Smile

I'm gonna have a youtube watching afternoon.

wotsfortea · 04/11/2011 12:34

Ooh I loved Get Some In. Wonder if there's a box set ...

ItDoesNotFollow · 04/11/2011 12:49

I quite liked Gimme Gimme Gimme - esp the neighbours ... something and suze - and the one where they all dressed up as BucksFizz Blush

Hated the one with Sam Janus in though and the 'double hard bastard' stuff....

polyhymnia · 04/11/2011 12:49

Just caught up with this and delighted to find other people out there who also loathed Allo Allo and didn't find it remotely funny. Ditto Keeping Up Appearances.

BupcakesandCunting · 04/11/2011 12:54

Jez and Suze! Gimme Gimme Gimme was hilarious in such a puerile way. Tom Farrell was such a great character. Even my curmudgeonly old dad laughed at GGG!

polyhymnia · 04/11/2011 12:57

Oh and also, like some others, hated anything by Carla Lane.

One thing I did like was A Bit of a Do, written by David Nobbs - not exactly a sitcom, more of a comedy drama, written by David Nobbs and very well acted. (Even though I'm not generally a fan of David Jason who was in it).

And I did love Love Hurts with Zoe Wanamaker and Adam Faith, and also Just Good Friends, by John Sullivan.
