Thanks for the reminder.... just switched over. Am hoping film better than book, which I found a bit hmm

grumpypants · 27/10/2011 22:08

Not looking good so far!

Started and then decided I couldn't be bothered. The book was mediocre at best.

blinkineck · 27/10/2011 22:18

I'm watching. May persevere.

grumpypants · 27/10/2011 22:20

I'm thinking the first episode will end with The Slap

I obviously live under a rock as I have heard nothing about either the book or the series. Blush

It seems ok, but I watched half way through and the voiceover bit is VERY annoying.

Kellamity · 27/10/2011 22:51

I kept meaning to read the book but never got round to it. Have started watching and so far I feel quite lucky I didn't read the book!!

grumpypants · 27/10/2011 22:55

Switched over now. Oh well.

I'd not read the book and was expecting a group of English, middle class stereotypes, so it was surprise for me to see the characters.

I'm interested to see how it will turn out, though wish I didn't dislike Hector so much. Their kids were nice and normal though.

diddl · 28/10/2011 07:39

Meant to watch it but forgot.

8 episodes though!

noddyholder · 28/10/2011 11:31

I really enjoyed it. All the characters v like the book thoroughly unlikeable crew but strangely compelling.

bigTillyMint · 28/10/2011 11:35

Yes, yes Noddy - really like the book and realy unlikeable characters Smile

cyb · 28/10/2011 15:26

It made me feel as on edge as the book did

Horrible characters

ImperialBlether · 28/10/2011 15:46

I enjoyed it last night - I haven't read the book and was shocked that it wasn't Hector who carried out the slap!

Looked like lots of interesting things there - the babysitter flirting with Hector, the breastfeeding of the slapped boy, etc.

Is a different point of view shown each week?

cyb · 28/10/2011 15:49

If its like the book it will be

I just hate sex scenes where they are like AT IT after 2 seconds of kissing

noddyholder · 28/10/2011 15:51

He really was creepy! I hated her too found them all so so irritating the casting was brilliant. And the boys parents were perfect. Loved the house and garden though Envy

Itsjustafleshwound · 28/10/2011 15:54

I enjoyed it - not very likeable characters but seems to be true to the book in a lot of ways

cyb · 28/10/2011 15:55

Arf at nodders oggling the soft furnishings

Itsjustafleshwound · 28/10/2011 15:57

cyb - IIRC each chapter of the book is told through the eyes of one of the people at the Barbie (to use the correct terminology!!)

Itsjustafleshwound · 28/10/2011 15:58

Sorry, cyb - that was to Imperial (teach me to read correctly!)

noddyholder · 28/10/2011 15:59

It was the art actually and the garden Grin

ImperialBlether · 28/10/2011 16:14

Yes, the sex scene. The wife has had a hell of a day, up since 6, no help whatsoever, disastrous end to the party.

Then he kisses her, she pulls off her knickers and immediately he's inside her. He has an orgasm. I don't think the director even thought of whether she might have one, but if she had, she must be the kind of person who can't walk down the street without having one, because she had so little lead up or stimulation.

My friend is Australian and has said actually this sums up Aussie men - hmmm I always thought she was being cynical.

noddyholder · 28/10/2011 16:17

The sex scene was exactly what you would expect of him

orangina · 28/10/2011 17:09

Loved the book, and somehow missed the fact that this was on! Perhaps it will be on iPlayer?

cornycabana · 28/10/2011 17:10

he made my skin crawl
