Bbc 4 - I'm already not liking it! And I did like the book

oh thanks cornyGrin

did you enjoy the slap?

smugaboo · 02/11/2011 22:12

Hey,
Just watched the 4th episode (Connie). I'm in Australia. I have never read the book but if you half liked or are interested in the series - stick with it. I think its great so far. Each episode is a slow burn but I find I am mulling over each episode/scenario for the following week. I don't find the characters too unlikeable at all - and I understand that was a common complaint with the book. Perhaps the actors (who are v.good) managed to bring some more dimensions to the characters.

Ep 2 Brilliant So moving and well acted

kitya · 04/11/2011 08:45

I knew it would be if people gave it a chance. I guess thats what happens when you read a book first. Although the posters on here never even liked the book, that would be enough for me not to watch it anyway!

saffronwblue · 04/11/2011 08:55

Last night's episode focusing on Rosie was the best so far I thought.
I do think they have done the house interiors well. I love the rich cousins with their super opulent house with not a book in sight.
And the vet clinic episodes are flimed at my local vet's! My cats have boarded there!
Hector is Jonathon La Paglia, the brother of the more famous Anthony La Paglia.
As Connie would say..Swooon!

noddyholder · 04/11/2011 08:58

Oh no spoilers Grin I am really enjoying it. Toy boy very cute and the scenes with anouk,s mum were so real.

smugaboo · 04/11/2011 11:36

Won't spoil Noddy I promise - but the court room scene with Rosie was brilliant. I felt every blow with her.

smugaboo · 04/11/2011 11:37

PS - re the interiors. I noticed a dent in the wall at Rosie's house where the door handle hit against and the wall - and I thought that was so real.

juneybean · 04/11/2011 11:40

I only half watched ep 2 last night, so I might have to rewatch it but I'm enjoying it so far, but I liked the book also.

BettyBum · 04/11/2011 16:42

I'm loving it. Didn't read the book but I think the characters are really interesting and I like that it's quite gritty in places. I'm swooning over the houses so far!

anonacfr · 04/11/2011 23:42

Like you I haven't read the book but am enjoying the series. The acting is v good and I like the slow reveal of the characters' various connections. I can't wait to see Rosie's episode as I can't figure ou her relationship with her husband.
And I'm curious to find out about her son- she's so over protective as if he is sick?

pink4ever · 05/11/2011 08:18

I found episode 2-anouk-really upsetting. All the way through it I knew she was going to have an abortion and I thought it was such a cliche-career women who cant possibly have a baby because she wants to write a bookHmm

Will keep watching though.

oranges · 05/11/2011 08:30

isnt it more of a cliche to have career woman who decides just in time that what she really, really wants is the baby? aka miranda in sex and the city?

noddyholder · 05/11/2011 08:38

I agree orange. I think she would have been the cliche if she had gone ahead. There were so many factors that influenced her decision Inc his age oth their life styles her mum etc etc.

diddl · 05/11/2011 08:45

I agree with pink-it was all so obvious.

Am wondering what the point of that episode was tbh.

The woman whose son was slapped-can´t warm to her at all tbh-maybe that´s the point.

You don´t like the parents & have little sympathy for the child?

Although if they are such good friends, why someone wouldn´t have said "FFS do something with your son" is beyond me.
(misses point of storyGrin)

anonacfr · 05/11/2011 11:55

I didn't think it was cliche.
She'd felt left out over the years because her best buddies had motherhood in common and it wasn't something she could share with them.
She finds herself pregnant. The father is a sweet guy but he's a lot younger, immature and a total dopehead.

She tries to tell herself that maybe having the baby is the next logical step in her life but finally realises that she doesn't want motherhood.
So she goes ahead with the abortion.

You don't see that very often on TV shows.

pink4ever · 05/11/2011 13:45

Sorry but completely disagree-I felt she did want the baby but had convinced herself it wasnt feasible due to her job,mum and younger boyfriend. She stopped drinking-who does that if they are going to terminate anyway?-and there was a moment she almost told the boyf and she looked happy about it. I think she was influenced by rosie reaction and advice-who clearly was very jealous of anouk.

diddl · 05/11/2011 14:04

There was something odd about Rosie´s reaction, I thought.

I don´t know why, but something made me think that she hadn´t really wanted to have her son but had been made to.

I loved the song that was played at the end.

anonacfr · 05/11/2011 16:56

Interesting Diddl. I thought she seemed jealous of Anouk being pregnant, like she wanted another child but couldn't. Which would explain why she's so over protective as a mother.

Funny that Pink and I had the opposite reaction. The scene where she finds her bf high and giggling in front of the TV, her look of relief when Rosie tells her to do what she wants not what she feels she has to, her careless babysitting of Aisha and Hugo's kids... I thought all those were clear signs that she really didn't want a child, especially as she finally had the time to write the novel she'd always wanted to write.

diddl · 05/11/2011 17:03

I wondered if the overprotective was guilt at not really wanting him.

Not been watching that closely, but apart from the bfeeding, she seems quite hands off/disinterested.

When Rosie told her to do what she wanted, I thought that she would take that as the "OK" she needed to have the baby tbh.

Rollergirl1 · 05/11/2011 18:06

I think Rosie reacted like that to Anouk because she really wants another child but they can't afford to have one.

clangermum · 05/11/2011 21:38

Rosie's reaction was really odd - I was surprised Anouk wasn't offended by it. If you tell someone you're pregnant and they then cry, but not in a good way...

Likewise I thought it was because Rosie wanted but couldn't have a second child, or maybe had been trying for a while

I don't really understand the Rosie character yet. Episode 2 was good for sketching a bit about the 3 girls being central, but I still wasn't sure, if Rosie was about 5 years younger than the other two, how they became so close and Rosie was so close to Anouk's mum. If they'd all been the same age maybe...but it's good that it doesn't just wash over you like so much other stuff - it makes you think

BeadyBagsaTella · 05/11/2011 23:12

Yes, I wondered about Rosie's relationship with Anouk and her mother. How did she become so close? I wondered if Rosie lived with them for a while.
Am hoping more will be revealed in the next episode.

I haven't read the book (or I'd probably know the answer!) but enjoying the Tv series so far.

Mrsrobertduvall · 06/11/2011 10:09

I loved episode 2. Thought the actress playing Anouk was gorgeous.
Do not warm to Rosie at all.

clangermum · 06/11/2011 10:43

Yes BBT, if Rosie had lived with Anouk and her mum for a while, that would explain them being like sisters and her hanging out with the others when she was 15. Otherwise 5 years seems a big gap at that age. When the three of them were in the mum's house, Rosie and Anouk seemed more like sisters - the way Rosie got annoyed that Anouk hadn't even mentioned the slap. If it carries on like this, gradually revealing stuff you're wondering about, it's quite clever.
