SATC Selfish self obsessed fake and spoilt women

I know it's been going years, but I've only just started watching it, cruising around daytime tv, when feeding etc.
Is there an irony I am missing? Miranda and Samantha don't annoy me so much as at least there is an honesty and intelligence about them. But Carrie!?? She is just a horrible person I would hate to have as a friend. She is so manipulative and so incredibly into herself. It is really annoying me. I shouldn't watch it. Why is she 'popular' in popular culture? I don't get it. She just makes me cringe.

Carrie is so totally annoying. She's supposed to be clever and witty and well read and yet displays a total lack of culture (I mean the Paris episodes were soooo embarrassing...).
Funny you should post this today. I was for some random reason pondering about Carrie today. She reminds me of Liz Jones.

For the record I can't think of any guy I know who fancies Carrie.

No men hate her, dh cringes when she comes on screen.

She's v self-obsessed and vain and spoilt....I never "got" her.

Like Miranda though...she's the best one

I completely agree. I hate that show. It's supposed to be all 'single, empowered, liberated women' bollocks while actually being all about men and shopping. Feminism anyone? It gives women a bad name - and the characters are completely one dimensional.

don't like Carrie and don't like anything I've read about the actress who plays her

all this calling her by her initials SJP for christs sake

also the perfume she brought out was called beautiful with a picture of her meaning she is beautiful, well she's not, I've seen prettier girls working in Boots

mind you its not as bad as friends...............bloody hate that and all the crap surrounding jennifer aniston

Carrie is awful. The whole take on Mr Big where he jerked her around and broke her heart - what she actually means is he didn't just do what she wanted when she wanted in the way she wanted. I hate Carrie!

The show got worse as time went on. I watched SATC2 the other night as it was on Sky, and gaped in horrified fascination at the vulgar spectacle of a doddery, over-medicated Liza Minelli performing Beyonce at a black-and-white-ball style gay wedding complete with swans and ice sculptures. It was all oohing and aahing at first class suites on top airlines, servants, conspicous consumption, money money money. It was like being stabbed in the eyes with a stick of grossly expensive bad taste. Ugh.

I am glad to say i have never watched it. Not once. Yet mates say to me that they cant beleive i never watched it as its right up my street and how much i would like Carrie cos she is also right up my street. having read this thread im worried, what were they trying to tell me!!!!!!!

Love it too. Don't overthink it. Just enjoy the NYC shots, great clothes and genuinely funny bits.

The films on the other hand....

I hate Carrie but I love the show! I can watch endless repeats, I just spend the whole time cringing at Carrie.
She's so self-obsessed it's unreal- not just with men but with her friends as well. I noticed that if you watch any episode of the show involving Carrie and any other character she always brings the conversation back to her even when her friends are going through life changing events.

I really liked the first few seasons. When it started out it wasn't about clothes. It was about relationships and friendships and living in a big city. I get fed up with people who've never seen it, generally men, whining that it's silly women going on about shoes.

I went off the later shows and the last series really annoyed me because instead of the characters staying funny and independent they made them sad and needy.

I loved the clothes too... And the first few series were good.

SATC is probably the worst and most cringe-making film ever made. Even worse than Mamma Mia.

You're right with 'as if that was the point' - if I'm reading you right.

I had a male colleague, who I otherwise liked, who hated Emma Thompson. His grounds being that he didn't fancy her and that she didn't do anything to change his POV.

I did consider debating whether the main point of actresses was to be wank fodder or whether they might aspire to a higher purpose, like being able to act, but ruled it out because it would have been too fucking depressing by half.

It captured a time re the designer clothes, bags and shoes. Most people who watched it looked at the expensive clothes and lifestyle as escapism. I liked Samantha the best as she was an unashamed slag.

What I mean about men not fancying Carrie is that the show goes on about how wonderful she's supposed to be.
All her friends keep telling her (and us) how clever and sexy and fabulous she is and yet at no point does it come across in the series (apart- occasionally from the first couple of seasons when she's not with Big).

As a woman I could understand if every guy I knew fancied her and it was me 'not getting it'. But the fact is men don't like her and women don't either which defies the point of the series.

Ah, I quite like Carrie's character anyway. The first couple of series I could have screamed at her for being just...ARRRGHHH, and then I warmed to her.

I like SJP as well after watching her Who Do You Think You Are thingies. She seemed nice.
