I actually feel quite sorry for Cersei. She had a crappy marriage and didn't really want Ned killed. And if Jaime was my brother I'd have trouble controlling myself (he is SO GORGEOUS!).

Can someone explain something about the wall to me? So the brothers are not supposed to have families - so why is Jorah's dad in charge up there? Is Jorah illegitimate?

TrilllianAstra · 25/06/2011 10:22

The Old Bear (as they call him) basically went into retirement on the Wall. He married, had children, his children grew up, his wife (probably) died, and he chose to go to the wall to let his son be Lord of Bear Island.

(some of the old Northern families still look at the Wall as an honorable place to be, rather than a punishment, see Benjen Stark for example)

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 28/06/2011 02:29

Ah, ok! I should have figured you can retire up there since Cersei wanted to send Ned there!

CheerfulYank · 28/06/2011 02:37

Cersei is a heinous bitch. Fact! :)

TrilllianAstra · 28/06/2011 09:08

Ah, but there are reasons why...

Wait and see how she reacts when her father realises that she's still young enough to bear children and therefore a valuable commodity to be used to seal an alliance.

(she was about 17 when she married Robert, Joffrey is 13 now, probably not much gap at the beginning so she's no older than mid 30s)

OracleInaCoracle · 28/06/2011 09:12

I actually feel a little sorry for cersei too, as trillian says, she is just a commodity to her father. in the sequel to pillars of the earth, one of the female characters is forced to marry the villain after her dh dies. for highborn women there is no choice and you almost have to be a bitch to retain some dignity.

TrilllianAstra · 28/06/2011 09:15

I don't think she has to be quite as much of a scheming bitch as she is, but she certainly feels that it is the only way to have some control over her life.

I could talk about how well that works for her but that would be spoilers.. Wink

OracleInaCoracle · 28/06/2011 09:18

I do like the fact that she outmaneuveres the men, you could always pm trills, I wouldnt minnd... Wink

I watched the first 4 in one sitting but I've not seen the rest being stuck in stupid hospital for a month. A friend has put the rest onto OH's laptop so he's going to bring them in for me. Can't wait for my marathon catch up session!

LetUsPrey · 28/06/2011 11:13

I'm still catching up too. Got four episodes left. I think Viserys just got his crown of gold at the end of the last episode I've watched - serves him right too. Pillock.

I am loving Drogo! A body like that, a very intense stare and he doesn't talk much - what's not to love?

I may have accidentally checked imdb.com - he's the new Conan the Barbarian. I shall allow myself a phwoar!

Anyway back on topic - kind of glad that I'm prepared for Ned's death.

Love Daenarys (?sp) and Arya too.

CheerfulYank · 28/06/2011 15:18

I feel sorry for Jamie. Cersei...not so much. Or Joffrey for that matter. I was watching an online review of GOT the other day and they were talking about different characters. When they got to Joffrey they said: "Joffrey...well, Joffrey's just a dick." And moved on. :o

TrilllianAstra · 28/06/2011 15:20

Joffrey is a monster. I think Cersei sees a little that she has made him king and now she can't control him and that it might not be working out how she intended.

Jaime. Well... this is the no spoilers thread. Wink

Bearcrumble · 28/06/2011 19:26

I am missing the show so much - can't wait until next Spring. I am reading the first book now, I hope I have enough self control to stop reading at the place this series finished.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/06/2011 19:36

I've not seen the tv program. Have read the first book and loved it, currently reading the second. Can't wait for the DVD.

TrilllianAstra · 28/06/2011 19:39

Why would you do that?

It's better (IMO) to read books first and see TV/films after than the other way around.

LetUsPrey · 28/06/2011 19:44

I usually read the book first. Bit late for that in this instance for this first batch though. I'll see what my library's got.

Bearcrumble · 28/06/2011 20:13

Normally I'd agree but I enjoyed the first series so much (watching without knowing what was coming next) that I want to keep it like that. I mean I didn't come at it with a fan's perspective so I had no preconceptions and I want to keep it that way with future episodes - I like to sit on the edge of my seat and NOT know who's going to die in five mins time.

LetUsPrey · 28/06/2011 20:21

I see what you mean BearCrumble.

Oh feck I'm turning into that bloke off the Fast Show who agrees with what everyone else is saying when they're arguing!

VivaLeBeaver · 28/06/2011 21:09

I do worry that the TV show won't be as good as the books. But I prefer reading the books first as then I can imagine the scenery, castles, etc as how I think they should look. Not as how some director thinks they should.

TrillianAuror · 08/07/2011 15:04

April is such a long time away...

akaemmafrost · 17/08/2011 22:30

Just bumping this as my sister is watching the series back to back on Sky plus at my recommendation.

She is watching the last episode tonight. Phoned this morning absolutely distraught about Eddard, I commiserated and then she said "as long as nothing happens to Khal Drogo, I will be able to deal with it". Weeeeeelllllll..............

I am expecting a tearful phone call any second now!

Damn you George R R Martin.

limitedperiodonly · 18/08/2011 16:35

Your poor sister.

What did she think of the baby dragons?

I thought they were cute. DH had been enjoying the series up till then but insisted that he would boycott further series because the baby dragons ruined it for him as: 'dragons aren't cute.'

We had a short debate on the nature of mythical creatures and whether they can be cute or fierce or whatever you want them to be because they aren't real but the upshot was that I'll be watching series 2 alone. No problem.

My view is that babies of any species are cute. I bet Dennis Neilson and Michael Winner were bonny.
