Apparently the original Swedish series, Series 2. I haven't seen any of these before but I am v excited to be filling that little Scandinavian hole left by The Killing.

Anyone else fancy watching?

I can't watch the second series again, no Stefan and no Linda.

I'm 5 hours into the boxed set of the Killing and now know whodunnit .....

nulgirl · 23/05/2011 15:30

Read in the paper that the killing won a bafta last night. Was anyone watching? Who collected the award? Would love to have seen Sarah or troels on the red carpet.

Watched Wallander on Saturday. Almost cried when kurt was asked about the picture of his daughter. You could see the sadness on his face. Apparently the cast were all devastated by the death of the actress who played Linda. Am glad that they didn't re-cast her. It would have seemed really disloyal.

pawsnclaws · 23/05/2011 18:30

I agree, I find it very sad to see how depressed the character of Linda was in the films considering what happened in real life.

I didn't very much warm to Pontus and Isabelle in the second series, in every single episode I can remember the two of them seemed to go crashing in with no back-up at every opportunity (yes, I know it's fiction ....).

SeaShellsHasSandInHerShoes · 23/05/2011 20:07

What happened to Linda? I heard an actress died but I thought it was Ann-Britt. totally missed that.

pawsnclaws · 23/05/2011 20:12

The actress who played her committed suicide - I think she had battled depression but the tipping point was being involved in the tsunami in 2004 when she was in Asia. She left a young daughter.

I think the Mankell books stopped after her death too - very sad.

SeaShellsHasSandInHerShoes · 23/05/2011 21:31

:( truly sad.

PacificDogwood · 23/05/2011 21:32

Well, I am now totally confused and am beginning to think that I maybe only watched series 2 (but not the first episode Confused?) as I have no idea who Linda is.... Blush. V sad about the actress who played her committing suicide.

Have I missed the entirely to series 1?? It would seem so.

Either way, if I have to wait til later in the summer for The Killing II, I will happily watch Kurt again in the meantime.

SeaShellsHasSandInHerShoes · 23/05/2011 21:39

Linda is wallender's daughter. In the books she twice tried to commit suicide as a teen, but as far as I've now read she has just joined the police force. The Swedish tv series are specially rlwitten in addition to the books so I guess they had to write her out :(

muminlondon · 23/05/2011 23:24

nulgirl Sofie Grabol (Sarah Lund) and one of the producers went up to collect the award - they looked really excited. I just saw a glimpse at the end of the Baftas then googled the website to see who they were up against. I was hoping to see the actor who played Meyer - I still miss him!

He reminded me a bit of poor old Svartmann who tries fails miserably to get a work/life balance in Wallander 2. And keeps getting his car blown up.

kennypowers · 24/05/2011 08:21

So is the absence of Stefan and Linda explained somehow in Series 1 of Wallander? I watched most but not all of them, I think the last one I saw she was pregnant and uncertain about how to proceed.

Very sad that the actress took her own life.

teej · 24/05/2011 10:20

hi mumin, tootired, pacific and everyone else from the killing threads

i was out on saturday but am looking forward to rewatching this series of wallander - really enjoyed it first time round!

seashells i loved that documentary when it was first shown - but remember that i had to close the laptop otherwise my amazon basket would have been groaning under the sheer weight of scandi crime orders Blush

kenny someone else might have a better recollection of it, but as far as I remember nothing specific was said re: what happened to Linda... it's clear Kurt has had a loss and she's not around but i think it's left open as to whether that meant death or just that she moved away perhaps to be closer to her mother.... still terribly sad for everyone in RL, particularly her poor daughter Sad

and hurrah for the killing team winning the BAFTA - thoroughly well deserved!

TwoIfBySea · 26/05/2011 00:21

I think it was left more that Linda had moved away after what happened to Stefan. From what I could gather in the following series. There was a documentary about it that interviewed the Wallander actor - so sad to hear him speak of how he saw his relationship with the actress as similar to the characters they played.

So...in the wait for The Killing 2nd series to start (and I don't know if I'll watch it as I thought it a shame Meyer was killed) is anyone else watching Spiral: Butcher of La Villette?

TooTiredToArgue · 26/05/2011 09:28

Hello all

Twoif I watched Spiral (butcher of La villette). Really enjoyed it though found it quite hard watching at times. Very different to The Killing (still my absolute fave), but good in its own gritty, gallic way.

Mumin I'm dying to ask. What did Sofie wear to pick up the award? Did the jumper make an outing? Prob a bit warm for a black tie event......

Please - no more spoilers on The Killing. I read this thread on the basis that it would be about Wallander and now know who the killer is in The Killing with 12 episodes of the boxed set to go.

muminlondon · 27/05/2011 17:29

TooTired there is a clip on

She's much more glamourous here and no jumper!

I also read here that someone left the Bafta in the back of a taxi Blush

No spoilers in these clips by the way, pawsnclaws and sorry if anything you read here has spoiled your enjoyment of the boxed set.

TooTiredToArgue · 27/05/2011 18:20

Thanks mumin. How glamorous she looks!

Oh, i do miss it. Roll on September (or whenever).

Sorry, Pawsnclaws.

V glad it's back, but not loving Krister Henriksson's dye job (miaow, sorry!)

IslaValargeone · 28/05/2011 16:55

I was a first time Wallander watcher last week, but I'm afraid I turned off after about 45 minutes. It just wasn't happening for me at all. Should I give it another go? I was bored senseless.

nometime · 28/05/2011 17:06

Love the Swedish Wallander and I think it is so much better than the Kenneth B version. The Wallander in this series is the best in my opinion. Some of the episodes are quite dark and make the British version look very light.

clangermum · 29/05/2011 20:19

We thought he'd died his hair too

What happened to Stefan in series 1? I can't remember how it ended, other than that they split up.

It was really confusing watching blonde Wallander a while back. I think someone said these were films made from the books, and shown at the cinema originally, then dark haired Wallander episodes were made for telly and not the same stories as the books but based on the character.

Wish I'd seen that Iceland doc.

Have replaced the void left by The Killing with box set of Spiral Series 1. Seems very dark. Speech and pace a lot faster too, so not getting the sense of lingering over scenes I had with The Killing. Will stick with it though. Another interesting female character at least.

The 2nd Wallander series is very different, but stick with it.

Stefan, I'm afraid, killed himself at the end of series 1.

Jar City (the Icelandic film) was bloody brilliant.

Hopefully they'll be making Jo Nesbo's books into films soon Grin

Highlander · 30/05/2011 13:11

love those Killing t-shirts Smile

TooTiredToArgue · 30/05/2011 13:24

Have to admit, I'm not immediately addicted to Wallander, but I'll persevere. Found it hard watching Saturday's episode about the child.....
