"it's a great series, about a serial killer, who only murders murderers.."

I have recently got seriously into the TV series Dexter! A friend of mine kept telling me how brilliant it is, but I didn't think a TV series about a serial killer would really be my thing. But turns out, it is Shock

Problem is, now I want to recommend it to other friends but I have been unable to do so without making it sound horrible - along the lines of, "it's a series about a serial killer who also works as a blood spatter analyst for the miami metro... he only kills people because he saw his mother get killed as a child... his adopted dad was in miami metro too and taught him a "code" so he doesn't get caught, and he only kills murderers..." and so it goes on, I can never adequately describe it Blush

Any of you watch Dexter? Ever successfully explained it to someone without sounding crazy? I am half way through season 4 now so please try not to give anything away...

I tell people it's about a serial killer who only kills people he thinks deserve it, because they've done terrible things themsleves & got away with whatever they did. He's the ultimate vigilante.
No spoilers, but Season 4 is really good.

deemented · 18/04/2011 13:42

I really wanted to get into Dexter, but i've never had the time.

Would i have to watch from season 1 to 'get' it?

iklboo · 18/04/2011 13:43

Yes dee, you probably would. There's lots of talk about previous incidents through the seasons, without much flashback. It's worth the effort though.

deemented · 18/04/2011 13:45

Hmm...

Do you know if they are being rerun anywhere, or would manshapei have to buy the boxset?

iklboo · 18/04/2011 13:50

Not sure, but Amazon have Season 1-3 here

naturalbaby · 18/04/2011 13:51

i love love love dexter! i even considered calling ds2 dexter but not sure how he'd feel being named after a serial killer off the t.v! have watched the whole lot from beginning to end. think there are 4 series? or even 5?! it gets better as you go along, really worth starting from the very beginning.

iklboo · 18/04/2011 13:57

Think there's a Season 6 ready to air in the States. We've not had Season 5 yet, though. FX says it'll be aired on Fridays at 10pm from June 11

iklboo · 18/04/2011 13:58

Sorry, June 17

juneau · 18/04/2011 14:00

I love Dexter! I got into it while we were living in the US and now DH has to download it off the internet for me as I'm not prepared to wait over a year for FX to show it. Season 5 finished in the US in December and a sixth season has been commissioned. Yay! I have a bit of a crush on Michael C. Hall.

bullet234 · 18/04/2011 14:04

I really enjoyed watching Dexter, until the end of the 4th series. Now I don't think I want to watch anymore.

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2011 14:47

I've given up trying to convert people. Too many conversations that go: 'Eww! It's about a serial killer. I could never watch that.' 'Meaning: I am lovely whereas you are sick.'

If you insist on going ahead don't mention his mum. Isn't that a spoiler? Can't remember now.

If I was a serial killer I'd concentrate on people who spoil my favourite shows. You're safe, I've seen season 1 Grin.

I've fantasised about slowly torturing to death the person on a news site about Michael C Hall who revealed the twist in season 4 just as it was about to start.

ilythia · 18/04/2011 14:52

I love dexter. But I don't ever recommend it Grin

LittlePickleHead · 18/04/2011 15:02

I love Dexter!

I understand why you might feel that way at the end of season 4 bullet but from what I've heard, season 5 sounds really good with a very good twist to it...

Am I right juneau? (without giving anything away!)

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2011 15:06

I might also serially kill people who confuse thrillers with torture porn.

Like the colleague who, when The Talented Mr Ripley came out, said she couldn't understand why people wanted to watch sick films about serial killers. Confused

mozette · 18/04/2011 20:29

I urge everyone to watch Season 5 - it is absolutely fab and a return to form of Seasons 1 & 2.

SecretNutellaFix · 18/04/2011 20:37

Dexter is amazing.

Wolfgirl · 19/04/2011 10:24

ep... Dexter fan, here too! Shock

takewhatyoucan · 19/04/2011 13:19

yaaay other dexter fans!!

I have 1 more to watch of s4, i have an email alert set up for when s5 box set is available for pre-order!

LittlePickleHead · 19/04/2011 15:11

ooooh take you have a treat in store for you tonight! Didn't stop me from wanting to watch more - just the opposite - I NEED to know what he's going to do next!

purpleknittingmum · 19/04/2011 15:13

I use to watch it but it is now on a channel we don't have :(

Vintagepommery · 19/04/2011 18:38

I just say to friends - it's about a serial killer and he'd kind of the good guy but it's good honest.

They love it once they get over the fear of watching it.

lazarusb · 19/04/2011 18:49

naturalbaby we named ds2 Leon after the contract killer in the film of the same name. So far he hasn't displayed any murderous tendencies! Grin

It's really good also very funny in parts and makes me want to visit Miami.

LittlePickleHead · 20/04/2011 10:56

I think the actress who plays Deborah is brilliant as well, her character is definitely my favourite. Though a bit :( that her and Michael C Hall are getting a divorce (despite me having a HUGE crush on him)
