Did anybody watch it and was it any good?

Yes. Moffat (Peter or is it Stephen?). A former barrister himself I believe.

It's exactly the same. Two hot shot barristers going for silk. Each have a pupil, probably only one will be kept on. Chambers in financial trouble. Chief clerk doing all he can to bring in money.

spongefingerssavedmylife · 23/02/2011 08:35

I only watched it because of R P-J and he was hardly in it. We thought it was all pretty daft and unconvincing. Sterotypical scenes and people doing unlikely things - wig stealing - wtf? And doing cocaine and having a shouting match just above lots of people but no one noticed.

Her (what was her name) hair and lipstick was distractingly horrid. Pupil had presumably been to uni etc yet seemed to know nothing about law or that you ought not to wear suit collars sticking up (although in one scene they alternated between up and down).

LOL at coming home and not putting the lights on - who does that, or falling asleep on a pile of books.

I completely failed to understand the one aligator, two aligator link with the line up pictures and the old man (who was star of the show).

Will give it one more go, in hope of more R PJ next wee!

JeffVadar · 23/02/2011 10:36

It was like déjà vu all over again! North Square was loads better IMO.

BluePyjamas · 23/02/2011 11:33

I didn't get the alligator link either? Liked it though. Wig stealing to show us he's a bad 'un.

Debs3013 · 23/02/2011 11:59

I quite enjoyed it and will probably watch next weeks one.

But I do get annoyed with the constant 'all police are crooked' bit. It seems to be in every damned programme and I think the problem is that jury's then believe this and it effects real life.

But just my opinion and possibly a controversial one Smile

Jacaqueen · 23/02/2011 12:33

The point of the 'alligator' counting was to prove that the victim had been shown a photo of the accused for 2 seconds more than the photos of the other 3 suspects.

so

1 alligator equals one second and the photo changes

2 alligator equals another second and the photo changes

3 alligator another second and the photo changes to the accused. 4 alligator still the accused. 5 alligator still the accused. 6 alligator and still the photo of the accused.

The police had delibrately shown the victim an image of the accused for 3 seconds so he was more familiar and was therefore picked out in the line up.

That probably doesn't make it any clearer.

FlamingOBingo · 23/02/2011 12:36

Her lipstick was shit - bleeding onto her skin. She looked like she'd been snogging someone!

I liked the show though.

bamboostalks · 23/02/2011 12:41

I loved North Sq too. This was predictable but quite enjoyable, you could mn at the same time, no probs. Not sure how her pupil could be 21 though? Sure he would have to be a little older at least. he looked 18.

sparkle1977 · 23/02/2011 13:59

I loved it personally. I will agree tho that the stealing wig scene was a bit ludicrous.

I am interested to hear lots of you mentioning "North Square", never heard of it, when was it on and what channel ??

Punkatheart · 23/02/2011 16:38

Yes, the trainee stealing the wig was utterly ridiculous. Barristers are in the public eye and eventually the man selling him the wig will spot him. He risks his career. It just wouldn't happen.

Not sure about this one - few too many cliches and a clumsy link with the cocaine addiction of a barrister with the drug smuggling. Needs tighter writing...

Did I miss something or was the trainee mopping up tea with her wig? I may have lost attention at that point - so not exactly sure what happened...

barbieisaskinnybitch · 23/02/2011 19:16

It's North Square part deux.

Lol at not getting alligator thingy :)

Pancakeflipper · 23/02/2011 19:23

Never saw or heard of North Square but popped out of my cave last night and watched it cos I like Maxine Peak.
It was watchable. I could spend ages pulling it apart but it's got my interest and I wanna suss out the relationships between the main players.

sharbie · 23/02/2011 19:35

dying/ageing the new wig maybe punk Wink

Punkatheart · 23/02/2011 20:01

...thanks sharpie......it did seem odd but that makes sense. Actually coffee is better for that!

GothAnneGeddes · 24/02/2011 03:53

I thought it was like North Square, but not as good. Especially as it had that BBC drama thing of spelling everything out very ad nauseum.

Also, the gloomy flat. Surely most people switch on the nearest light switch rather then fumbling about in the gloom.

Ashbury · 24/02/2011 14:11

I quite liked it(except for the wig stealing scene), just thought it was easy to watch. I also like Maxine Peake so I wanted to give it a go. Yes, the young trainee/pupil was trying to dye/age the wig with tea as the Maxine Peake character had commented that he should have bought second-hand as a new wig made him stand out as a rookie (I expect they'll have a fling!).

sharbie · 24/02/2011 17:34

she has done v well maxine - since dinnerladies

NoseyNooNoo · 24/02/2011 17:54

R P-J broke his leg in real life so they had to write in the fight that leads to him having a broken leg.

I met him once when I was trying in vain to chat up Jack Davenport. R P-J was very plesed with himself, and seemed to think I should too. I had no idea who he was...

barbieisaskinnybitch · 24/02/2011 18:28

Is he married to Dervla Kirwan?

sharbie · 24/02/2011 19:11

yes

kreecherlivesupstairs · 28/02/2011 08:46

Lone disenter then, I really enjoyed it apart from the wig pinching.
Did I mishear or is Maxine with child? She certainly looked a bit tubby.

mumdebump · 28/02/2011 09:52

Thought it was good at showing the moral bankruptcy of those in the legal profession. Maxine Peake character in particular was especially vile - claiming moral highground but willing to twist the situation in court to get a guilty party acquitted. Will be interesting to she if she turns in the medal.

HalleLouja · 01/03/2011 22:10

Maxine is good though. Rpj is nothing in comparison though I loved him as Adam in Spooks.

fruitstick · 01/03/2011 22:17

I'm in love with Maxine Peake - but the lipstick and the black unglasses do nothing for her.

Entertaining twaddle though - I feel less embarrassed about it than judge john deed.
